If you can get beyond the squishy controls, Cobalt is a surprisingly deep and charming action platformer
The Xbox One may not have had the most exclusives this year, but it had a some good ones.
Thats Not an exclusive game....none of them let call theme console exclusives for the sake of accuracy. Also KI is a 2013 game not 2016....so tired of the truth bending.
DLC isn't a game it's just content
Exclusive means only on a console and no where else.
Edit let me correct myself u was at work when I wrote this comment...
Exclusive means it's only on the thing that's on subject...and no where else. Darth you know this.... exclusives are exclusives multiplat are muliplat. ..every game on that list is multiplat.
Darth you were so deep in the meaning of exclusives you commented this:
http://n4g.com/comments/red...
Well Microsoft has liked to play with that word a lot in recent years. These are console or platform exclusives, because Xbox One doesn't have much in the way of true exclusives anymore.
@thrash, "Exclusive means only on a console and no where else."... exclusive does not mean that and you know it. Quit trying to bend the meaning of things to your liking.
@thrash, thanks for pointing out the obvious. That is very much a possibility because the base unit would be lacking the ability to have the enhanced features and content that is available on the neo. My comment is correct in the use of "exclusive" yours however is not. you can't magically make something appear on a lesser model if it lacks the ability to display it ergo it would be exclusive to the more powerful unit.
A game that is being released to a family of systems can be both multiplat AND exclusive. Again, the right use of the word. yours... still is not. A game made for the PS3, PS Vita and PS4 is both multiplat as well as exclusive to Sony just as a game made for W10 and Xbox can be both multiplat as well as exclusive to MS.
Get over it dude, you lost. Now change the record.
I'm so mad that I bought these Xbox One games not knowing they wouldn't work on my console because they are also on Windows 10
Sarcasm
Wow thats a pretty sad list. Especially since they took a game from last year as their #1
So does that mean that any game thats on console/pc cannot be called an exclusive anymore regardless of which console it is and therefore people shouldn't include them in lists ..... @BlackTar no i'm talking about all games past or future
Don't forget each of the MASSIVE 8 character "Seasons" of this game were 40 quid each. So what, you have to spend over 100 quid since this game came out to finally get a character count over 20?
Yeah, 2 and a half years later and I'm still saying they should have just released a REAL Killer Instinct game for the fans after 20 years of nothing. A team experienced in fighting games and basic understanding of human like animations would have been nice too.
@ Kingthrash360
"That's Not an exclusive game....none of them let call theme console exclusives"
Well you're not playing any of them anyway, right? Most of the PlayStation folk on here more than likely don't have gaming PCs, so whether a game is console exclusive or not is really besides the point. Just for the sake of accuracy, let's start to call these exclusives what they really are....Microsoft exclusives! Or we can also call them "Games that PlayStation Owners can't Play on their PlayStation Consoles".
It's also important to point out, that most of PlayStation's so-called exclusives are also on PC. Of course I'm referring to almost all of the "console exclusive" indie games that are also on Steam, including No Man's Sky, and other PS4 console exclusives like Street Fighter 5, Umbrella Corps, Valkyria Chronicles Remaster, Death Stranding, Shenmue 3 and the Final Fantasy 7 remake. I could also list a crap-ton of Japanese games which nobody's ever heard of, that are also "console exclusive". PlayStation isn't too much different from Microsoft after all!
They are still Microsoft exclusives. Still exclusive to Windows 10 and Xbox consoles.
"Exclusive" does not, as some misinformed people believe, mean that something is "available on only one platform". That is a misunderstanding or a deliberate distortion of the meaning of the word.
The word "exclusive" simply defines and delineates a limitation of availability. An exclusive club, for example, does not refer to a club that only one person has access to, it simply means it is not open to everyone. (In that particular example it also carries the connotation of being expensive).
In essence the word helps us describe what is included and what is excluded. It should be noted that "exclusive" is an adjective which is related to the verb "to exclude".
Dictionary.com gives the following three principle definitions:
"adjective
1.
not admitting of something else; incompatible:
2.
omitting from consideration or account
3.
limited to the object or objects designated"
Notice it does not say 'limited to only one object', it says "limited to the object or OBJECTS designated". So, when someone says that a game is "exclusive to Windows 10 and Xbox consoles" they are in fact using the word correctly. It means that the game is only available on Windows 10 and Xbox and excludes all other platforms not listed.
So, yes, Xbox consoles still have exclusives where it matters. These games are fully exclusive within the console space. You can't play them on any other console.
@Kingthrash360
Oh, one more thing. The words "multiplatform" and "exclusive" are not opposites as you seem to think. A game can be both multiplatform (to certain platforms) and exclusive (to certain platforms).
