The 6 Most Disappointing Console Exclusives So Far For Both PS4 and Xbox One

I loved ryse, play it on legendary difficulty and hitting the correct QTE sequence can be the difference between life and death... literally.

UncleJerry2986d ago

I thought Ryse was pretty fun too. I mean as a launch title it could have been much worse and some people blew it out of proportion.

I agree with the writer on Halo 5 SP (MP is amazing, IMO), because it really did fail to deliver on what the pre-release media sold us. I wouldn't really call the SP a disappointment overall, just more so when compared to previous titles or when weighed against the hype,

Titanfall might have been lacking on longevity, but to call it disappointing would be going too far and it deff sparked a revolution in how we look at FPS games.

I won't comment on the other games listed since I really don't have enough time with them, but The Order was deff all looks from the time i've spent with it

sullynathan2986d ago

A game should not be carried by its QTEs, except if its one of those Quantum Dream shits

Flewid6382986d ago

Why only Quantic? God of War thrived on that shit.

thisgamer5032986d ago

I think he means games shouldn't be carried by QTEs if it's on XBOX. On playstation it's all good...

sullynathan2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

No I said quantic dream because all their games are pretty much QTE's, god of war has QTE for certain boss fights. Until dawn was clearly inspired by those quantic dream games.

Titanfall wasn't a disapointment. I had many hours of fun with it.

mark_parch2986d ago

ive probably put more hours into titanfall than any other game so far this gen. absolutly loved it and can't wait for titanfall 2

kickerz2986d ago

Same can't wait for Titanfall 2. All it needs is a good story mode and more weapons, gear, and customization of the player and Titan. Keep the excellent fastpaced gameplay, that was near perfection :)

MrsNesbitt2986d ago

Titanfall was great, such a refreshing shooter

joab7772986d ago

Driveclub? Maybe if you are still dwelling on its launch cuz its an entirely different game now. I agree w the rest, though SF5 is amazing in its gameplay etc and just like Driveclub, I'm fairly certain that in 3 months we will see a much better offering.

Flewid6382986d ago

SFV is insanely fun...but also insanely broken.

thisgamer5032986d ago

While it's good that they do finally get these games in a playable state, I'm still highly against releasing incomplete games. There are a lot of people still that like retro gaming. Imagine in 10-20 years if people want to play ps4/x1 games and psn or xbl services are no longer available, how are people supposed to get the complete games? If they buy a hard copy and there is no service to provide these giant updates then they are stuck with broken games.

C-H-E-F2986d ago (Edited 2986d ago )

I can't speak for the xbox games for I don't own an xbox, but The Order was a great game when you took it for what it was. It was more of a cinematic experience. Sure the 60$ was a bit pricey, but I looked at it as the price you have to pay for such an experience. I really liked the story as well reminded me of The Underworld movies.

As for Driveclub... REALLY?? This is the best racer out on the market now. And yes I own The Crew and Project Cars. Once again I can't speak for xbox games for I have not played them but on the ps4 Driveclub is no where near disappointing. lOl.

I saw someone say something regarding Killzone Shadowfall, Yes. This game was a "let down" in terms of features they dropped from the previous games, but I don't think any Killzone can or will top KZ2. Overall shadowfall was a great game for what it was.

I think you all have this messed up reality on what games are, and what they are meant to be. Yall need to step out of the box and look at it as the developer. Ask yourself,

What is this game?
What is the goal?
What is the vision for the game?
Does the gameplay match their vision?
Is the vision seamless with the experience?

etc.etc.

We are grown now, for the most part, it's time to play games with that mindset. I've played plenty of games I loved back in the day. and was amazed by how shi*y it is now. And no it's not because games play better and look better now, but its because then my expectations weren't so freaking high for what I was playing.

I recently started playing GTA3 on the PS4 and sheeeesh that game still brings back memories and it's still a solid experience to this day.

I say reality check your expectations, and stop reading so much into the game and creating a game that wasn't created for your imaginations sole purpose.

Picnic2986d ago (Edited 2986d ago )

More the difference than in Until Dawn, that's for sure, where it takes several badly done QTES to die (or be captured) in a QTE section. As such, your 'literally' makes sense as emphasis in the context of the character in Ryse.

UnHoly_One2986d ago

Agreed. It wasn't GOTY material or anything, but it was a fun game.

Spent a lot of time playing the multiplayer with a buddy.

otherZinc2986d ago (Edited 2986d ago )

Halo 5 has the best:
Lore
Story
Movies
Content
Hunt The Truth
Forge Mode
Multiplayer
FREE DLC Maps

All for $60.

