It basically looks exactly like the first Mirrors Edge...

Neonridr2946d ago

nothing wrong with that. Mirror's Edge was never about photo realism. So hard to fault that sort of graphic style.

DARK WITNESS2946d ago

nothing wrong with that... except why even bother developing it for the xbox one and ps4 then?

what are they using the "next gen" power to do if it's not doing anything for the graphics?

hardcorehenry2946d ago

"except why even bother developing it for the xbox one and ps4 then? "

err....... money and personal enjoyment spring to mind. why develop any game for any platform?

Lamboomington2946d ago

@Dark Witness

1. It looks much better than the first game. People have forgotten about that game. I just played it recently. Don't know if you realize, but so much of the lighting in ME1 is baked, as opposed to ME catalyst, which has a fully dynamic TOD, indirect lighting and better reflections.

2. 60fps. It renders twice as fast as most of the other games out there. Ofcourse it isn't going to look that good.

vickers5002946d ago

" except why even bother developing it for the xbox one and ps4 then?"

This may be hard to fathom, but some people actually play games for reasons other than graphics. Example: I played and enjoyed Uncharted 3 on ps3, even though it showed no graphical difference from the Uncharted 2.

What a stupid question.

Neonridr2946d ago

@DARK - then explain games like The Witness, or Flower.. why does everything have to be about uber-realistic graphics? Can't games just be visually different but the gameplay still be fun?

Christ.. are you really saying that?

darthv722946d ago

XB1 will be 720p 60fps.
PS4 will be 900p 60fps.
PS4 (Neo mode) 1080p 60fps

TheCommentator2946d ago (Edited 2946d ago )

You beat me to it Darth. Only thing I would mention is that it Is still in beta according to the article, so it's possible that the final build will run at 900p on XB1, while the PS4 version runs at 1080p. I just hope that Battlefront isn't an indicator of a trend EA is starting with resolution.

garrettbobbyferguson2946d ago (Edited 2946d ago )

This. The first mirrors edge on PC still looks better than a majority of games today.

ginsunuva2946d ago (Edited 2946d ago )

@Vickers

Nice stealth trolling but we all know 3 was way better looking than 2. You just forgot since you didn't play them back to back. Or you never played them at all.

MagicBeanz2945d ago

Ugly isn't a graphic style.

Sunny_D2945d ago

@vickers

Except you compared 2 games that were released on the SAME console. LMAO, why bother trolling if you'e going to fail at it?

game4funz2945d ago

@dark witness

Who told you pixel count equals good graphics?
Most Nintendo games are 1080p go play those if you love them pixels.

It's running at 60fps which is better then last gen for sure. And the graphics do look better.

This means it is going to look like crap on PS4 as well. Time to boot up the Potatoe Masher!

Kribwalker2946d ago

When dice do betas tho they typically don't include good textures ect, I remember playing the BF3 and BFHARDLINE betas and seeing that

Lamboomington2946d ago

no, it does not.

Those screenshots look eons ahead of the first game. Maybe you should play it again to remind yourself of how old it is. It can look nice at times, but it's painfully obvious that it's all static/baked. There's sooo much more going on in ME Catalyst, and it runs at 60fps. Ofcourse it isn't going to look THAT good on console.

Yeah it does.

I keep hearing people want better frame rate over resolution.. Here you go.

It's going to be hard to judge a game like ME on graphics. The stark contrast of colours would look good on even lower resolutions than that, where it will show is particularly in areas that have NPC's and enemies. But, It's a Xbone we're talking about and it was always going to be a limitation for games as even a small amount of time went by

candystop2946d ago

There are limitations on both consoles and will always be.

Ark_2946d ago (Edited 2946d ago )

It boggles my mind how anyone can disagree with such an inherently true statement.

odderz2946d ago

720p? Hopefully they will optimise before release but I'm feeling doubtful...

Lamboomington2946d ago

It's 60 fps. 60fps with an open world, dynamic TOD with global illumination, screenspace reflections etc. It's not too far from what you'd generally expect.

NarooN2946d ago

Love how people just disagree with blatantly true facts. This site's userbase, just wow...

OoglyBoogly2946d ago

It's also 2016 and we're still getting games in 720p...

AllRoundGamer362946d ago (Edited 2946d ago )

whats your point? as long as the game plays well i for one could care less what rez its rendered at, hell i still play games on the original xbox and xbox 360 arcade games like doom, doom 2, wofenstein 3d and original nes and snes games on wii virtual console. a true gamer cares less about resolution and more about actual game play.

also this is a beta ie early build and not final quality.

Ravenor2946d ago

And in 2005 I had a 1600*1200 4:3 monitor, what's your point? Does the 720p suddenly make the game look like a PS1 title?

SavingPvt_Highon2945d ago

I agree with you. It's 2016, 720p is unacceptable in my opinion. Modern Warfare 2, Midnight Club and several other games relesed last generation were native 1080p on PS3. I don't get it?

MartinB1052945d ago

Framerate is more important than resolution.

DragonbornZ2945d ago

It's an open world game. On console. At 60 fps.

That's pretty damn awesome. Has there been any other big AAA open world game that has went with 60?

