The upcoming Star Wars game from developer Visceral, won't be an open-world RPG title if game's co-writer is to be believed.

I am sure we will find our when EA does their event around E3. This sounds like admission free, pay at the door.

jb2272966d ago

Godwilling this will be true. Visceral & Amy Hennig is a match made in narrative driven linear action/adventure heaven, and open world rpg is the worst set of words that could be attached to a project from them imo. I'm fine w/ whatever character they plan to focus on, but I just don't want yet another open world rpg from creators who were responsible for 2 of the best linear adventure titles from last gen in Dead Space & Uncharted.

hay2966d ago

I don't care if it's open or not. I sure hope as hell it is GOOD. I crave for good Star Wars game.

jb2272966d ago

@hay

Most definitely, quality is the first barrier for sure. I mean maybe Visceral could pull off an open world & make it great & I'd probably buy it either way, but I see it like this, Visceral & Amy Hennig would make an amazing narrative driven slightly linear TPS adventure game, Bioware are the kings of the open world rpg, let those two devs practice what they know for these first games. I'm all for an open world rpg SW game for sure, but if we have the opportunity to get multiple different games, let's use them...let the devs craft titles in their wheelhouse, give them the time to perfect them, let J.J. sign off on them & keep them in the new continuity, and let them rip.

Kleptic2966d ago

^I see what you're saying...

but you're typing about what would happen with Visceral and Amy Hennig teaming up to make a linear star wars game...before EA bought both...

All I mean is that form your own opinion, but safe to keep expectations in check...rest assured that the boxes with 'accessible', 'zero risk', and 'mass appeal' are checked before development even began...and that the people responsible for this game have different business cards now, of which are much heavier than they used to be...Visceral already plopped out two floaters since being absorbed by EA...and the heavy hand on battlefront sure didn't help DICE...

creative freedom plays a major aspect in developer 'talent'...and if there is one publisher that can remove all of it...EA stands alone...The only hope is the weight of Disney on top of them to get it right...

JKSimmons2966d ago

I'm really curious to see what this game turns out to be. Especially with the creative talent behind the development.

VER1ON2966d ago

Judging from the job listings, you really would have expected an open-world rpg game. Now, I honestly don't know. Perhaps we're looking at an Uncharted-styled SW title.

Majister-Ludi2966d ago

It's such a shame. An open world stars game sounded amazing especially made by these guys. Hopefully this game has some depth unlike the latest release.

Erik73572965d ago (Edited 2965d ago )

^ Please we have enough of crappy half assed open world games that look bad compared to Witcher, Fallout, or GTA.

Now a linear story driven game sounds great cause we have a lot of terrible single player campaigns in this industry right now and its great to look forward to another franchise other than uncharted or Bioshock for a good single player campaign .

garrettbobbyferguson2966d ago

Here's to hoping that Dead Space 3, Army of Two, and Battlefield Hardline aren't both indicative of the quality of this upcoming title (aka complete crap).

jb2272966d ago

Dead Space 3 was far from crap. It might not have fit the Dead Space brand, but it was a great game in its own right. Hardline wasn't great by any stretch but it was definitely the best Battlefield campaign I've personally played. Army of Two is straight trash though

garrettbobbyferguson2966d ago

@jb227

Dead Space took out the best element of the series (horror) and turned it into a coop shooter. The game was horrible and even the biggest Dead Space fans I know will tell you to avoid that game like the plague.

Hardline is just a clusterf*** of cops and robbers and didn't deserve its own separate game. Battlefield was already a sour taste in my mouth and that game made it even worse.

jb2272966d ago

I fully agree that DS3 didn't feel like a proper Dead Space game, but it was basically a much more quality version of Lost Planet for the most part. The game itself isn't bad if you separate the experience from the expectations of the franchise.

As far as Hardline I don't play mp personally but I've heard that the mp was bad. The sp wasn't amazing by any means but for my personal tastes I thought it told a better story & was a bit more fun than the previous BF campaigns. Seemed like there was more thought put into it at least. To each their own though, Visceral is definitely capable of quality any way you slice it though, DS 1 & 2 are proof positive of that.

Kleptic2966d ago

@jb227...your argument is all over the place...

So, Dead Space 3 is a 'good' game, and 'far from crap', but only if you remove it from its own franchise and the expectations created by that?

you're a marketing miracle...

and Hardline's single player is better?...than what exactly?...a franchise notorious for almost no single player? BC1 and BC2 tried single player (that was the entire idea behind the spin off) and was light years ahead of Hardline's laughable cop drama thing...and I'd be blown away if someone said BF3's and BF4's single player was actually worse than Hardline...I'd comfortably say it has been downhill since BC2. Either way, playing off Visceral's involvement with Hardline, as if its not the most clear indication of what happens when EA gets involved with talented devs..I don't know, man...It just seems like you've already made up your mind that whatever comes out is going to be ok with you.

