Doom Open Beta Impressions: Shaping Up to be One Hell of a Game

"The Doom Open Beta is getting an unjustified amount of negative feedback. I don’t know what people are so sore about but it is by no means a bad game. Maybe they’re disappointed? Maybe it’s a bunch of people who grew up playing modern FPS that are getting their asses whooped? I couldn’t say. But this Doom game – the multiplayer at least – is very fun."

While some of the feedback may be "unjustified", a lot of it isn't. Doom is the culmination of 'identity crisis'. It wants to be an old school shooter while also trying to be a modern one. Go play an old school shooter like Quake 3 or Unreal tournament and then come back and play Doom. The movement speed is way to slow, the loadout system ruins the arena experience of map control, the demon power up is free kills galore, and many of the guns are either underpowered or overpowered. While the skill gap is wider in doom then most modern shooters it's still heavily compressed. Movement was a major skill factor of shooters of old and a persons skill could be assessed on their movement skill alone. Shot prediction is almost completely unessessary as its very easy to track and aim at targets. Now, with doom being so slow, it's nearly impossible to dodge shots or create any sort of staggered movement to make it hard to be hit. The rocket launcher was always a weapon that was used to control areas, keep people from items, as well as send people flying back/bounce them out of control. Now, being hit with rockets does absolutely nothing. Doesn't push them, bounce them, or stagger them in any way. Players walk right through them and blast you away with the super shotgun. Also, why is it so hard to detect when you're being shot from behind? This needs to be addressed.
The demon completely removes any level of skill required to get frags and gaining control the map. The whole game revolves around waiting for the demon rune to spawn, get mass amounts of kills, repeat. There needs to be a way to defend against the demon or remove it altogether probably through a different mode.
Also, do people really want a level up system in an arena shooter? It just feels forced in and out of place for doom or any arena shooter for that matter.
It's obvious the game was built with consoles in mind first and PC second. They needed to cater to the modern FPS call of duty market to maximize sales and push copies through accessibility. But Why couldn't they give PC players a PC version with some of these unnessesary console elements removed or changed. Speed the game up, make movement a skill factor, add weapon pickups, remove the demon, and just maybe this would be a so called classic arena-style shooter.
