Ratchet & Clank on PS4 might be the best-looking game I’ve ever played - The Verge

The Verge "The new Ratchet & Clank on PS4 is technically billed as a reimagining of the original, a modern update to a nearly 15-year-old game. But based on the few hours I’ve spent with a preview version."

It really does look absolutely gorgeous. Can't wait to play it next month

piroh2986d ago

RaC and Alienation, next month will be great. Im glad they pushed U4. Yet I still have some work to do in PvZ GW2

wellard2986d ago

For real?? I completely forgot about alienation, I guess I can kiss my social life goodbye next month then. I wonder if it's enough to help me kick my resogun habit though.

Lastlivingsoul2986d ago

Also totally okay with Uncharted slipping back. R&C and Alienation are must plays...but Dark Souls 3 and Salt and Sanctuary will probably still be my top priorities for April.

tuglu_pati2986d ago (Edited 2986d ago )

This game will review really bad, too many weapons choices ;P

MrSec842986d ago

I think Shadow of The Beast is slated for May 17th 2016 now too, so Ratchet and Alienation next month, Uncharted 4 and Shadow of The Beast May.

Phenomenal months.
All of these games look gorgeous and like they're going to be a hell of a lot of fun to play.

jb2272986d ago

Is Shadow of the Beast still on track for this month? That one is looking pretty fun too. Love a good hack n slasher.

Kingthrash3602986d ago

R&C is the best looking game (of this art style) I've ever seen. It's a dam Pixar movie. A barsetter for games like it.
.....dear god imagine jak and daxter

freshslicepizza2986d ago

looks awesome, i love the ratchet series.

bouzebbal2985d ago

Tools of Destruction blew my mind on PS3, Crack in Time slaped me in the face that game was literally looking like a pixar movie.
I am very hyped for this episode.. I just love this series.

Mehmeh2985d ago

R&C :D

Had a blast with those games on PS2-3

Wow! thats near pixar movie quality graphics:O

OB1Biker2985d ago

Game + movie is a winner. Both really exciting. Also proving once more that graphics shouldn't be downplayed and have its part to enhance amazing gameplay.

Doesnt hold a candle to battlefront

Kingthrash3602986d ago

Not the same candle guy ...but I bet this candle comes with more content :).
Also seeing that they didn't use photos of real environments, but just pure imagination, is far, far more an impressive feat.
BATTLEFRONT is a beautiful game I take my hat off to it...but the fact that you stooped to compare this totally different game (on all levels at that) shows just how impressed YOU are with R&C

nitus102985d ago

Is Battlefront a new R&C game? /s

UltraNova2985d ago

Battlefront doesn't hold a candle to Driveclub.

See what I did there?

Goldby2985d ago

if we are comparing games to candles, Battlefront is just the wick, and each month you get a little bit of wax, hoping one day to have a full complete candle, R&C on the other hand. that's a candle holding a candle that fires candles up your ars...enal

R&C is the first game that actually looks eerily close to a Pixar movie. I literally thought cutscenes from the game were the R&C movie.

Ppl are stupid to ignore this game. The Pixalater is phenomenal.

Inzo2985d ago

It also looks eerily close to a Dreamworks movie. ;)

nitus102985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

Reading the article and even looking at the video of the game-play it sort of looks very similar to the first R&C game however it is not a remaster and in other respects it actually looks like a brand new game as well.

I guess I will have to get my original game out and play it again.
....

Just had an hour play of the original (PS2) R&C game and you really can notice the difference in graphics and game-play. The PS2 version appeared to be not as responsive if I compared it to Tools of Destruction (720p) and the video.

I do think that this will be a must get game for me as well although I will probably not get it mediately since I do have other games I am playing and don't want to get sidetracked.

For those who have never played a R&C game before and like action/adventure with over the top weapons (BFG anyone?) this is one game that is worth getting.

This is what happens when you focus on Art Style > Realism.

