Why use an emulator? Just buy the console?

iplay1up22981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

My TV upscales to 4k ,so yes it can, and it looks fantastic!

wonderfulmonkeyman2981d ago

That's a piss-poor excuse.
We shouldn't be willing to pirate a game that is still in circulation.
It's wrong no matter how anyone tries to justify it.

R00bot2981d ago

PC costs 5 times more and can barely run the game at the moment, not even hitting 60fps. Also the resolution it's running at there is much lower than console resolution. 4k is some ways away.

Also piracy isn't cool.

Perjoss2981d ago

"That's a piss-poor excuse.

You're too fast to assume that people wanting to play this in 4k with an emulator don't already own the game and a WiiU.

Yi-Long2981d ago

@MonkeyMan: A WiiU emulator might be the only chance I'll ever get to play Xenoblade X with the original Japanese voices and English subs.

BVFTW2981d ago

If he has the game he's not pirating, it's his game, he can throw it like a frisbee is he like but I do think is a little soon for releasing an emulator 'cause not everybody is going to use it responsibly but we shouldn't be to quick to judge someone, I use emulation when I've the software but I'm guilty of playing retro games that were not released in my region and are not available commercially, like terranigma (what a great game).

Dasteru2981d ago

@wonderfulmonkeyman:

You clearly do not understand emulation. You do not need to pirate anything to use an emulator. Games can be played directly from the original disk.

Emulation is about visuals and performance, not piracy.

Th3o2981d ago

@GotHDGame

That comment about TV upscales is so wrong you don't even know the difference between a TV upscale (image stretching) and emulation (additional polygons)

P.S

This isn't about piracy, it's about proof of concept and trust me when this emulator is perfected you can run it on a very weak PC. It's not yet optimized.

Don't forget the Wii.U still runs powerPC, a very dated and little used architecture.

Also I hate the term "PCs are expensive" Don't forget how much more powerful they are meant for everything, not just gaming.

P.P.S

Don't assume it's always piracy, don't forget there are other factors, Backup purposes, region locks, graphics and convenience. Emulation will usually never be as good of an experience as the real thing because of the lack of peripherals and the fact that the architecture is emulated and not native.

mcstorm2981d ago

@Perjoss I agree with you. I'm all up for emulators for older consoles but not current gen. For me I always by games new as I think the developers should get the £ for the games rather than the shops ect.

Tell that to those who live in the third-world countries, they will be astounded by such an incredible revelation, I'll tell you that !!!

ONESHOTV22981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

how about buying the game and ripping it as an ISO file wouldn't that work as well why would i waste 200$ for 2 or 3 games if i can just buy the disc and play it on my pc.

Ck1x2981d ago

Nothing will read a WiiU disc, but a WiiU!
So good luck with anyone trying

ONESHOTV22981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

Ck1x if you say so what can an ISO burner not do. i didn't pay 1800$ for my rig for it to not come with a good dvd/blu ray burner

wonderfulmonkeyman2980d ago

If you're not willing to buy a system to play the newest games from the system creators, you should be skipping the games entirely.

Dasteru2980d ago

@Ck1x:

The WiiU uses standard Blu-ray disks. It is just the file format of the content on the disk that is not recognized by Windows natively. If the emulator is coded to understand the file format, then it will work.

It was the same with PS2 disks. Despite being standard DVDs, if you put the disk in a PC, it will just show a few kilobytes of index files without any actual game content. PCSX2 however can read and play them fine.

Philface2980d ago

Cause that is illegal. You harm the copyright laws there.

See, THIS is why I'm against emulators.
People try to advocate for their uses in terms of "backing up games they already own" and "playing games no longer on sale or not available in certain countries".

But moments like THIS, when it is made BLATANTLY OBVIOUS that they build these emulators for the expressed purpose of PIRATING GAMES, using PIRATED VERSIONS OF RETAIL GAMES AS PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL for said emulators, I cannot stand by the creators.

This isn't an emulator.
It's a pirating gate-way.

WE SHOULD NOT BE CELEBRATING THIS.
If people want to play games like Mario 3D World, THEY SHOULD BE BUYING THE SYSTEM, NOT PIRATING ITS GAMES.

