GameSpot: Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty Review

GameSpot writes: "Even though the Ratchet and Clank series has stuck with the same formula for all six console games, each new release has brought a tweak that has made the experience feel unique. From upgradable weapons to motion controls, the series has seen a sprinkling of new ideas without messing with the basic play mechanics that work so well. Quest for Booty doesn't bring anything particularly noteworthy to the table, but it does take advantage of its bite-sized serving portion in one key way: It focuses purely on fun. Whereas previous games have lost their way with too many minigames and side quests that detract from the core running-and-shooting action, Quest for Booty banishes the superfluous ventures and showcases a nonstop tour of Ratchet's most exciting moments. Its strict reliance on baddie-shooting, bolt-collecting gameplay won't convert anyone tired of those activities, but people looking for a perfectly paced platformer with tight controls and impressive visuals will fall in love all over again."

The Good:
+Some of the most impressive visuals on the system
+Extremely focused action
+Great soundtrack
+Excellent pacing
+No lame minigames wasting your time

The Bad:
-Captain Quark and Clank are missing
-No arena missions
-No incentive to play more than once

Nothing's changed at Gamespot

MAR-TYR-DOM5727d ago

I only wished that this wouldn't cost $15, otherwise i would have bought it already. There are just too many games coming out this holiday and my wallet's going to take a hit. Hopefully they will have a sale soon.

Megaton5727d ago

It's $15. Bought it on Thursday.

Lasted about 3.5 hours before completion. Thought it was worth it. Looks the same as ToD, new wrench abilities, far less weapons, but the ones included happen to be among my favorite from ToD.

Milky Joe5727d ago

Quit ya whining, it's £10 on the UK Store. That's pretty much $20.

No, but seriously, it's good and you should get it.

rexor07175727d ago

This game is just as worth it as the whole $60 R&CF:ToD game. LOL.

gaffyh5727d ago

I guess 7.5 is pretty good, it should be more IMO, cos this is a PSN game, wherease it seems like they have reviewed it as a full PS3 game.

Arena battles should have been included, but Clank could NOT be included cos that would have completely ruined the story of the game (cos he's been abducted).

Will hopefully get the disc based version when it is released.

shysun5727d ago

My bad, I added 10 dollars to my wallet. I did know I still had 5$ left. It's still worth it.

matchgrade5727d ago

I'm no fan of Gamespot, but it's a fair review. Every R&C game has been great IMO, but the Cons they listed really are heavy-hitters. I'm used to having all 3 as a major part of my R&C experience.

SlyGuy5726d ago

first it was "too much variety".

Now too little variety since clank and quark are missing?

tsk tsk tsk.

but I know I am going to miss Captain Quirks melodrama queen / uber sissy persona (the guy simply cracks me up with how he pounds his chest one minute and is hiding under a desk the next) and Clanks abilities. Hopefully I will find time this weekend to try it out for myself.

Splenda145727d ago

guys watch the video review and how they justify there Ratchet Future review its funny

Chris Hansen5727d ago

The reviewer makes it sound like Quest for Booty is one of the most awesome games out right now, yet Gamespot still gave it a 7.5...

TheHater5727d ago

lol...true. I was expecting a 8-9 from this review base on the video.

shysun5727d ago

They knocked R&C:F for haven TOOOOOO much variety. Now they say this one is missing the extra missions(ie Quark/Clank). lol this guys are Crazy.

Why o why5727d ago

they will never live that down. Lets see if they say the same thing about banjo

WhittO5727d ago (Edited 5727d ago )

I think a 7.5 is ok for this game, i mean its not a full game - just like a planet level from TOD and its more expensive than a psn game, doesnt change much from TOD (which isnt a bad thing) but still its more like an expansion than a seperate game.

Last year i was piss*ed off when they gave 7.5 to TOD - that deserved more becasue it had so much more than what this is offereing, so you cant expect a high score for such a small game (compared to TOD)

Man... what i wouldnt give to have a full PS5 UHD of all the R&C games in one collection. i guess streaming them on PS+ is the next best thing (or naturally a PS3)

Aloymetal541d ago

Rift was a joy to play, absolutely beautiful.

FallenAngel1984541d ago

They couldn’t make PS2 versions of those R&C games like they did with the J&D games?

mkis007541d ago

considering they are ps3 games that never had ps2 versions....no.

CobraKai540d ago

Yeah? You might wanna double check that.

mkis007540d ago

Kobra
What fan that waited for launch day needs to know? There were 4 ps2 games the rest starting with tools was ps3 only. Quest for booty, a crack in time, nexus, full frontal assault were ps3 games.

FallenAngel1984540d ago

You really saying Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal and Ratchet: Deadlocked weren’t on PS2? 🤨

theandinator92540d ago

Even Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank had PS2 versions...

mkis007540d ago

Of course I wasn't talking about the actual ps2 games...why would they need to make ps2 versions of ps2 games? That is why I only included the ps3 games in my comment.

FallenAngel1984540d ago

@ no

You must’ve misunderstood what I asked for.

I’m saying they should’ve made PS2 Classic versions of these Ratchet & Clank titles on PS4 so they’d be downloadable just like Jak & Daxter had rather than just streaming the PS3 versions

mkis007539d ago

Ya I realized you meant emulated versions after the fact.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is amazing. I really hope Insomniac are working on more. I'm always up for another Ratchet & Clank game.

CobraKai540d ago

I think it’s still the only “Next Gen” game that truly looks next gen.

Levii_92541d ago

Sick ! R&C is still one of my favourite franchises.

Ranking the Ratchet and Clank Games from Worst to Best

From Xfire: "Insomniac Games first introduced the unlikely duo of Ratchet and Clank back in 2002 on the PlayStation 2. Since then, the series has taken audiences on a journey that has spanned not just an entire galaxy, but multiple dimensions, with its most recent outings."

Levii_921043d ago

Best games of the franchise are Up Your Arsenal, A Crack in Time, 2016 Remake and without a doubt the newest one Rift Apart. You simply can’t go wrong with these.

Man what a glorious game series.

neutralgamer19921043d ago

Only ones I don't like as much are all 4 one and full frontal assault other than that all games are awesome( even these are good games just not up to the standard of other games in the series)

victorMaje1043d ago

Nice article, good list, they're all fun & I love this game!
Rift Apart is spectacular.
Insomniac are wizards, I want their next game to be a new Resistance. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next.

DOMination-1043d ago

Ryan Mccaffrey said last week that Resistance 4 was in development but Sony cancelled it due to the high number of post-apocalyptic games around at the moment.

victorMaje1043d ago

Well that’s a shame. I feel they could do something truly special with today’s technology.

chicken_in_the_corn1043d ago

I'm looking forward to playing Rift Apart then the whole series sometime afterward. Up Your Arsenal is my favourite

Retro Review - Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty

Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty is typically regarded as one of the worst in the Ratchet & Clank series, and it’s clear why after playing it over the Holiday season. It is only set in one world with little story to be be had, the level design can be frustrating, and the lack of weapons (and anything new) make this short 3-hour entry worth skipping in the series.