It's why tons of Nintendo games are awesome to look at but " not realistic".

I wish more developers would do this with their games.

It's like they are afraid of colors.

Aloy-Boyfriend2986d ago (Edited 2986d ago )

This is really a misconception. Art style isn't cartoony graphics. Art style can be realism, cartoony, or whatever. There are different styles to it.

Killzone SF and Infamous SS had tons of colors. They looked eye candy and their art style are realistic

Goldby2985d ago

ND with Last of us has a very distinct art style over Uncharted. art styles aren't just cartoonish like @XiKurapikaKurta (huff and puff thats a long name) the art style is just the medium you are using to portray your message.

Uncharted tends to show more colors with the foliage, where as Last of Us is very grounded with even color tones to create a sense of being out of comfort zones, at least for me it did

showtimefolks2986d ago

Day one buy amd only 39.99

Kind of glad uncharted 4 got delayed so now ratchet and clank will get some much needed limelight

BullyMangler2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

but it looks like another college project, too.

basic good looking art fLow, though

IamTylerDurden12985d ago

deafdani2985d ago

Oh shut up, you troll. If this were a Nintendo game, you'd be hailing it as the second coming of Christ.

BullyMangler2985d ago

the art direction of an average joe, in 1080p 60fps. looking good

showtimefolks2984d ago

bullymangLer

i know you are trolling but atleast know the history man. Ratchet and clank is one of the best IP's under sony and has loyal fanbase

this is kind of a reboot and it looks stunning. possibly like a PIXAR movie

a game like this wouldn't succeed on xbox one. look at sunset overdrive. IF sunset overdrive was on ps4 it would have easily sold 3 plus million. xbox gamers don't support different types of games and keep buying the same sort of games

Pongwater2979d ago (Edited 2979d ago )

realitymangler

OT - This game does indeed look amazing, and if the past R&C games are anything to go by (and of course if you like that sort of game) this game is a must buy.

Count me among those who aren't too upset about UC4 being pushed back a bit, and this game is a big reason why, along with Dark Souls 3 and Alienation.

XtraTrstrL2986d ago

Man, how come Naughty Dog doesn't just give in to the fans and bring back Jak and Daxter? If this game does good, they should learn from Insomniac and just do it. Their reasoning was so stupid to me, about going for realistic games now. There's no reason you can't do both. It's not too kiddy, and the last one was a cool openworld RPG style that was really fun. Stop playing around Naughty Dog.

NotanotherReboot2986d ago

Agreed. I'd much rather them go back to Jak than a Last of Us 2

TwoForce2986d ago

Even if they did, Jak and Daxter would be look way too realistic. ND did showed their concept art of Jak and Daxter remake and they looked very realistic. I'm ok with realistic look of Jak and Daxter, but i do feel that could hurt the fan. The only way Sony bring back Jak and Daxter, it has to be different developer.

XtraTrstrL2986d ago

@TwoForce,

I don't think it would hurt if it was a great game. It would still look cartoony in animation and style too, there's no way around it, it's part of it's DNA. Whether it was cell-shaded or more realistic CG, it would be cartoony style animation and the story and world would still be Jak and Daxter. I don't think there's any fans that would be against it coming back because of the art style used, knowing that Naughty Dog is behind the wheel.

UltraNova2985d ago

They have two teams, one's working on TLoU 2 and the other on Uncharted, after that some will stick to supporting Uncharted and the rest will start work on a brand new IP, I presume.

They would have to form a 3rd team to make Jak & Daxter, and I don't see them going that way, as it will probably stretch their talent pool too thin, in my opinion.

I believe Sony should assign Jak and or Crash(if it ever happens) to other 1st party studios like Media Molecule(the have quirkiness and creativity in spades to more than do those IPs justice).

ND should stay on the path they laid with Uncharted and TLoU, which is a more mature/serious tone, since they have proved to be masters of cinematic story telling and gameplay.