This is WRONG, and SHAME ON ANYONE that supports it, after how obvious the creators have made their intentions for it.

iplay1up22981d ago

Emulated games on PC never feel quite the same. I feel the same way you do though. How are the gamepad required levels even going to work?

Perjoss2981d ago

Emulators usually have a ton of options so that you can bypass all that. For example games that require wiimote can be easily remapped to a controller.

ONESHOTV22981d ago

you would know how they feel better than the person that owns high end rig

kingjosh18762981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

Your comment reeks of disgusting ignorance. Enjoy paying extortionately high prices for 20-30 year old games on the Nintendo store then. Oh by the way, those digital copies will be tied to that system and won't transfer over when you buy another console. Maybe some of your favourite games won't even be available for purchase, guess that sucks since emulation is so 'immoral'.

Why do you say this game is pirated? I imagine it's much more likely the people working on this emulator actually own a copy of the game and ripped the game files onto the PC to get the emulator to work. Or they might even have gotten it to run straight from disc.

Kalebninja2981d ago

Okay so while he's ignorant, you're justifying stealing?

Ck1x2981d ago

The main problem with this emulator if you are aware of how it operates, is that it still needs a WiiU console in the first place to dump the game to the computer. So for all the people praising this emulator for not having to buy a WiiU in order to play WiiU games. The only other way to obtain this software is illegally!

Which is his whole point on why most people tend to give emulation a bad name. Something else people, understand that because you purchase a piece of software, it doesn't mean that you completely own it outright.

You are purchasing a licensed copy and you are agreeing to use the software in accordance with the law. Yes the software is yours to use, but if in anyway shape or form your usage causes the creator of that software financial harm by wrongful copying or distribution. They then have every right to sue for damages...

jcnba282981d ago

It's YOUR comment that reeks of disgusting ignorance.

If everyone pirated their games the industry would collapse and ZERO games would get made. Think before you comment next time.

kingjosh18762981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

@Kalebninja: I'm not justifying stealing. I'm calling him out for his crazy idea that emulation necessitates stealing.

@jcnba28: The industry seemed to be doing pretty well before a lot of the retro games started becoming available on the Wii virtual console (and later on other platforms) from 2006 onwards. Oh wait, I forgot that people emulating their SNES and Genesis games in the period prior to that caused the industry to crash and burn /S.

I play a lot of my old PS1 and PS2 games through emulation. These are games that I own, I also own the original systems. I have ripped the games directly from disc myself. Do I have to plug in the old console or re-buy the games digitally on a modern platform, to deserve the privilege of playing the games I own?

garrettbobbyferguson2980d ago

"Oh by those way, those digital copies will be tied to that system"

You mean, similar to Playstation Store and Xbox Store?

kingjosh18762980d ago

@garrettbobbyferguson: Yeah, just the same problem there. I used Nintendo as an example because they have a much larger legacy of older games available to purchase digitally.

iplay1up22980d ago

Games that are on the Nintendo store VC are cheap, Wii games are $19.99 I picked SMGalaxy2 and Metroid prime Trilogy up for $9.99 each, most VC games are less than $15, and you think that is "extortionately high priced" wow you are CHEAP! The Nintendo eShop has fantastic sales too.

No matter how you slice it, if Nintendo is not publishing a game on PC and someone else emulates said game, and releases it to others it IS PIRACY!

wonderfulmonkeyman2980d ago (Edited 2980d ago )

And yours reeks of disgusting piracy apologist syndrome, because you know damn well that this isn't about old games you can't find outside of emulation or anything of the sort.

It's about Wii U haters using their abnormally huge dislike of a good console to justify THEFT.

If there's a game out there that you want, and it's on a certain system and readily available to buy, YOU GO GET THE SYSTEM FOR THE GAMES.

If you don't want the system, THEN YOU AREN'T ENTITLED TO THE GAMES, especially through methods like piracy.
And you know damn well that the example above, Mario 3D World, is NOT one of those cases of a game that is so long-gone that you can only get it via emulation.

