Microsoft Looking to Charge for TF2 Updates

Valve, in all their awesomeness, has been trying to release all new TF2 content to the consoles free of charge, unfortunately Microsoft doesn't feel the same way. Valve Founder, Gabe Newell says the console gaming model is getting in the way. "The big concern I have right now is our ability to provide updates. On the PC side, we've done as many as four updates in a day, and that's great: we can respond very quickly." says Newell at GC08 to videogaming247.

Sony looking to charge for something? Get the hell out of here.

sonarus5728d ago

Call me biased or whatever but this would really be the first time i am hearing sony is forcing the hand of developers to charge for updates.

However this isn't the first time i am hearing about it from Microsoft. Also didn't i hear that valve wasn't planning any PS3 updates for team fortress.

I am going to take this as a generalization. Saying consoles he is probably only referring to the 360 especially since Newell doesn't consider the PS3 at all.

And i approve of this message. LOl

Mao5728d ago

Gabe: "what's this PS3 you speak of? Does this thing really exist?"

Newell hates the PS3 cause his fat arsh is too lazy to adjust to different developmental processess. Insomniac needs to send someone down to slap him in the back of the head.

gamesR4fun5728d ago

Update: Sorry folks, I originally said this applied to Sony as well. There is no news of Sony charging for a TF2 update yet. Shame on me.

gaffyh5728d ago

Not surprised really, MS is the type of company that charges for every possible thing they can.

crck5728d ago

if that isn't their policy. Either way I doubt Gabe would know. He's obviously talking about MS but lumping all 3 companies together to toss into the fire pit.

Proxy5728d ago

What has he said that is false. He said "They want us to charge money for them, because that is in their model."

What does "them" refer to? Updates? Them can't possibly refer to this singular and specific update. Valve has said nothing specific.

crck5728d ago

Valve is basically claiming that Sony and Nintendo pressure devs/publishers to charge for updates. While Valve may be right I doubt they actually know anything about Sony's policies or PSN's certification process since they probably don't even have dev kits or any contact with Sony.

Definition of slander: a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report: a slander against his good name.

I have the superior PC version so I don't care about this gimped console version.

??? dont think sony would charge people for stuff thats free.

sentai5728d ago

Of course they wouldn't. It amazes me how Microsoft would even think about doing something like this.

UNCyrus5728d ago

hahaha, I really don't see why you're amazed that much? Coming from a company that's undergone countless anti-trust/monopoly lawsuits, this seems almost like expected behavior.

DavidMacDougall5728d ago

I swear this s**t angers me why put a f**king price on everything!!!!

Just die already you ****ing suits

sentai5728d ago

Maybe surprised is a bad word. Disgusted is more like it. I'm disgusted that Microsoft would not only make you pay for Live, but also pay for updates as well?

http://kotaku.com/5040417/t...

Kotaku only talks about 360 being charged.

anyways, Valve updating the ps3 version? really?

SuicidalTendencies5728d ago

Doesn't the publisher decide if there will be a charge for downloads? In this case it would be EA, not Microsoft.

hgdaniel5728d ago

Updates have to be approved and certified by Microsoft as they own the network it's going to be rolled out on.

SuicidalTendencies5728d ago

What does that have to do with charging for content? There are tons of free stuff on the marketplace. Somebody show me some proof that Microsoft demands developers or publishers to charge for DLC. People bring up the Gears maps as a example but that just proves my point that the publisher is responsible for the price. MS was the publisher for Gears.

Drekken5728d ago

Sentai, By now MS has no feet.

mfwahwah5727d ago

MS can tell any dev out there "You can not get permission to post this DLC unless there is a fee and we get a cut." Nintendo and Sony can do this too (*GASP*). You may not want to believe it, but it's not that far fetched. I remember Bungie complaining about Halo map packs costing money because of MS policy.

BRACHATTACK5728d ago

Surprise surprise, M$ trying to suck every bit of money from their poor xbots.

sentai5728d ago

Microsoft would be shooting themselves in the foot if they tried something like this. But then again, I'm not surprised.