I can only imagine what they'd come up with next.

ninsigma2986d ago

I'd love a new jak and daxter! But the people who worked on those games have left the company. It's not the same naughty dog as back when crash and jak was made. The new guys tried doing it like below. https://www.google.ie/searc...

Aloy-Boyfriend2986d ago

Lol that's awful. I'm glad this morphed into TLoU and turned out to be a masterpiece

ninsigma2986d ago

Yeah I wasn't a fan of the new direction myself xD
And yup, can't really complain with what the alternative was! It's that realm that the naughty dog of today excels at.

buttcheeks2986d ago

Because they don't want to make it I love jak and daxter but if they don't have the passion for the series anymore I respect that they shouldn't just make games just to put them out they should make them because that's what they want to create

XtraTrstrL2986d ago

Yeah, it still sucks though. It has such a following, and so much potential.

Kaneki-Ken2986d ago

Remember this NaughtyDog is not the same team as before as back then. Majority of original developers back in Uncharted 1 days left so you can't blame NaughtyDog. But NaughtyDog could make a sister studio for games like Jak and Daxter, Guerilla Games and their sister studio is Cambridge Studio.

G20WLY2986d ago

*ahem* BOTH *drops mic*

Phunkydiabetic12986d ago

Or I dunno, how about something new maybe? Instead of retreading on games released well over a decade ago?

garrettbobbyferguson2986d ago

Neither Naughty Dog nor the vocal minority on this website want Jak and Daxter. They want more Uncharted and more TLOU because they're too "mature" for those game series. I'd rather have Insomniac work on it than Naughty Dog. At least they would give the series the attention it deserves.

Aloy-Boyfriend2986d ago

I'd say the minority is the one that can't let Jak and Daxter go, while the majority are focused on their most recent games.

I am going to go out on a limb and say the Ratchet and Clank series is probably the best series of games that Sony has....yes...over God of War and Uncharted.

My opinion of course....but still. lol

ninsigma2986d ago

I preferred jak and daxter myself. Preferred the gameplay and characters. Love ratchet and clank as well though I never got to beat the final planet because my save got corrupted >:(

IamTylerDurden12986d ago

R&C 1, 2, 3, CiT, ToD were all phenomenal games. Even Nexus was fun.

I think the new R&C looks like it could be even better than Tools of Destruction. Insomniac said it's a full R&C game and much longer than Nexus. I can't wait.

WelkinCole2986d ago

I actually like Sly better than Jak, RC and Crash.

Why would it be its obvi on AMD drivers

Maybe you are not up to date on the current state of AMD's Raytracing support and FSR.

Please tell me were you got never sony from in my comment?

ModsDoBetter290d ago

"Please tell me were you got never sony from in my comment?"

This is a first party title.
Released and poorly optimised. You jump straight to AMD being completely at fault as if TLoU PC port didn't happen.

Christopher290d ago (Edited 290d ago )

AMD themself said it was a driver issue.

generic-user-name290d ago

You should probably make sure it is Sony before trying to fling mud.

ModsDoBetter290d ago

@Generic with the cope:

From DigitalFoundry,

"The comparison, which was shared by Digital Foundry, was accompanied by a written analysis that goes over some of the port's best features, such as good scalability, which allows players with the proper hardware to enjoy much better visuals than on PlayStation 5 and those with underpowered machines to have still a decent experience barring some stuttering, and issues, such as missing transparency effects at max settings, texture loading issues, shadows issues with ray tracing enabled, stability issues and more. With the additional disabling of ray tracing on AMD GPUs due to stability issues, it feels like this is yet another port that was launched in an unpolished state and that will require multiple patches to be in a truly acceptable one."

"it feels like this is yet another port that was launched in an unpolished state and that will require multiple patches to be in a truly acceptable one."

This is not solely an issue with AMD, the port is "yet another" with missing features.

AMD has always been crap compared to Nvidia. The only advantage they have is price.

