Running ps4 games on cinematic mode is not the same as a pure vr-specific designed game. Your just streaming off your HDTV to your headset, it won't be the same, unfortunately, but it's still great that psvr has more other uses outside of vr-gaming.

im a owner of Oculus dk2 and i watch movies with it. Virtual IMAX theater mode makes my 150 inch projector feel so tiny screen comapare to it. Im glad for PSVR that people can play any ps4 games with big IMAX movie theater screen.

That's because for 600$ you can only stream games to Oculus with the XB1.

With PSVR at 200$ less not only can you play every single PS4 game in Imax mode but you can also play real VR games.

Microsofts answer to PSVR has no effort behind it. At least Sony is taking VR seriously with all the support that they will give it.

Sounds like it. They mention "3 levels of zoom" so I would guess it is presented as a floating screen, rather than full theater or room. That might be the case for the One/Rift thing too, I dunno. Rendering a theatre would be a waste of resources to me anyway :)

I hope it just allows for just the movie screen to be displayed. I don't need the feeling of being in a theater, I'd rather just have everything that can be distracting tuned out so I can focus on the screen itself. Options wouldn't be bad though.

Well my Gaming TV is 65" and my Cinema room has a 100" screen but the bulbs are too expensive to game on the projector. So a 200" screen is better for me.

Yeah - Gear VR doesn't quite hit the spot for me for watching stuff.

PSVR, I would imagine, is going to have the best trade off. I say this because it has the lightest and most ergonomic form of any of these VR headsets, and for long stretches of gaming and viewing, it would be the most comfortable.

Quick question, does PSVR include the camera? If not that is a big mistake. The PSVR is already an accessory to the PS4 (no matter what Sony says). By not including the camera, Sony is essentially asking consumers to purchase an accessory on top of an accessory in order to make it work. The package needs to include everything that is needed for the VR experience except for the console. Otherwise it's just going to create further confusion and frustration among consumers who get PSVR at home and Realize they still don't have everything they need to make it work.

I agree that they should include the camera in the package. However, if they don't, it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't work out of the box.

For example, the GearVR doesn't need an external camera (meaning no head tracking) to work. I assume that basic stuff like cinema mode will work without the camera, but fully fledged VR games will require the camera.

But yeah, I really hope they include the camera in the final package.

Oh come on. You know very well most people are not going to be buying this primarily for the Cinematic mode. That is an added bonus feature to PSVR, not the primary function that most people are buying it for. The camera should absolutely come packed in. It's silly for Sony to ask consumers to purchase a separate accessory and then ask them to purchase an additional accessory before the first accessory can work properly. That's just asinine.

Thank god they didn't include the camera and move remotes in the base package, I already have 2 move remote sets (from PS3) and the PS4 camera (from launch) this would just be pure wasted money for me. They are going to release a bundle with those in it but I'd rather pay $399 for the headset than $499 for the bundle. I can't imagine I'm alone in owning those things.

Fairly sure considering Shu has confirmed there'd be bundles with everything needed that no one will go home w/o quality VR experiences...not sure why that's a sticking point 8 months from release....let them roll it out a bit more. At this point anyone who knows that VR actually exists would also know well enough to search online for what they may need for an optimal experience.

Consumers aren't the uninformed idiots they once were, and those that still are will have gamestop employees around to tell them what they need. I'm sure you can still move your head around as if you're actually in a theater rather than having the video stuck in the middle of the screen. These features are already on existing VR platforms and they allow this. You can even change which seat you're viewing whatever you're watching from and look around in the theater. Not much to look at other than empty seats, but still.

Yeah, but it's $200 cheaper than Microsoft's option, and that won't get you VR games on Xbone. The Rift announcement of cinema mode for Xbone is more of a bonus for primary PC gamers who happen to have an Xbone than it is incentive for Xbone-only owners to buy the Rift.

Having a gaming PC and having it hooked up to a HDTV and Monitor, I know running many displays bogs down the GPU, you need some headroom to run games using many displays, ie running a game on PSVR would cause the game to run a bit differently considering, but the extra processing unit is likely in PSVR to offset just that.

I mean....this isn't the first piece of hardware that Sony has ever made.

Unless you got a link saying the games will run worse in PSVR and that the extra CPUs in PSVR won't support all games, I don't know what your talking about.

The PSVR will operate at a constant 120hz refresh rate, a system level standard that is quite a bit higher than the 90hz offered by the Rift and Vive. This refresh rate is powering a 5.7″ OLED screen operating at 1920×1080.

People forget sony was testing (optics/displays) and putting to market headmounted tech years before.

Confirmed movies playable. Later it'll mean Bluray compatible as well. Which will in turn mean porn and virtual reality movies. This is huge. Might be good for me. Despite having a really decent sized and quality TV, my eyes aren't the best, so seeing some details and text on the screen can be problematic for me at normal viewing distances. In MGSV I often had to squint or lean forward to get a better look at some text.

OTOH, I have used HMD displays for gaming before(non VR types) and in some games it doesn't work as well...like games which have one's avatar take up a significant portion of the center of the screen. I'd imagine going forward, if developers could have a separate camera focal length for what is displayed for VR HMD output it could be worthwhile, as it would allow the player to be immersed more in the world...although that may be too much to hope for until someone actually recognizes this issue and addresses it.

On the plus side though, it did allow you to see a lot of the detail which can easily be washed out through a standard display, since it is right in your face.

I've been focused on the price and release date, and I read this just now.

This is quite honestly, a dream come true! Netflix on Gear VR is cool, but not quite the clarity I would have hoped to watch film content on for long periods of time.

PSVR will be my go to virtual cinema for games, TV and movies.

Even if some games we want to experience in VR don't become, we can still play them with the illusion that we're in a huge cinema sized room. No Man's Sky, Mirror's Edge Catalyst. It's gonna be so, so, SOOOOOOO good. Imagining how it will look to play Uncharted 4 on the big screen! =D

Might be cool for some 3D movies, but honestly a lower resolution than my TV and making it so my wife can't watch with me is not something I'm looking for. Besides, I already have an 80" 4k TV, this is a major step down.

I guess if you don't have a TV, this is a decent alternative and allows people if lesser wealth have a giant screen in their room.

I'm not fond of this method of playing games, but I guess there are a few people who might have a use for it...

Honestly what needs to happen is devs need to make a patch that changes first person games controls. Have it so camera movement is done by moving your head around instead of an analog stick, and you've got it set.
