F.E.A.R. Review

F.E.A.R., or First Encounter Assault Recon, sought to innovate the FPS and horror genres. To do so, they developed a nifty artificial intelligence (AI) for NPCs, which allowed for reasonably intelligent enemies and intense encounters. In addition, Monolith Productions – the developer of F.E.A.R. – created cleverly scripted terror in the shape of a small child named Alma. During its initial release in 2005, F.E.A.R. was well received and enjoyed by most critics; but how does it hold up today?

what is this? 10 years ago?

Yui_Suzumiya2972d ago

Actually it came to PC initially in 2005 so 11 years.

Fist4achin2972d ago

This was a fun game. It was the first I played on my 360. Nice creepy atmosphere at the time.

Yui_Suzumiya2972d ago

It was the second I played on my PS3 after Metal Gear Solid 4.

Yui_Suzumiya2972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

I'd love if they Remastered the F.E.A.R. Trilogy for current gen. I can't get enough of F.E.A.R.

BattleAxe2972d ago

Yeah, but leave FEAR 3 out, because it was garbage.

gamertk4212972d ago

Most underrated MP last gen.

Such enjoyable gunfights, pretty realistic flow to them at higher difficulties. Great AI programming, watched a presentation on it and it's really interesting stuff. They are coded so their primary objective is to minimize threat to themselves and killing you comes at second place. Compare that to games today where you got retards popping out of cover at regular intervals or just beeline towards you like moths to a flame.

Bioshock 1 only has the intro though, would you kindly pick up that radio? :p

Original FEAR is a goddamn masterpiece

ModsDoBetter363d ago

Was playing Alien: Isolation again a few weeks ago, still holds up and the AI is incredible.

F.E.A.R. was another amazing game, shame the series went downhill with 2 and then fell off entirely with F3AR.

Couldn’t get into Fatal Frame, bought the remaster on PS5 and just…couldn’t.

DeathTouch363d ago

Fatal Frame 2 is an underrated masterpiece.

gold_drake363d ago

omg that game freaked me out haha

Abnor_Mal362d ago

One of my favorite games, would love to see a remake.

gold_drake363d ago

i still think Haunting Ground is one of the best.

F.E.A.R. And Its Two Expansion Packs Go On Sale For $1.19

You can buy F.E.A.R. and its two expansions for just $1.19 on Fanatical right now, which is an 88% discount compared to its original price.

MadLad424d ago

Easily one of the best shooters ever made. If, for some reason, you're a PC gamer and haven't played it yet, this is a steal.

cthulhucultist423d ago

So true! I finished all 3 and fear extraction point few months ago on steam deck and I had a blast (always wanted to play these games).

Regretfully Perseus Mandate does not load (bought all 5 at discounted price bundle).

The graphics havent aged well (especially in the first 2 and extraction point) but the gameplay is very good and the enemy A.I is impressive for its time.

Horror segments were at times very atmospheric. The story was rather weak at points though.

Wish they remake these at some point

FinalFantasyFanatic423d ago

The A.I really is impressive, you can also get texture pack mods for the games too which help iwth the dated graphics.

EvertonFC423d ago

"Soldier of fortune" was also a great game.

cthulhucultist422d ago

true. It even got a Dreamcast port

Kados423d ago

98% discount over the odd pricing on Steam.

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya462d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled462d ago (Edited 462d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney462d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled462d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist461d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin462d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled462d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE462d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi462d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE462d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