The word "multiplatform" does not mean that a game is available on all platforms. And the word "exclusive" does not mean that a game is only available on one platform.
I'll give a few examples.
A game may be available on the PS3, PS4 and Vita and rightly be called "multiplatform", since it is available on more than one platform. But it can also correctly be referred to as a "Sony exclusive", since it is only found on Sony platforms.
Another game might be found on Windows, Mac and Linux and therefor be referred to as a "multiplatform" game, but it would still be correct to refer to it as a "PC exclusive" since it is only found on personal computers and not on consoles.
Similarly, a game may only be available on Windows 10 and Xbox and we could call it "multiplatform", but at the same time we could correctly refer to it as a "Microsoft exclusive" or "exclusive to Windows 10 and Xbox".
So, you're completely wrong. The words "exclusive" and "multiplatform" are not mutually exclusive. A game can be be both exclusive and multiplatform at the same time. Please quit bastardizing the English language to suit your fanboy agenda.
It's funny how people simply can't except things for what they are.
article doesn't say Microsoft exclusive. ...says xbox.
MS don't even call the games exclusive anymore.
They say : " Available on Windows 10 and Xbox One"
Sorry thrash but i seem to recall seeing a few games that had the statement "Windows 10 and Xbox One Exclusive" at E3. Were you not paying attention? Oh that's right, you don't see the things that others see. You see what you want to see.
Like how if it says Xbox it somehow is not the same as Microsoft even though they could be interchangeable like Playstation is with Sony.
take out halo 5 and put in either halo mcc or gears ultimate edition. That would be my top 3. Halo 5 just really disappointed for me.
Quantum Break is awesome and the content updates to KI and Halo 5 have been too
The rest of the year is stacked with Gears 4, Dead Rising 4, Forza Horizon 3, and Recore
And Ori is a 2015 game, KI is just a new season...
So only 3 console exclusives this year so far?
It's so good it transcends years xD
Are they talking about the definitive edition perhaps??
@ninsigma
They are, but it still originally came out in 2015. If they release "Ori: the almost final edition" in 2017 do they count it again?
Well, to be fair, I saw lots of people putting The Last of Us Remastered on exclusives lists, even though it's essentially the same game as the original that released previously on PS3.
@starchild
Fair enough, but at least a remaster means that the game wasn't available on that platform before, while Ori's definitive edition is more like a GOTY with some more content...
Thought so. Yeah I agree it is a 2015 game. It's not like it's a remake or anything so including it is a bit silly.
Guess we should call all season passes 'new' games and pad list from now on. New seasons of MOBA with new characters and maps in Paragon, Smite, Battleborn and Overwatch will be considered 'new' games. Love Overwatch and Smite, look forward to the 'new' game and experience.
I still have 2014 and 2015 games I'm trying to catch up on
I played a few hours of QB and it's pretty good, I enjoyed the live action cutscenes.
I have such a deep backlog it's ridiculous
None of those are technically exclusive and some of them didn't even come out this year....
All of them came out this year, although it's on technicalities mostly. The Xbox One hasn't had the strongest influx of games during the first half of 2016. :/
So what if a XB1 or PC fan say the same thing? I never played QB but I can tell just by looking at gameplay it's not that exciting and low sells prove that people wasn't into it.
Isn't Uncharted 4 a substitute for QuantumBreak?
They are both story driven cinematic TPSs.
The PC version is great?
So they fixed the problems with it already. That's good to hear.
Wow.
No wonder they had to toss out a new console to generate buzz. This is sad.
LOL! The creation of this list only damages the shallow 2016 line-up of the Xbone more and more..
KI was a 2013 game, this was simply dlc.
Ori was a re release, barely a remaster.
It's hard to say xbone even had more than a couple exclusives this yr. Sony slaughtered them in 2016 exclusives thus far. Uncharted, R&C, Firewatch, The Witness, Alienation, SFV, Salt n Sanctuary ect.
But, wait, most of those games you listed are on PC too, so doesn't that mean they are multiplats and NOT exclusives? Or does that only apply when you guys want to hate on Xbox?
I don't own an Xbox and I strongly prefer Playstation consoles, but my god, a lot of you are just so incredibly biased and hypocritical.
I do think those games you listed are exclusive to the PS4 in the console space and that is what matters. Consoles compete against consoles, they aren't in direct competition with the PC.
Only quantum break released this year and that's not even an exclusive none of them are actually exclusives
So basically the only reason for someone to get an XBOne who didnt already have it is Quantum Break and that did not perform as well as many hoped, myself included.
