5 Reasons Not to Get Excited About Heavy Rain (Yet)

PS3 Informer Writes:

"Heavy Rain is in development by French studio Quantic Dream. Their last game, Indigo Prophecy, was plodding, expensive, pretentious and littered with – you guessed it – quicktime events. The title failed to sell enough copies to recoup the heavy amount of investment that publishers Atari put into the game, and it helped to contribute to Atari's near-bankruptcy in 2007."

I am surprised how much hype there is for a game which -- so far -- has shown nothing really interesting in terms of gameplay, story, or technical achievement.

Bombibomb5737d ago

Yeah you totally agree with this then?

"In the trailers that we have seen so far, the graphics for this game, which by one account “sets a new standard for current gen” look pretty much like all the other titles we have seen for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 so far: drab and muddy. We hate to say it folks, but Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune looks lightyears better than this game. Heavy Rain appears to feature a lot of low-res textures, which undoubtedly contribute to the “uncanny valley” feeling that the main character and, indeed, the entire game has going for it."

Anyone that isn't a blind bastard will disagree with this. You're just another 360 supporter.

Whoooop5737d ago

The hype is based on their past work... They are good at creating cinematic and story oriented games.

It's like if Bungie was developing a game for a long time without giving any details, most HALO/Bungie fans would still be very exited about it even without knowing much of the game.

clinker5737d ago

But Drake's Fortune DOES look better than heavy rain.

Bombibomb5737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

CGI quality graphics VS cartoonish graphics. Yeah you totally make sense.

PS3informer.com has been busted before for trying to spread false information.

laved5737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

Please try to understand that the game is over a year from being released, thus the graphics most likely will not be as polished as the finished product. Also Uncharted doesn't have cartoony graphics.

Laexerias5737d ago

WE ALL ARE GOING TO DIE!!

btw. totally retard reasons for not getting excited about that game,
the graphics? yeah, just when i saw the drips of rain in the face of the protagonist i was like: wow.. wet beauty, lul!
Story? Paha it will be a masterpiece of a story, like Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit) was, think about every step you make could change it.
Quick Time Action.. aha, its the most evil thing ever and you can blame everything on it? No not rly, Fahrenheit wasnt hyped much, it was a lone warrior.
I just wanted to defend Fahrenheit, it was a great experience on XBOX and PLAYSTATION 2. (There was a xbox version, right?)
Nevermind, Heavy Rain is going to be better than Fahrenheit, you will see. q_Q

clinker5737d ago

Why is there so much irrational support in this thread for a game that nobody has played yet?

The fact is, Quantic Dream's last game was far from a massive success, so I think it is correct to be skeptical and see past all the clever marketing hype.

GUNS N SWORDS5737d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

i don't think many gamers will let go of $60 bucks on a game that's not really a game more like an interactive movie.

IGN's going to hit this game pretty hard on both "Gameplay" and "Lasting Appeal"

the characters do look nice though.

is it going to have co-op or online play?

Tacki5736d ago

IGN's review of Indigo Prophecy for the PS2:
http://ps2.ign.com/articles...

"Closing Comments
Indigo Prophecy is not a perfect game. There are camera and control issues, the graphics aren’t stellar, and the action sequences can be imprecise at points. However, the game’s sound, story, and characters are so strong, and the variety of situations players will find themselves in is so large, that at no point is this a boring play experience. An average gamer can expect to put in about 12 to 15 hours to run through this game, though depending on how good you are with the action sequences you can definitely get through faster. However, if you’re rushing through this game, you’re not playing it properly. For anyone craving a new, twisting suspense story with a little action mixed in, you’ll definitely come away from Indigo Prophecy as a satisfied gamer, and will remember it for a long while after."

OVERALL: 8.4

They actually gave pretty good scores to both the replay value and the gameplay. Now this isn't exactly an indication of what Heavy Rain WILL do... but if it manages to push all those things from their last game even further and add in some new stuff at the same time then I don't see how it could get any lower than the scores in those two areas. Again, you never know what's going to happen... but they enjoyed Indigo Prophecy which Heavy Rain should be a 'spiritual successor' to.

InMyOpinion5736d ago

"If nothing else, Sony and Quantic Dream have mastered the art of marketing, by withholding as much information about the title as possible and allowing fanboys to fill in the blanks with their wildest speculations."

TapiocaMilkTea5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

I think I might like this game. I think it is more of a detective type game, no shooting and killing. I can see 1 million possible endings to this game, seems like you can change the story with all the different choices you make throughout the game. It will be an instant hit if they can manage to make a very good story with many possible scenarios and unrestricted character actions and movement.
Unfortunately with the exception of Final Fantasy, graphic intensive RPGs usually have lack of story and contents, we'll see how this one play out.

osamaq5736d ago

Alan Wake will eat this game alive, by its superior graphics and Open World and action based and story line and thriller events .
God Bless Microsoft for choosing the best Always

power of Green 5736d ago

I'm not a big fan of pre rendered video, passing off as graphical milestones either.

I purchased IP( Indigo Prophecy) on XBL originals and played it twice after deciding it was wasting space on my HDD.

This title is over hyped.

