Blizzard finally comments on the legacy server petition

J. Allen Brack, executive producer and Vice President for World of Warcraft, has finally given a statement in relation to the petition that recently passed 200,000 signatures.

According to Brack, Blizzard have been discussing the possibility of adding classic servers for years. The lengthy post includes: answers as to why Nostralrius couldn’t continue with their private server; the reason why Blizzard can’t just create a classic server; and the idea of a ‘pristine realm’, a realm where all the new features that World of Warcraft has gained over the years would be turned off.

Finally. It was about time they said something. Blizzard needs to stop acting a fool and just back the nostalrius guys—as in just slapping on a blizzard approved label on them. They've been here for so long, and have a true love for the game. And obviously they were providing a service that blizzard was not, so, in a perfect world, blizzard would have just incorporated the servers into their ecosystem as the first classic server from which all others could bud around from. A wasted opportunity for blizzard, and they hurt a lot of people in the process.

Mithan2922d ago

So they were supposed to get hurt themselves as a result?

It's a legal issue. If they don't protect their IP, they set a precedent that future people can use to screw with them. This is law and the fact you do not understand it, doesn't make it less real.

They did the right thing. It sucks for the other guys, but that is how it is.

This has been going on for years. There have been dozens of Community Driven servers shut down over the last 15 years because of issues like this. Ultima Online, Everquest, even Meridian 59 had these issues. That is how old it is.

Don't bother. These idiots think they have the simple answers. They think there is no reason why they should have shut it down. They think Blizzard creating legacy servers is something they can do without any effort. They think they have some right to play the vanilla version of WoW.

I got to agree with Mithan on this one. It is their IP and users don't have any legal claim over it.

I do hope one day we have something to preserve games that are server based, but this is entirely up to the developer who owns the legal right over it.

Kreisen2922d ago

The idea of a "pristine server" sounds pointless. You either implement Vanilla servers or you dont.

Personally i would like to see a proper TBC server. I always thought the barebones Vanilla experience was pretty horrible. The game only truly started to come into its own around TBC and hit its peak with WOTLK.

Why not do this. Wotlk was the peak. So why not roll the mechanics back to wotlk days. Or even BC. Take away the leveling assistance and the early mounts and the dungeon queues and all that stuff that was implemented to make it easier. Bring back old school talent trees that enabled players to have a certain character in their play style. and the grinding and the pvp tense environment. Make professions useful again and change the crappy daily reliance/ monotony of doing dailies . And if they want just add the story of Cata onwards minus the changes they made. Itll take some work yea. but its for the better.

The only PlayStation dev I care about tbh.

Cacabunga14h ago

Hopefully doesn’t take them a complete gen to release it

Good. Something not boring, not one of those "make your own game" crap and also on Steam would be nice.

I too like to look for things in the wrong places.

"the capital group of PCF Group S.A."

If you're getting funding from a group that needs two different ways of Acronyming itself, things will not go the way you want them to.

If it was more online-only crap then good riddance.

jjb198122h ago

Outriders was crap. They slapped that game together and threw in a loot system to get players' attention. This game was absolutely jank and the always online nonsense made it stutter like crazy. People Can't Optimize.

thorstein21h ago

I liked Outriders but I could see where the artistic vision was compromised. The way the industry is now, it wouldn't surprise me that upper management would scrap something that didn't pull in money via gaas, mts, or other means.

Escape from Tarkov Unheard Edition Reneges on Promised Content Behind $250 Price Tag

The new Escape from Tarkov Unheard Edition has the community in an outrage after promising exclusive access to the new PvE mode for $250 USD.

Christopher1d 11h ago

$250? Do they not know all the other games that already exist or will be made in the future that can do similar?

SimpleDad1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

This is for the hardcore people that have 2500 h in the game. They basically play that one game the whole year.
Oh and those same people are mad as hell at this... what a way to reward fans of your game and annihilate newcomers.

Read a comment earlier calling it a "special monetization operation." I had to chuckle at that.
