DOOM fan tries to recreate a 100K Revenants map, runs immediately into SnapMap limitations

It appears that while DOOM’s SnapMap is kind of cool, it’s not as powerful or as friendly to modders, and comes with a lot of limitations. As we can see below, YouTube’s ‘MarphitimusBlackimus’ has tried to recreate a map with 100K Revenants, and ran immediately into SnapMap’s limitations. MarphitimusBlackimus was unable to create such a map, [...]

I have to say this has been pretty disappointing. The single player is fantastic, the multiplayer is average at best. I was hoping that the map editing and player base would provide new and fun and fresh gameplay for a long time coming. Sadly I am all around not happy with Snapmap at all. Map limitations, spawn limitations, even the fact that your key binds reset EVERY SINGLE map you download to play. It's simply all around annoying. I was hoping for those epic Skyrim/Fallout mods where you have huge numbers of enemies and spawns and 10,000,000 cubes of cheese falling from the sky and whatnot. I guess not.

at least on pc they should allow it.

Kleptic2916d ago

Yep, that is the biggest frustration with it in my opinion...every single snapmap limitation is obviously based on console network limitations (limits set in place by Sony and MS with PSN/XBL)...there is zero reason for any of that on the PC version...but there are most likely those annoying 'behind closed door' parity clauses between all versions.

I really hope Bethesda takes as much risk with it as they did with the single player (which was very risky, and id pulled it off better than pretty much anyone expected)...Snapmap needs a 'PC only' filter and option for map creation, in which all those restrictions gets dropped...Then dropping all the enemy spawn limits, map size, etc. that is the number 1 requirement for it to get going...

after that, more backdrop options. Not just the same interior modules rotated around...it needs assets from other single player locations, and more open outdoor type sections imo.

Totally in their hands...the potential is definitely there...its now a matter of adapting to community requests and letting it really go wild...or forcing console like practices on a PC audience, and watching the entire thing die pretty quickly...I think the best news is that the game may be a bigger hit than even Bethesda expected, which may give more encouragement to treat it respectfully.

You just gave the complete opposite opinion of that reviewer that gave doom a 4

Damn, only 99,999

Kleptic2916d ago

true...should be something a lot more realistic like...12 at once...that's much more appropriate...?

Duke192916d ago

Not saying it's perfect, and 12 is certainly low - but I also can't fault the game for not being able to run 100000 enemies at once. My ps4 would melt.

For PC, they should probably remove the cap. And PS4 just set it higher unless that really is the actual limit for the hardware

Kleptic2916d ago

yeah. I don't think its a hardware limit (the PS4 handles the single player just fine, which has WAY more stuff going on and is WAY larger than anything in snapmap)...but the rumored network limitations...all that logic and stuff connected to enemies and level size has to be networked through PSN/XBL...Sony and MS hate that, even though you pay for the service.................The thing I forgot to mention higher up was that even single player snapmaps are 'online'.

At the very least there should be an 'offline' option for larger single player snapmaps or something. The fact that the network restrictions on consoles limits single player experiences in there is ridiculous. We know its not the maps themselves, as each level is a simple script of instructions, all assets to build the maps are locally stored.

so you can creat multiplayer maps.. how does it work I don't remember seeing private matches

Tankbusta402916d ago

I haven't tried to make any snap maps, yet but I have been blown away with the game. Loved the single player and really enjoy the multiplayer. Haven't picked up Uncharted 4 since I beat it because of DOOM