I mean, it's is pretty sweet. I read the title and saw "720" and was like "well damn... :|" then saw 60fps and was like "well hot damn! :D"

Like, am I crazy? People are all upset about the res, and I'm just happy it's running at 60.

slavish02946d ago

So is gears4 and doom AND THEY ARE 1080p both systems. I think it says something about the engine now

Looking back to the failed parkour of 2016's Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Kaan writes: "Mirror's Edge will likely never get a third try. The second game does not look like a cheap effort. By all accounts it is beautiful, especially with its FPS Boost enhancements. The city glows at nights and shines in the day. Lights will reflect off of Catalyst’s many structures made of glass. It’s spectacular to run through. But such a lavish production often comes with risk aversion and sadly Catalyst crumbles under this pressure. It’s held back by the pressure to conform, rather than trying to be genuinely different."

The parkour was great. It was just the story and characters didn't get interesting until the final moments and then it was to late.

FPS Boost at 120fps: Battlefield 1/4/5 - Titanfall 1/2 - Mirror's Edge Catalyst Tested

Digital Foundry: Microsoft's FPS Boost support expands again, this time with 120Hz upgrades for 12 games and a 60fps boost for one! We decided to check out the improvement to some of our favourite games in the line-up, including the three Battlefield games that are supported, Titanfall and Mirror's Edge Catalyst. Which consoles support which games, what's the performance really like and are there resolution compromises?

FPS boost is a nice feature. Cant wait for more games to get that.

Eonjay1115d ago

While FPS boost is nice, I feel like it is the bare minimum in upgrades and only helps those with 120 capable TVs. Most of these games are PC titles as well. These games should be patched to run high/ultra PC video setting.

ActualWhiteMan1116d ago

Microsoft is killing it. Meanwhile Sony only lets developers upgrade older games if they make a PS5 version. Which means, less games getting upgrades on Sony’s offering.

jukins1115d ago

Alternatively seems to be a focus on releasing newer games? People barely played the games before 120 fpsnisnt gong to change that. Not to mention the people with the capable tv.

dcbronco1115d ago Show
nickanasty2061115d ago (Edited 1115d ago )

Soon this will not be the case though, and all of these other added perks like 120fps on older games will just be other great additions and features that PS users do not have available to them. I think any additional updates to features for games is something that shouldn't be discredited. Once Microsoft starts rolling out the new games on a regular basis, this argument is not going to age well. For now, you are correct on the new game front, but that is all going to change here soon enough. Sure most argue the "Wait until E3" remark over and over, but that will certainly be a thing of the past with everything Microsoft is working on now. Good things come to those who wait is the way I look at it for now.

Christopher1115d ago

***Once Microsoft starts rolling out the new games on a regular basis, this argument is not going to age well.***

This argument hasn't aged well for a long time now.

foker1115d ago

They are really killing it,.. They haven't released a new first party game in 600 days if not more

SpineSaw1115d ago

Now wait that's not true. 600 days is looong time and they did release a few First Party games that no one played or no one can remember by name but you do make a good point and it don't really matter if its been 6 days or 6yrs for Xbox First Party what they've released has been poor at best.

Army_of_Darkness1115d ago (Edited 1115d ago )

@actualwhiteman

Killing it? Ms? Lmfao! Boosting fps on old last gen games on a new gen console while not releasing a single first party next gen game is killing it to you?! 🤣😂
Meanwhile.... Sony what? Oh has been focusing on releasing actual new first party games. Funny, you forgot to mention that part bud.

Christopher1115d ago

***Meanwhile Sony only lets developers upgrade older games if they make a PS5 version.***

Well, this is just factually incorrect. The Division 2 got an upgrade for PS5 but is running the PS4 version. Other games have had similar.

Man, that makes me want to reinstall the OG Titanfall... seeing people still playing it. Memories

Destiny10801115d ago

battlefield 4, 720p 120fps, campaign locked, multiplayer drops down to 98fps
battlefield 1, 792p 120fps, campaign locked, multiplayer locked
battlefield 5, 1080p 120fps, campaign locked, multiplayer locked
mirror's edge catalyst, 936p 120fps, campaign locked
titanfall 2, 810p 120fps, campaign locked, multiplayer locked, series s not so good
titanfall 1, 792p 120fps, campaign locked, multiplayer locked, no s support for this game

its better then nothing, if they were upped to 4k i would have been impressed, titanfall 1 looks so much better on Pc

darthv721115d ago

It is called "fps boost"... not "res boost"

Destiny10801115d ago (Edited 1115d ago )

titanfall 2, is 4k on the xbox one x, why not "fps boost"
Battlefield 1, is 4k on the xbox one x, why not "fps boost"

DJStotty1115d ago

"titanfall 2, is 4k on the xbox one x, why not "fps boost""

Erm, no

"In general, the One X plays out between 1440p and 1800p with rises to 4k (2160p) in quiet scenes with little activity."

On topic, this is a FPS boost, not a resolution patch so you did not need to add the resolutions for base vanilla xbox. BC normally uses the xbox one version, as opposed to the xbox one X "patched" version to answer your question about resolution.

Either way, all games will use the built in upscaler on either your TV, or the xbox series X to display an upscaled 4K image (not native).

That along with Auto-HDR should result in a good enough reason to replay these games at the new improved framerate.
