Rumor Debunked: Nintendo Denies Nikkei Wii U End of Production Report

NE:
A few hours ago, we reported a rumor that was first posted by Japanese news-outlet Nikkei. The company posted a report that indicated that Nintendo would be ceasing Wii U production this year. According to the report, the reason for this being that the console’s software sales have been low and that its hardware sales have been abysmal.

According to Nintendo themselves, that’s not the case.

The Big N went full Speedy Gonzalez and has recently debunked the rumor. The Big N has stated that they plan to continue with shipments. The console has been supply shortages due to the high sales of titles like Splatoon and Super Mario Maker. On April 27th, Nintendo plans to announce their yearly sales estimates, which includes all of their systems. The Wii U is apparently a part of the company’s fiscal year earnings.

Like I said that paper is often wrong. The haters don't like to hear this but will deny it anyway.

BrandanT2977d ago

Umm... Notice that they said "shipping units" not producing them.

iTechHeads2977d ago

Nintendo didn't say the rumor was false. They said they are not the source of.....you know what? Forget it. Explaining PR to you is likely a waste of time.

hatsume-miku2977d ago

From the article:
"plans to continue even production next fiscal year and beyond."

2pacalypsenow2977d ago (Edited 2977d ago )

Didn't Sega say the same thing about the Dreamcast? Right before they went down like the Titanic

Segata2977d ago

Nintendo has a crap ton of money and they are making a new console. SEGA was bankrupt and no longer make consoles. Different situation.

2pacalypsenow2977d ago (Edited 2977d ago )

Just proving a point that just because a Company says something it doesn't mean its true and that if a rumor surfaces its for a reason, you really think Nintendo will come out and say Yes stop buying the Wii U cuz were going to discontinue it.

Segata2977d ago

Nikkei said Wii U would be 250 dollars at launch and said NX would run on Android. Nikkei sucks and often wrong.

wonderfulmonkeyman2977d ago

Your point doesn't make any sense, because Nintendo's not in the same position now as Sega was back then.

2pacalypsenow2977d ago (Edited 2977d ago )

I didn't mean Nintendo as a company I meant the console, Sega said the Dreamcast was doing fine and not being discontinued after rumors surfaced. only to discontinue it Months later

iTechHeads2977d ago

Financially? No.
Wii U is a failure though, just like the dreamcast was. That is something they do have in common.

wonderfulmonkeyman2977d ago (Edited 2977d ago )

Again, even in terms of console, Nintendo's not in the same position Sega was.

Nintendo's actually making quite a nice bit of profit off of Amiibo and software sales with the Wii U, and they didn't have a bunch of different consoles releasing before it to give off the illusion that they don't plan on supporting their consoles for at least 5 years minimum.

The report was false.
The haters are sitting down to their crow dinner.
Let's drop it and move on.

deafdani2977d ago (Edited 2977d ago )

Regardless of whether this rumor was true or not, Nintendo was always going to deny it either way. They wouldn't admit it (if it was true), because that would hurt Wii U's sales, and Nintendo's stock. They gotta protect themselves, even if that means straight up lying.

Now, I'm not saying this is actually the case, because it's just as likely that they're saying the truth. My point is, none of us really know, and I think it's pretty naive from your part that you're willing to believe them so easily. And I'm not singling Nintendo out on this, I believe ANY company would lie if they had to protect their interests.

The only way to know if this is true or not is by waiting and seeing how it all turns out in the end.

They don't want us to know the wii u is gonna be killed. I still believe nikkei is telling the truth.

This is just like they denied the 3ds xl then they announced the 3ds xl

wonderfulmonkeyman2977d ago

No, they denied that they'd be bringing out a 3DS successor/hardware upgrade that year.
The XL is neither of those things; it's just a size upgrade.

Not comparable.

Nintendo Is A Bad Company, But We Can't Help Loving Them Anyway

TG: “Most of us also grew up with Nintendo, likely forming a nostalgic connection with games that have long been crowned as our personal favourites. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was an experience that shaped my view on open world fantasy, and Super Mario 64 changed my life like it did for millions of others. These titles have earned their place in history, and remain loved to this day for so many worthwhile reasons. We replay them and beg for remasters all while delving into their worlds time and time again because they mean that much to us. It’s a shame then that the company behind them often kicks its own sweet darlings to the curb.”

I never got the love for Nintendo games personally. The annoying vocalizations and ugly character designs do nothing for me.

Another very weird article.

Nintendo is a great company by almost all possible normal measures. The biggest one being: their own staff is happy, and they seem to be very happy, well compensated and retain rate is solid. They are also financially very stable, profitable, and cash rich, so shareholders love them.

Overall it is an extremely creative group of people, and their mission statement is fantastic as well "to put smiles on the faces of everyone we touch. We do so by creating new surprises for people across the world to enjoy together." The social impact is also massive, not to speak culturally. Additionally, they have a really strong core business, high customer retention rate and loyalty. Nintendo's reputation is extremely good, I think in the US alone they are 9th most reputable company, their customer service is better than the average company. Plus, the press gives them a pass, because they are Nintendo. But there's a reason why they do that, it's not "because they are Nintendo", there are more layers to the argument.

Then, then there's the random negative gamers online...and their "reputation" which is inside their heads. And their western ideas of how a Japanese company should behave or what they should do. But they have no right to ask a company to do anything for them, because they can vote with their wallets.

There's a small vocal community online who dislikes Nintendo for what they are, but then again, there's always a small vocal community that dislikes something.

Nintendo also disagrees with the Western world about IP, but most people call Westerners "hidoi!" when they emulate Tears of the Kingdom and do not experience it the way Nintendo wanted them (even if it is not the best visual way), because it is a matter of principle to them (Japanese are very much against anything close to plagiarism, and there are laws that are tight about creative works copying etc.)

The Western Braveheart "freedoom!" shouters need to understand that it is not an American company, nor they need to behave like one. They can have their own fights based on their principles (against emulation). And they very well may lose the battle with that and change, or find a new audience.

In the end, it is so very simple. Don't buy the products if you don't like a company, but there's no need to paint a picture that is unrealistic about Nintendo either.

MadLad352d ago

I hate virtually everything about their business practices, actually. Suing everybody for virtually anything, shooting down fan projects, games they never let devalue, their online infrastructure and how they handle BC.

They're lucky they make great games, because that's the only thing I feel they do right.

gold_drake352d ago

my issue with them, is the complete refusal to have decent tech for us.

and their odd censorship and lawsuits for modders.