This is why you are not only losing MS, but losing so bad you feel the need to start a new gen so early. MS is set to change the console landscape and Im not convinced for the better, and all because they cant compete when on a level playing field, so they need to change the rules to a way that others cant compete. They want a monopoly where consoles and PCs are indistinguishable so they will always have that advantage over anyone else. This is the MS way.
Me, I hope they fail. Ive liked the way consoles are for the last 35 years. Everyone generally starts together more or less and you stand by your product for at least half a decade before worrying about the next gen. 3 gens with lip service support and short life spans from them now. How dumb are people? How is it going to be when everyone is upgrading every 2 years just to keep up?
If you want to improve your lot, try just releasing games all year instead of just in the holidays.
Been playing multiplatform games on the Xbox this year mostly. Not much in terms of top notch games until Forza Horizon 3.
Judging from this they were obviously hoping Quantum Break would be massive, which wasn't the case. They do tend to release one big thing early on, then a whole bunch of stuff at the end of the year.
Gears 4 looks solid, FH3 looks incredible, but I'm looking forward to Recore the most. It's good to see some top quality 3D platformers releasing with Recore and Ratchet and clank, we have had a shortage of them this gen.
DR4 looks the same as 3, so I'll pass on that.
Quantum Break is the heavy hitter. It's kind of a bad list if you are putting a heavy hitter on this list that scored worse than a bare bones SF4 game.
That's a pretty terrible top 5 if I've ever seen one, resembles 2015, maybe Microsoft hate the 1st 9 months of every year ever?
Cobalt isn't even a Microsoft exclusive (if people even use that term), it can be bought on Steam.
SUPERHOT isn't an exclusive, nor Microsoft exclusive, it's an overpriced web game at $20 on sale ffs.
Like other have said, Killer Instinct: Season 3 isn't a game, it's add-ons to a launch title.
Quantum Break is a game though, just isn't exclusive in the true sense of the word exclusive. "MS exclusive" it is!
Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edtion... Well damn, an updated year old MS indie game.
So let's get this right, ZERO 100% exclusives and... 1 is a 1-year-old remaster, 1 is add-on content for a launch title, 1 is web based game, 1 is on Steam and only 1 is AAA and not actually only on Xbox One. Jeez!
Indeed, SUPERHOT and Ori are also on Steam*. You either have to laugh or cry at this pitiful top 5 list. Hard to argue against that statement really, it's not Twinfinite fault either, MS need to produce content of their own instead of buying 3rd party deals.
I never noticed before but someones comment on another article said Microsoft mostly release the titles in the second half of the year, closer to holidays. Kinda not a good idea especially since the One came out. But it is sad that there isn't really a reason to own a One anymore if you have a good PC.
People. For the last time. It is not an xbox exclusive when you don't need an xbox to play them.
Exactly. If a game is on two platforms, it's not exclusive. It's not a matter of bragging rights or schoolyard console wars, it's a matter of FACT. You might as well call Undertale a "Steambox exclusive" at this rate.
But of course, the rebuttals are that "PS4 owners don't own PCs" or that "PS4 has SFV and No Man's Sky" or "it's on the MS store so it's Xbox exclusive." None of those paltry arguments change the meaning of the word "exclusive."
And again, those games are still exclusive in the console space, which for console gamers is all that matters. You can't play those games on Nintendo or Playstation consoles.
You console fanboys are always screaming "quit bringing PC into the discussion! Consoles only compete with consoles, they don't compete with PCs".
Let's be honest, if you want to ignore the console distinction and act like console gamers are just as likely to play a game on PC as on console then PC most definitely should be involved in all of those discussions. No more cop outs or excuses. I'm sick of console fanboys only wanting to include the PC when it serves to help you attack another console and then turning around and pushing the PC from the conversation when it makes your favorite console look bad. It's hypocritical and inconsistent.
I am not sure why you find it difficult to comprehend, I can play practically every single MS exclusive without an XB1, this is a fact.
On the other hand, outside of a few examples, Sony exclusives are exactly that, EXCLUSIVE! Want to play (off the top of my head) Bloodborne, Ratchet & Clank, Until Dawn, Disgaea 5, Drive Club, Infamous, MLB The Show or any number of other titles then you need to buy a PS4.
For the record, I do also own a PC. I bought an XB1 nearly two years ago following that fantastic MS E3 where a load of exclusives were announced. Since then MS removed any requirement for me to own that XB1, it now sits next to a PS4 in my sons room gathering dust. These aren't the tall tales of some fanboy, I assure you they are true, and I would guess, pretty typical of those not drinking the MS kool aid.
Again, it has nothing to do with fanboy bragging rights, it has to do with the use of the word "exclusive." Quantum Break isn't an XBO exclusive in just the same way that Grand Kingdom isn't a PS4 exclusive, since it's also on Vita.
