From Cinelinx:
In some surprise news today, Disney is closing it's doors on their gaming development arm, Avalanche Software, and will no longer be supporting/making the Disney Infinity toys-to-life game.
The toys-to-life genre has died out, but the concept of Disney Infinity should live on in another genre since it provides a wild crossover for fans.
There is a huge gap in the market at the moment. There aren’t many (if any) toys-to-life games available for the two consoles yet. A reboot or remake of the game would work so well, especially with Disney’s current roster of characters, films and TV shows.
Did Disney sell the rights to Activision? I never knew they had the rights to Disney Infinity.
They DO have the rights to Skylanders though.
Plus there's a financial reason every publisher gave up on the "toys to life" thing. So I doubt they'll revive any of them.
Is it possible Disney Infinity or other toys to games could return, but I'll be honest I really hope they don't come back.
These kinds of games are just another way for the game studios to nickle and dime you for every cent you have.
Disney Infinity was a fun game I could play with my kid back in the day. I still have it and the 100+ toys and yes, it works on PS5. But my kid is a teenager now and we've both moved on to more serious games.
Take a look at the rise and fall of Toys-To-Life games and see the magic it brought into everyone's home with games like Skylanders.
Wow, that died out awfully quick.
Just when it was getting good!
Wow...the toys to life business wasn't paying the bills anymore? That is very interesting to hear.
I wonder how or if this has any affect on Lego's Dimensions, Amiibo or Skylanders. Are they still making money?
I remember an article that asked if Sony or MS should get into the toy business...maybe they're lucky they didn't.
Taking a $147mil write off and exiting console publishing.. but then Disney is always like this, they've done it before and they'll do it again (just give it a few years). Be interesting to see how and who gets to develop the very numerous Disney IP's.
One simple thing killed any interest in further Disney Infinity games for me, and it was such a bafflingly easy fix that simply never occurred: Let me play with any figure in any playset. I don't care if you have to toss in one of the storyline characters up the front during cutscenes with my figure hanging out in the background, let me play with who I want. I would have invested heavily for all playset releases had I been able to play as, say, Vanellope throughout all said playsets. Instead I bought the original game on sale, learned that I couldn't play with any of my favorite figurines in the two playsets I bought, and never touched the series again.