I'm kinda hoping for another tactical squad shooter....or maybe i just miss Republic Commando too much

Alexious2966d ago

Nah, this will be story centric with Amy Hennig leading the project.

PhucSeeker2966d ago (Edited 2966d ago )

Tactical squad shooter doesn't mean it won't be story centric. Spec ops the line is one. Tho admittedly, the squad commands in that game was kind of shit.

Erik73572965d ago

Agreed, i'm seeing star wars 1313 reincarnation which is great!

Gaming_Since_The_80s2966d ago

I hear you! I loved Republic Commando! The ending definitely stuck with me, even until now!

Either way, we can't really lose with Amy Hennig on the job!

Herbalistic2966d ago

Its going to be a 3rd person cover based shooter

AizenSosuke2966d ago

Stars wars : Battlefront 3rd person RPG shooter edition!

Germany72966d ago

I'm expecting something like Star Wars 1313, a tps shooter.

TheOneWhoIsTornApart2966d ago

That is exactly what I want from this game honestly.

Unfortunately, Ninja Theory Isn't Actually Safe From Microsoft

Ninja Theory might have games in the pipeline, but that doesn't mean Xbox won't close it for no reason

Alot of speculation on their part. Ninja Theory has two games that have been green lighted and are in the works. Yes it’s always a possibility they could be closed but no matter how you feel about the Senua games. They do make a quality game. I personally think MS is going lay low for a bit, after the firestorm they experienced last week.

darthv723h ago

I really hope one of them is a long awaited sequel of heavenly sword or enslaved. Both are good games that deserve a 2nd chance... or at least a reboot.

blackblades1h ago

I'm 100% doubt its heavenly sword for obvious reason and Enslave 99% doubt it.

romulus2315m ago

"Sony Computer Entertainment retains the intellectual property of Heavenly Sword", so that's not happening. Sony should let Santa Monica Studios make a Heavenly Sword sequel.

Einhander19724h ago

It's not for no reason.

The reason is they made two games that were underwhelming (Bleeding Edge) and didn't/aren't going to grow the user base for game pass.

They spent 5-7 years and this was what they produced, it's easy to see how they would be on the short list for termination at this point.

Sciurus_vulgaris3h ago

One thing to point out was that all the recently closed studios were under Bethesda. Before being purchased by MS, Bethesda had a slew of poor or under performing titles (Evil Within 2, Prey (2017), Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, Young Blood, and initially Fallout 76 ). I don’t think, Ghost Wire Tokyo, Deathloop, Redfall and sadly even High-Fi: Rush performed well after the buyout.

Einhander19723h ago(Edited 3h ago)

I bet this game with a 5-7 year dev cycle being launched directly onto game pass is going to generate less tangible cash profit than any of those games.

I'm sure Microsoft will brag about players or sword swings or some other pointless statistic, but those don't make cash money.

Lightning773h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Apparently Ninja Theory is safe From being closed down https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

Already working on a new game. They are a 80 person team and relatively inexpensive I suppose to any other publisher

Buuuuut.

Yeaah sorry this is MS, I don't believe anything MS says. They have to be joking if they think anyone will believe them besides gullible Xbox fanboys. Once again MS needs to earn my trust back. Just when they earn some trust back, they always seem to destroy it and have to work to get it back. I still think they're getting shut down and canceling whatever game they're making because the game won't sell, again MS fault for not advertising it.. This company man...

FPSRUSSIA3h ago

the article talks about that to i recommend checking it out when you get a chance.

romulus2311m ago

Tango was probably working on something new as well.

Knightofelemia3h ago

I don't see Microsoft shutting off the lights to Ninja Theory. As a studio they actually have talent and have released some decent games. I love Enslaved maybe a sleeper hit but it's one of my favorites. Only way I see Microsoft shutting off the lights is if Ninja Theory releases games that sink faster then a lead weight. And there are fans of Ninja Theory one thing I would hate to see is Ninja Theory ending up like Bioware. Loosing all their talent and being a former shell of what they use to be.

Elda8m ago

Never say never. Tango Gameswork were just as talented as Ninja Theory & they were shut down.

Elda10m ago

It was just announced that MS gave NT the greenlight for its next game. I just hope it's not another Hellblade. https://www.yahoo.com/tech/...

F*** AI

"Hey Copilot, what's a good meme to prove I dislike AI".... https://giphy.com/clips/sou...

Einhander19721d 8h ago

Two trillion dollar company that just can't wait to put as many people possible out of work as fast as possible.

It feels like every single thing they do is making gaming worse and destroying the industry.

....you know it takes people to program the AI.... right? It isnt like it is sentient. We haven't reach skynet level of situation or anywhere close to the matrix just yet.

That's next Thursday.

Einhander19724h ago(Edited 4h ago)

It takes a people to program the AI then that AI is used for who knows how many games eliminating countless jobs which only grows as AI is used for more and more game creation functions.

What you're saying is so ridiculously short sighted and truly larking any kind of understanding and foresight.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead20h ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan19h ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

helicoptergirl20h ago

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.
