A rally against gaming's visually-dull future

"We have the choice to be dropped into any environment we like, to engage in a vicarious experience outside the realm of our realities. Why anyone would prefer to place themselves into a barren sepia-toned wasteland is beyond me, and the idea that people might pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for the privilege is downright bewildering."

Games have different art styles and it's fine like that. End of story!

Godmars2902948d ago

My issue is similar gameplay. That a majority of titles is a para-military running around an environment shooting things.

Shinuz2946d ago

Don't play them then, plenty of games not involving what you mentioned.

Godmars2902946d ago

@Shinuz:
But its the majority of major titles being made today. Doom, The Last of Us, Bioshock and even something like Infamous, God of War, FF13 or Alan Wake. Nearly everything either boils down to a walking simulator, a shooter, or a mix of the two because modern game design dictates that players have experience the main characters perspective so directly that control of that character is taken away from them.

"Dark Souls 3 is predominantly gray and black"

Did this guy never make it into anything but the starting area? The game has tons of color, especially once you reach Irithyll and onwards.

Maxor2948d ago

For every area with color in DS there's 3 other areas with gray and black. There's nothing wrong with that mind you. Dark Souls is supposed to be depressing.

MagicBeanz2948d ago

Sounds like a pointless and unnecessary rally, maybe find a better cause.

EDKICK2948d ago (Edited 2948d ago )

"...almost everything to be seen in the game seems covered with a dusting of filth, which might be understandable if no one in the future has the sense to clean anything ever" hahahahahahahahahahahahah, seriously? No, no one has gone out and started dusting half the state of Massachusetts while avoiding bullets and deathclaws. Do you have any understanding of post-apocalypse?

K-Tuck2947d ago

Is your opposing argument solely rooted in one extreme and overbroad example? Clearly I didn't mean going out and running a Swiffer sweeper over the ruins of the Commonwealth. But many objects, even through regular use, would be cleaner through that use than the textures provided in Fallout 4.

I know we're dealing with a lot of theoretical situations here, but do you really think it's reasonable that no one in a post-apocalyptic future would ever stop to clean something? Not their food, not their cookware, not their clothes or their homes? Not even their guns, which are apparently so important for defending oneself against incoming bullets and Deathclaw attacks?

I know that such a criticism is highly interpretative, but if I lived in a desolate wasteland and only had a few possessions to my name, I'd probably keep those possessions clean. That's especially true if their function -- and hence my safety -- depended upon cleanliness. Considering the context of my argument, I don't think the occasional clean object in an otherwise filthy world is as abnormal or unnecessary as you seem to think.

I do understand that you're entitled to think a post-apocalyptic future would be totally filthy, and barren, and dead, and that no one would ever stop to wipe anything down. That's your prerogative and I'll respect it. But in my mind, a realistic outlook on the world -- and the cleanliness therein -- comes down to a proper look at the human element in the game. Not only does a totally filthy world not make much sense, it makes for a visually dull world to explore, which was the whole point of the piece.

EDKICK2944d ago

In the context you explained it within in your comment it makes more sense I don't fully agree with the point but I now understand. Thanks for the in depth reply to my shallow (admittedly pointless comment I would probably insult others for making). I loved the art style and world and thought it was far more colorful and vibrant than previous Fallout games. I feel Bethesda made a parallel between the run down nature of the common wealth and utter spotlessness of The Institute (and to a lesser extent The Brotherhood) who's goal is to cleanse the Commonwealth by any means necessary.

GrimDragon2948d ago

Every game this guy mentioned has a perfectly good reason for the colors chosen that fit that world and its story. Plenty of color in all these games. Truly bizarre rant about something so trivial and mostly no sense at all.

So this is what trolls do when not trolling I guess. Write rediculous articles. Smh

K-Tuck2947d ago (Edited 2945d ago )

I guess you missed these parts: "As a stylistic choice, muted tones and limited color palettes make sense. It fits the mold." || "Though it may certainly seem this way, this isn't an argument against themes that favor a monochromatic visual style."

How nice of them to give us more control over graphical settings as a way to *completely* avoid taking accountability for the broken Xbox settings.

bondsmx3d ago

Well, I still crashed like 5 times last night within two hours. So there’s that.

anast2d ago

I had to stop. The game is not good. I'd rather play Skyrim and that game isn't that good either.

I Think It's About Time We Realize Fallout 4 Wasn't That Bad

Ahmed from eXputer: "2015's Fallout 4 received harsh criticism upon launching, but I think it was unwarranted and the game deserves more praise than it got."

helicoptergirl8d ago

It was totally that bad. I couldn't finish the campaign it was so bland and boring as I recall. Got so sick of it. 1000 stimpaks on hard. It is very rare that I play half a game and then just quit. I usually always finish it. But i was so bored with this game I just stopped and never went back and never regretted it. Just thinking about that game makes me shudder

Furesis8d ago

That's exactly what happened to me too lmao
Fallout 4 is not a fallout game period it's a bethesda game

Vits8d ago

The comparison with Skyrim is mind-boggling. Yes, Skyrim has streamlined many of the systems that Morrowind introduced. However, it did not tamper with the core of the Elder Scrolls franchise; it did not diminish the freedom and sense of exploration that made Bethesda RPGs famous. Fallout 4, on the other hand, did exactly that to the Fallout series. It eliminated what made Fallout such a beloved series to play. There are no consequences for your choices, no reason to explore, and barely any interesting set pieces in the game.

It's not terrible, but it's a painfully mediocre game in a franchise that typically doesn't produce such mediocrity. So that is why people see it as bad, the bar is just much higher.

anast8d ago

They both feel the same because they are, it's just that one has swords and magic and the other has swords and guns.

anast8d ago

I'm replaying it now. It sucks. I'm about 30 hours in and thinking about quitting again. I am so tired of the dialogue I just spam a random button because it doesn't matter. The upgrade just feels like a graphical mod, everything else is not good.

Good-Smurf8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I couldn't play the game as-is it was insanely boring and grindy and the grind itself are not fun at all.
Mods helped me stomach the game a bit better but after a while I just stopped playing and uninstalled it because the game did nothing after the first few hours to give me any motivation to keep playing it, it just became a mindless looter shooter with obsession in settlement building and defending.
Compared to F3 and FNV, F4 was barely a mediocre game it wasn't bad but it's also very forgettable entry.

MrDead8d ago

It's not that bad after 300+ mods that fix it's issues and make the game fun... but lets not talk about mods right now as they are f****d.
