This is what happens for smaller games and developers with limited resources: though choices have to be made about where to launch a game. Of course the lesser selling / lesser fitting console is left behind

G20WLY2955d ago

Exactly this. It's a shame, but they'll go where the big bucks are first and may never make it to the other platforms due to time or budgetary constraints that could otherwise eat into the next game's development.

Automatic792955d ago

That's not always necessarily true look at a game like SOMA which launched on the more popular PS4. The game flopped for being on a single platform. It would have benefited from launching on both consoles.

gangsta_red2955d ago

Exactly, Tearaway(?) flopped also. And I am sure there are other games that launched on the more popular system that didn't do the expected sales.

Being on the most popular system doesn't guarantee you success. You would think a smaller company would manage to find as many outlets as possible to have their game on.

_-EDMIX-_2955d ago

How do you know they could even afford that type of development?

Sunny_D2955d ago

Tearaway is a game that was designed by a first party studio. There would be no point wondering how it would do on another system because it wouldn't happen.

TFJWM2955d ago

SOMA didn't flop it might not have sold alot but it did ok.

What makes you think that porting to other platforms would have even paid for the cost of the port, they are very small and it took them 5 years just to make SOMA on PC and PS4.

maniacmayhem2955d ago

I don't think SOMA flopped but it's definitely not doing the numbers the creators might have wanted to do, especially compared to other games like it.

@Gangsta

"You would think a smaller company would manage to find as many outlets as possible to have their game on."

Maybe learn to read. The interview clearly touched on that issue. They are a small studio that doesn't have the manpower or resources to do that. Hence they said it's a tough position they're in they choose the option with the highest opportunity for success. It may end up like Tropico 5 (also by Kalypso games fyi) which is now releasing on Xbox One after making money off PS4 and PC sales.

TripleCs2954d ago

@gangsta_red

"Being on the most popular system doesn't guarantee you success"

You and MichaelLito79 are completely missing the point.. I don't think this developer or anyone here is saying that putting your games on the most popular system will automatically guarantee or grant you success but what it will do is give you a higher chance at success if your game is on the system with the larger install base vs the system with a smaller install base which makes sense because the larger your install base is the more potential customers you have to sell your game too.

Whirlwind_Fanfare_082954d ago

Nice try, but SOMA didn't flop.

killer_goat2954d ago

But it does increase your chances of success.

pyroxxx2954d ago

did not flop because it was on a single platform,.. (PS it is on PC forever)Maybe flopped cause it is not very good,..

gangsta_red2954d ago

@Chevalier

Maybe learn to comprehend, I read the article and fully aware of their situation which is why I said,

"You would think a smaller company would manage to find as many outlets as possible to have their game on."

Meaning that even if you are small you still find ways to get your product out to as many people as possible.

@BadboyC

"the system with a smaller install base which makes sense because the larger your install base is the more potential customers you have to sell your game too."

Smaller by how much though? People are acting like the install base for Xbox One is so small that a game like this has no chance of becoming a hit if it was on Xbox One only.

And like I said before there is no bigger chance of a higher install base guaranteeing your game is a success. There is a much higher chance of that if your game is on as many different outlets as possible.

Wh15ky2954d ago (Edited 2954d ago )

@gangsters_red

"Meaning that even if you are small you still find ways to get your product out to as many people as possible"

But they have found a way.

They have decided they don't have the sufficient resources to make multiple versions of their game so they have decided to launch on the console which gets their "product out to as many people as possible".

Chevalier2954d ago

""You would think a smaller company would manage to find as many outlets as possible to have their game on."

Meaning that even if you are small you still find ways to get your product out to as many people as possible. "

Wow are you stupid?! They clearly said they DO NOT have the man power or resources to do both. You're asking me to comprehend and yet can't seem to read and comprehend yourself. It's a tough business choice they are forced to make, but, they choose the venue that gives them the highest opportunity for success. Also that was the point being small they're doing exactly that getting to as many people as possible.

To simplify if you're still having trouble comprehending 40 million >>> 20 million.

Pongwater2954d ago

"The game flopped for being on a single platform."

It's not on a single platform, and it didn't flop. There goes the basis for your whole comment.

tough choice?? more like a no brainer buddy!!!

Christopher2955d ago

It sucks, but, honestly, not a major loss.

killer_goat2954d ago

Not major but still a loss. Things like this can damage a consoles reputation. I still believe that the more games a system gets, the better.

XanderZane2955d ago

There have been many games that hit the PS4 first and then ended up on the XB1. A few examples include Outlast, Ollie Ollie, Rocket League, Don't Starve, etc.. It works the other way too with games like Minecraft, World of Tanks, Brothers: A Tale of Two Son, P-vs-Z: Garden Warfare coming to PS4 after being on XB1 first. This happens on BOTH platforms, so not really a big deal. If this developer wants to sell more copies of Dungeon 2 he will bring the game out on both XB1 and PC as well. That's a no brainer right there. I actually have never heard of this game. I've heard of Dungeon Siege 3 and Dungeon Defenders, but not this game.

Phunkydiabetic12955d ago

All those games were released early on in the Xbox's life. Early on before publisher's realized what a shit show Xbox is and how much the PS4 is dominating. You wont be seeing much released first on xbox then ported over anymore.

Chevalier2954d ago

http://www.dualshockers.com...
http://www.gamegrin.com/new...

Or they just won't bother because they don't expect to make any money off Xbox One sales to make it worth their time. This game already had an Xbox One version and it still isn't coming to XB1. Mages in fact were exclusive to Xbox systems for all of last gen and started that way and even they announced no more exclusives for XB1.

Like Phunky says, those examples were relatively early on. If small studio's want the best chance for success and can only afford to do one option expect PS4 to continually win out.

With larger studios there are some games hitting XB1 however, Arslan and recently announced Attack on Titan getting XB1 versions for the west by Tecmo Koei for example.

jznrpg2954d ago

They paid for PvZ2 timed exclusivity

XanderZane2953d ago

@Phunkydiabetic1
There are still a lot of games coming to XB1 first now. Games like Gigantic, Below, Cuphead, Blues & Bullets etc..

There's a lot more Indies coming.

http://www.cinemablend.com/...

So yes, you'll still be seeing a lot of first releases on XB1 still. Nothing has changed really. Sure there will be MORE on the PS4, but it's been like that since the PS4 launched.