Playing games as new as these on anything other than their host system reeks of crooks mentality.

Dasteru2980d ago

@garrettbobbyferguson:

Games downloaded from PSN and XBL are tied to the users online account, not the hardware. PSN for example currently provides 3 licences per purchase (used to be 5) that can be assigned to a console just by signing into your PSN account on the new system and then downloading the game. If you use up the available licences and get another new system, you can go into the account settings and selectively deactivate any of the 3 licences, then reassign them to a new console.

Hoffmann2981d ago

What was your comment about the leak that Nintendo downloaded NES roms from piracy sites and basically sold you the same files via virtual console?

Germany72981d ago

I agree, this is piracy, also it's pathetic how this site is celebrating for stealing.
Sites like this are a disgrace for the industry.

Th3o2981d ago

You do know that CD copiers were the same situations? Digital distribution was mostly pirate only now it's a main way to get our movies.

Everything has it's goods and it's bad usages. This was created as a proof of concept and a way where users can play region locked games and backups.

Before you start defending companies let's not forget Nintendo was the one that decided to region lock their games, and if you check the stores a lot of their 3+ years old games are still 59.99$ + retail.

Not that I condone piracy, but I've seen many situations where users have pirated a game then decided to buy it on the console because they liked it that much more.

ONESHOTV22981d ago (Edited 2981d ago )

the guy that created the emulator don't give you a damn link to download the game so why blame them. just buy the game and burn it as an iso file that's all.

PhucSeeker2980d ago (Edited 2980d ago )

For the creators, it's fun reengineering other systems. The guys who do all this emulator should have a Wii U for sure. They bought games to rip. So really they can play the game legally if they want to. And they didn't exactly make much profits financially off of this.

For the users who really want to play Nin's games, if they haven't got a Wii U by now, its likely that they won't be buying one anytime soon because they are cheapskates.

Hoffmann2981d ago

The only wiiU games I cared about were Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros.

I don't want to buy a console for only 2 games.

But I will buy them probably next year, dump the games into .iso format and enjoy them via this emulator.

Nintendo still makes a bit money with two game sales. I don't need to spend hundreds of bucks for playing two games and don't have to make space for another console in the living room.

#IdealWorld

gamerb62981d ago

No ones asking you or forcing you to buy a console for two games. If you don't want to pay legally then go with out.

Your logic is stupid so if you only like a few songs on an music album then you should be allowed to steal the whole album because you only like a few songs? Riiiiight, yeah that makes perfect sense.

You stink of Nintendo hate, can't take anything you say seriously.

Hoffmann2981d ago

"You stink of Nintendo hate, can't take anything you say seriously."

Would have done the same with every other console that got only 2 games I care about.

Kalebninja2981d ago

So because you dont want a console you're okay with stealing? That's some great morality you have there.

Hoffmann2981d ago

As someone with probably 3000 bought games, including around 200 ones from Nintendo at home I really have no problem with "stealing" Nintendo the maybe 30-50 bucks they make with one wiiU.

Metallox2981d ago

Ok, I understand your point, but mind you that piracy is not "stealing" in the strict sense of the word.

ONESHOTV22981d ago

it's not stealing would you be a bit happier if we went out and bought it used would nintendo make any money out of that use game i bought no they would not.

Ck1x2981d ago

Once again you still need a WiiU console to dump the games so at that point, what is the point!
People really need to learn to read up on how things works before they just blindly throw their support behind something just to get agrees.

Hoffmann2981d ago

Ewww. Hope there will be a way to dump games without that console.

If they do make a sequel, they should incorporate Bowser’s Fury’s game design into the mix. Think Bowser’s Fury’s overworld where you can find warp points to linear levels like Mario 3D World.

Forget Odyssey 2 - It's Time For Super Mario 3D World 2

It's time for Nintendo to give the Super Mario 3D World formula another chance with a new game built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch.

richardmmorales670d ago

Rather have a new Super Mario RPG.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is my favorite Mario. I'd event take a remaster/remake.

Babadook7669d ago

My favourite Mario’s are Mario 64 and SM World SNES. Neither Odyssey nor 3D World were great imo.