It does not change the fact that you don't need an xbox console EXCLUSIVELY to play these games.
It is no different than saying that a game available on multiple PS consoles is a PS4 exclusive because you will not need a PS4 to play it. You can play it instead on PS3 or PS Vita.
Same way PS4 games that are also available on PC does not require a PS4 EXCLUSIVELY to play them. You can chose to play them on PC which means its not EXCLUSIVE on the PS4 or that PS4 is the only way you can play it.
Multi-platform means it is available on two or more platforms. These Xbox games are available on 2 platforms. It is not exclusive to one platform as such its not a XBOX exclusive nor a PC exclusive. In fact they are multi-platforms. This is a fact. You can write a wall about this but it will not change this simple fact.
"And again, those games are still exclusive in the console space"
Like a PC game that uses a Keyboard is "exclusive" to the PC space.
The issue is that isn't what is being asked.
Regardless of the platform, what is being asked is if the game can be played else where.
Yes.
Thus multiplatform
That is like saying a game is PS controller exclusive. I mean..you can't play it with a XB controller, thus PS controller exclusive lol Consider just how strange and silly this is. That isn't what any consumer cares about ,they want to know if they can play the game else where.
Not if its console, PC, controller type etc.
Irrelevant.
Is a console game suddenly no longer a game when its on PC? Are we now talking about something different? So how on earth can one say a game isn't multiplatform based on the platform its also on?
Sorry but just because a PC isn't a console, doesn't mean the game that its playing is suddenly not the same game.
Exclusive is the game can only be found on 1 platform
Multiplatform means it can be played on more then 1
(that is irrelevant to WHAT platform it actually is, it can be played else where, get over it)
" I'm sick of console fanboys only wanting to include the PC when it serves to help you attack another console "
Buddy, read my comments. I got downvoted for saying the exact same thing I'm saying now about a PS JRPG.
What I'm saying has nothing to do with fanboys bud. I game on both console and PC.
I'm getting Sea Of Theives on PC. I DON'T OWN A DAMN XONE!
So what am I playing? A different game? Do you not get that exclusive means its the only place and multiplatform means it can be played on 2 or more other platforms?
I'm planning to get it on ANOTHER platform that isn't XONE, thus...multiplatform.
I'm buying Persona 5 on PS4, it can be played on PS3, thus multiplatform.
I'm buying No Man Sky on PS4, it can be played on PC thus multiplatform.
Am I saying it to be "hypocritical" now bud? If you are going to say such things, list the user you are talking about and find their comment history and make a point about them.
Stop generalizing the situation to fit your narrative because you don't like MS making games on PC now. Sorry but when did multiplaform mean only on 2 consoles at least?
Exclusive- only on 1.
Multi platform- on more then 1.
Thats it. Please...stop the spinning. We don't need stupid sub-terms to make folks feel better about their situation regarding XONE and MS.
Was sad, is someone needs to even tell folks this smh.
Suddenly, exclusive now means, not on PS lol
Exclusive in regards to platform literally means, only found on 1.
Multiplatform...can be found on more then 1 platform.
If someone states if a game is exclusive with a response about who owns said game, its irrelevant. ie if I ask if Battlefield 4 is exclusive to XONE, it is a yes or a no.
Not..."EA owns it, so its EA exclusive" lol WHO is asking such a thing based on legal ownership? LMFAO!
Consumers merely want to know if its the only place. THATS IT.
Soooo folks, consider when someone ask if its exclusive to a platform, they likely mean...is it exclusive to a platform.
No one is asking who owns it in that respect, that is largely irrelevant. Spinning this whole "Win 10 eco system" BS is irrelevant to the point.
That is like saying Arkham Knight, Mass Effect 4, Witcher 3, Fallout 4 etc are all PC,PS,XB etc exclusive....
By that term, we might as well technically never have multiplatform games based on such stupid logic.
Fallout 4 isn't multiplatform folks, its not on the Sega CD, thus is exclusive.
Does someone REALLY mean this when they are asking such a question?
Gareth writes "I’ve found myself recently starting new games like an elderly gentleman in his late eighties, who can’t remember where his trousers are and why coffee is not food. The game experience in Cobalt is no different; where I confusedly find myself suddenly jumping in the air, punching, cracking safes and listening to space music all within the first ten minute of playing. I’m all for not holding your hands when starting a game and following a trail path etc… but please just a little push is all I ask of you. This though is Cobalt and it’s all about packing as many different punches as possible, with a heady mix of platforming, shooting, puzzles, slo-mo and gadgets. Catch up grandad."