DeadIIIRed5736d ago

It seems the 360 boys are still a little irate over Too Human flopping.
I don't care if you think its prerendered( which is kinda stupid considering the first five seconds states that its "Actual Gameplay Footage." No, I'm satisfied that this game looks far better than anything the 360 has or will ever crap out.

So have fun flaming like the fan boys you are, we still get the better games no matter how you spin it.

Pr3-M3d_G4M3R5736d ago

You guys dont even know what youre talking about. Indigo Prophecy was ahead of its time as for games, it was THE most interactive and story driven ps2 game. The only reason they didnt sell well was because the market wants fast shooters or some other crap. IP is an amazing game, I couldnt believe how good it is, if heavy rain is anything like IP then it will be amazing. Most of the people on this stupid post havent even played IP so if you havent you cant use the fact that IP didnt sell well to be skeptical of this game

yaboi5736d ago

1. baised
2. worthless
3. better things to do
4. anything
5. anything

BISHOP-BRASIL5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

Don't want to be hard on you guys (the ones saying it will not play great or whatever), but this is an Adventure game, yes it don't play as an Action game (that is the point), the interactions are more variable and less repetitive, it's more story driven and way less combat driven.

Maybe it's not for you, maybe you prefer braindead shooters. But this don't mean it's a bad a game.

Anyway, too soon to determine anything, can go either way.

RememberThe3575736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

What makes your opinion matter? If you don't like what the Hiphopgamer has to say don't listen. You come on here spouting all this BS, but you never stop to think that maybe no one cares what you have to say. The beauty is that this is the internet, everyone has a voice. So, get off your high-horse, cut the negative crap, and show some respect to your fellow gamers.

@below: See thats all you had to do. Explain where your coming from. If you don't then it just seems like baseless BS. I don't agree about Hiphopgamer, but now I know where your coming from cause I completely agree with you about 50 cent. I say keep it 2pac, keep it real.

Presentist5736d ago

All I was saying man, is that Hiphop gamers opinion is invalid, much like 50cent's fame is invalid, but people follow them because of money and image.

Genki5736d ago

I'd love to hear this, and with reasons as well.

Presentist5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

The only site I trust is IGN, take that for what it's worth I don't give a sh*t.

N4G has become a bastion of stupidity, thanks to the insurmountable fanboy invasion on both sides, it's impossible to speak negativity against an overhyped title without being called a "bot", even though most of my complaints have substantial value, most of you are just too blind with hype to care or open your ears.

Last bubble, so later.

plain rice5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

I'm still waiting for an answer to Genki's questions. I'll give you another bubble to respond and I hope some others do as well. I want you to enlighten us of your statement on what is valid or an invalid opinion.

Genki5736d ago

fair enough. I would advise not trusting any particular media outlet though, particularly big ones like IGN with such close ties to the industry. Advertising dollars are big bucks, after all, take that however you like. The problem with independent outlets and blogs however...is that any idiot with half a brain and ten fingers can jump behind a keyboard and shoot off at the mouth with their never-ending stupidity.

For those reasons and many more, I don't trust any of them. That's what demos and videos are for if you ask me, but I'm still not clear on what you consider a valid opinion though?

What makes one opinion more valid than another? I believe that regardless of how much clout you have or how big your rep is, when it comes to subjective topics, everyone's is weighed the same, but that's just me.

masterprince1015736d ago

the only thing i think can make an opinion invalid is if it bases itself on statistics or facts which are false or known to be false. or the person does not state that it is of their intention to purposefully have a bias knowingly.Other than that even biased opinion is a fair opinion. as long as you say something such as i'm a ps2fanboi or an xbot and state your opinion afterwards cause i know i have no reason to flame you i now know where your opinion comes from. but don't have an agenda behind your words and don't bring false facts into the arena

Genki5735d ago

I completely agree with that, I was just interested in Presentists idea of it, because it doesn't seem in line with that philosophy.

Don't you get to choose which quicktime event you want to do from a bunch of different button presses that use items that could help you in life or death situations? and didn't they say that the death of the character you're playing wouldn't result in a game over? That sounds incredibly awesome and innovative to me.

CNIVEK5736d ago

"..didn't they say that the death of the character you're playing wouldn't result in a game over? That sounds incredibly awesome and innovative to me."

Yeah, that's REAL freakin' "innovative"....exce pt that THOUSANDS of games have done it BEFORE. Did you just start playing video games YESTERDAY??? o_0

HipHopGamerShowFan5737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

Like I wrote on the Gamer Zone, this is a 360 fanboy hater who wrote this. HipHopGamer may also agree

Silogon5737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

Wha???? Hiphop gamer will also agree, huh? I wonder if Hiphop gamer is gonna agree with what you wear tomorrow? Better check and make sure.

What a joke. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the guy's rants and his show. I think he is very alive and colorful and puts a great deal of effort in his enthusiasm for his passion, but to single out 1 man to back up your 1 theory is lending lint to sheep.

I don't agree or disagree with this write up cause each point that is made against it, another can be made for it. True unbias comes from knowing all sides of the spectrum and then rationally debating it within your own head. Trying to deliver an opinion is never proof of reason, rather a way of getting your thoughts to the main stream and that is what was done here.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1271d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1271d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1271d ago (Edited 1271d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121428d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121428d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.
