Rise of Games: Heavy Rain Preview

RoG write: "There must exalt ... There is nothing exceptional or fantastic .. And 'The reality simply .. .."

Already, precisely with these words today during our meeting David Cage, Director and Writer of Heavy Rain, commenting the presentation of the game. Exceptional, incredible, there are no words to describe what I witnessed today .... Entered in the little room for the presentation I have been sitting in the front row, a couple of metres from the screen from which I have witnessed few minutes later to an incredible spectacle (clearly speaking as a passionate videogame). But what we are interested in you and tell you with pleasure .... The game .... Well, developed by Quantic Dreams, there it is presented as more than a game, something that goes beyond the simple idea that we have to videogiocare ... Heavy Rain will be something different, completely innovative, something more adult and emotional. According to Cage games have evolved enough to move to a next level, they can tell true stories and realistic, involving the video player plays because it can do a story invented. In Heavy Rain you to create history. In the title of QD your actions affect the succession of events as never was the first .. " And if you want to know the truth, to hear such words, even I was left too surprised, I thought: "bah, they did the usual thing, 3 or 4 to choose actions that are taken at different story folds, but always those . I have never been so happy to be denied ...

We are getting more and more casual games and interactive movies... Remember .. games should be games... Enough with this "Our game is going to have the best facial expressions evar!1!!" or "Look! we have perfected the eye movement "

whats worse? Journalists drops their jaws for it :/

You're right. Gaming shouldn't evolve. We should just stick to the same old crap we've been playing for the past 10 years.

There aren't that many developers out there that are as talented as Quantic Dream so you're in luck. You won't see a lot of games like Heavy Rain. Instead, you'll just keep seeing the constant flood of crappy FPS and hack 'n slash games. No new genres because only Quantic Dream has the balls to try something new and succeed at it. Indigo Prophecy was loved by most of the people that actually got to PLAY the game.

Heavy Rain is for the adult gamers that want something new. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Just get back to your overdone genres.

I don't know if you read the article or not. It's not the best translation but it gives some more insight into the game and even states that it's not just a bunch of cutscenes that you push buttons through! And this person is impressed by the playable demo that was showcased. We only saw short clips from it! This guy actually got to see the developer walkthrough of it. You sound as if you're condemning it based on one short video.

This doesn't sound 'casual' to me if you've been reading everything on this game. It sounds like a unique experience with a very mature theme. You're not tethered to one path and every little thing you do has some influence on the story. I don't see why people believe it's all going to be interactive cutscenes when it's been stated by various sources that the game is far from that. It looks to usher in a new level of interactivity in gaming from the things I've heard about this little demo. The demo to me looks very much like a mystery/survival horror game and the overall 'mood' just seems amazing if you ask me. Atmosphere is no doubt going to play a large part in this game even if it's not all in the style that we've seen so far. Quantic Dream is looking to to use this game to connect with the players emotions... and I think that's something very few games are able to achieve.

I understand that currently this game may not interest everyone... but c'mon we've barely been shown anything and already there's folks jumping up to claim it's interactive cutscene garbage (when impressions of the demo would suggest otherwise).

Got to the part when they dropped this absurd buzz word

"videogiocare"

And then clicked out of it all. Don't try to impress us with words that don't mean $#*T. Don't oversell a product and or demo by trying to make up or coin a word you feel will catch on. this is stupid, pointless and absolutely absurd. I don't need these idiots coming upw ith words that don't exist to justify why we should spend 60 bucks on a game that offers up very little in way of gameplay, as opposed to button presses at the moment.

No one has seen what this game will fundamentally consist of and yet people are saying it's the best game ever made! Whatever. Make up some more "buzzwords" I'll coin one for you all "P#$$Y SQUIRTS" all of you at that site.

we don't know what the game will be like but for me its part of the reason why i like it because it mysterious and its trying to do things differently. For all we know the game could suck but if its anything like Fahrenheit then i am a happy camper.

Silogon5739d ago

I have no doubt that this team can make a great game. they've done it before. I have no doubt this game itself will not be, at the very least, good. I just tink right now it is a bit silly to coin words and talk about how great it is when no one has seen the actual game yet "keep in mind the demo shown is nothing to do with the real game" and all we have seen of gameplay is button presses.

I remain optomistic about it, though. I was the same with Killzone 2 and it turned out better than I had imagined so far.

cmrbe5739d ago

PS gamers really don't want another Lair hehe. I have alot of faith in QD with what they did in the past but i also had alot of faith in FR and SK and look at where they are now with Haze and Too Human. Nothing is a garuntee hit until its out and people play them.

Yep until we see alot more footage like KZ2 has now we really shouldn't be hyping this game as it might ultimately hurt it but excuse those that are genuinely hyped after seeing bits and pieces of this game which they see as amazing.

sephy 9 2 55739d ago (Edited 5739d ago )

what you need to see. There are various previews that you can look to that discussed the gameplay.

Here's two quotes:
"The first thing I noticed was the incredible camera system, which changed on occasion to different, highly dramatic angles from a number of atypical locations,"

"Whenever Madison would approach an interactive element, a small directional queue would fade into view on the bottom right corner of the screen. Pushing that direction would coax Madison to do that action. Speed and rhythm counted in these sections. For example, you could open the mailbox very slowly or quickly; even though the segment looked like a cutscene, you were still in control."

cmrbe5739d ago

but Siligons point is that we have only seen and know very little about the game and its silly to be hyping this game as the second coming of christ as people already are doing. Madison and the parts that we have seen is not even in the actual game.

I am not putting the game down at all. I am just saying lets be level headed and be realistic and get hyped about it when we actually know exactly what game it is. This just my opinion anyway.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1271d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1271d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1271d ago (Edited 1271d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1428d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121428d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1428d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121428d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121428d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.

Still have my origami crane they teach you how to make when you're installing for the first time.

it's been 10 years? wow, that was so fast, I feel like this console gen went fast as well although it hasn't. I really look forward to the PS5 this holiday season though.