DarXyde290d ago

And power efficiency. And arguably better performance on 1080p/1440p cards. And availability.

Nvidia cards really aren't worth hunting high and low for when there are very comparable AMD cards that are cheaper. I really have to give credit to AMD for their very frequent and consistent grind with RDNA. This issue I reckon is a developer level problem.

Can't really miss with either, but considering Jensen and Lisa are relatives, they probably laugh about these debates over a very expensive holiday dinner.

iAmyRose290d ago

Naw AMD have had instances of being good, Nvidia do have better features, raytracing and AI performance if you play with software that uses it though.

KeeseToast290d ago

@DarXyde
Power efficiency is not true at all this gpu generation. Nvidia‘s 4000 series is more power efficient that AMD 7000

DivineHand125290d ago

I believe AMD offers higher vram at lower price points compared to NVidia. We have found out that this generation needs at least 8GB to load the highest detail textures at 1080p.

This issue with the drivers will eventually be fixed for Ratchet and Clank, however, the vram issue NVidia has on their midrange and entry level cards can only be fixed by spending more money on a higher end card.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 290d ago
CantThinkOfAUsername290d ago

AMD has already confirmed it's a driver-related issue on their cards. Besides, AMD 'users' can't stop telling us how not important Ray Tracing is, how they always play with it off, and how it's an 'Nvidia gimmick.' This shouldn't be a problem for them I believe.

On a side note, kudos to Nixxes and Sony for releasing one of the best PC ports in 2023. Amazing graphics with Ray Tracing, great performance, detailed system requirements, plenty of graphics options, all upscaling technologies (DLSS, FSR, and XeSS), DirectStorage 1.2, and native Mouse and Keyboard support.

INMATEofARKHAM290d ago

Not surprised by an AMD driver issue... I love they are in the market and help keep Intel honest but I've had some whacked driver issues with then so I always just go with Intel anymore.

I'm sure they'll have it fixed in the coming days, if it even takes that long, just one of the joys of PC gaming.

ChasterMies290d ago

Imma just sayin’, this is why I play on consoles.

Good-Smurf290d ago

No issues at all on PS5 and some already called me being trolling yesterday.
No telling how well it will run on my PC because there's too things that can go wrong there being High End Nvidia stuff and everything.

MadLad290d ago

Consoles are highly limiting; and when devs screw up optimizing their games on console, you're screwed. You don't have the option of powering through it.

Binarycode290d ago

That's why always wait and see what the game plays like on any device before you buy.

I think they've done a good job porting it to pc, but it needs to be able to run on lower end cards and should have a ram indicator to show how much video ram is being used.

ChasterMies289d ago

That’s why I play on PS5. The user base is so big, devs can’t afford to screw up optimizing their games for it.

MrVux000289d ago

Looking at the overall state of PC gaming and its ports of AAA games for the past 3-4 years vs consoles ports.

Not really helping your case.

1nsomniac290d ago

People never listened when I said that this game doesn’t use “real” ray tracing on PS5. I believe it uses a very clever advanced/modified screen space reflection system. Which is why the real ray tracing doesn’t work on pc.

Outside_ofthe_Box290d ago

Does it matter? I thought we were past this "real" nonsense. The end results matter more. If you can't distinguish, who cares. If it allows for better/more stable frame rate who cares. MS f'd everything when they started using terms like "true" and "real" in their marketing when they launched the One X last gen. People are finally starting to realize that "True 4K" doesn't matter if you have to sacrifice framerate to achieve it. In the end something always has to give if you are truly pushing the hardware.

Binarycode290d ago

Raytracing reflections are used on PS5 as they are in Spiderman, Same engine. tested by professionals with first hand knowledge.

PC Ray-tracings problems are bugs and on AMD side a driver issue.

Lastly if AMD want to compete in the RT space, they need to come up with a solution. As in a unique chip to do it, not just make the gpu with some driver things help it. It's miles behind Nvidia.