So, biased media, stop the Halo 5 hate.

343 Industries has the best value of a console video game, in console video game history for a Brand New AAA Game!

KUV19772986d ago

I liked 3 of the games on the list.

Ryse was good, as was The Order. DriveClub is pretty awesome, just a Little to many time-based-Events.

Haven't played Halo yet but can hardly believe it to be so dissappointing.

I have to agree with Halo 5 single player!

Brohan2986d ago

I enjoyed the Single player myself.

ShadowKnight2986d ago (Edited 2986d ago )

The Multiplayer was the best thing about Halo 5

shabz6662986d ago

yep totally agree. super disappointing single player. multiplayer is amazing and in a league of its own but that single player is a stinker. it was chapter 3 i think. that walk and talk mission as a whole level. terrible.

i don't know if walk and talk mission from halo as a whole level or a cutscene from the order as a whole level, which one is worse.

ShadowKnight2986d ago (Edited 2986d ago )

Driveclub is a way different game now and SFV doesn't have all it's content yet lol

2986d ago Replies(5)
dillydadally2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

Honestly, if you look at the common thread between a lot of these games, it's that developers are releasing games without an acceptable amount of content or not in a finished state. For example, SFV, Drive Club, Titanfall, Halo 5 to a certain extent, etc. It's a new worrying trend we're seeing now. I don't know why they think it's worth it, seeing as how they still end up completing the content with patches, but by then they've already lost a lot of money and players.

Overload2986d ago

Driveclub shouldn't be on that list in my opinion. It had a terrible launch, but it is a fantastic game.

Elit3Nick2986d ago

As someone who used to hate on the game in the past, I can't help but marvel at how much it has improved since launch. I feel that Halo 5 is going the same way as well, since they're adding everything that people have been asking for.

jb2272986d ago

I haven't played it so I can't say for certain, but it seems from overall impressions that the only thing Halo 5 was lacking was a quality campaign & a local co op mode & from what I understand none of that is coming. They seem to be working to make the online mp better which is the main thing that was quality from the beginning.

Elit3Nick2986d ago

The multiplayer balance and feel is spot on, but there was a glaring lack of maps and game types at launch, now they've been adding some solid new maps and fan created ones as well as adding lots of missing game-types like social playlists, BTB, and recently Assault, Grifball and Fiesta. And then we have Firefight coming back, as well as Infection being confirmed as a future addition.

jb2272986d ago

@elite

That makes sense, the only one I had heard of was the traditional BTB not hitting launch but dropping soon after, and I've heard a lot of cool things have happened in Forge mode. It sounded to me like the mp for Halo was great at launch and pitch perfect by now, good on 343 for delivering on that stuff. Also cool that all maps are free going forward. I'm not sure how thin it may have been at launch, but I was kinda seeing a similar situation w/ SFV, that what was provided at launch was absolute quality, it just takes time to throw all of the other stuff out there I suppose. Gotta confess I'm an sp guy myself so I'm accustomed to getting my full experience at launch and not waiting but I understand it's very different for mp modes.

Firebird3602986d ago

@overload couldn't agree more, DC is my favorite racing game so far this gen. The support for that game is unmatched by any I can remember, constant stream of updates and free dlc.

metalgod882986d ago

I think initially, Driveclub had one of the worst releases in recent memory. The "Free" version was pushed back like a year and full version's complex online systems didn't work for a month following the release.

But since that time, they have bounced back greater than anything I've ever seen in the game industry in terms of upgrading through updates. They totally pulled a 180 and its one of the best simcade racing titles and one of the most gorgeous games ...maybe ever.

UltraNova2986d ago

A very good, all fact encompassing and truthful comment that got so many disagrees.

People never change.

Flare1492986d ago

I really hope they make additional improvements and release a second. Just as many have said it made sense the game was on the list originally, but now it's very good. Incidentally for those who stuck through it's almost like a cult hit now. Hopefully if they improve off what they have and make a second with a beta and stable launch it could really take off.

Replace DC with MCC and you got something going.

Dark_Crow2986d ago

No.
Not everyone bought mcc for the online.
You've got 5 full remastered games right there.

Aloy-Boyfriend2986d ago

No.
Not everyone bought DC for the online.
You've got a full campaign right there full with challenges

Mehmeh2986d ago

And because of that DC should be replaced with MCC on that list?

Dark_Crow2986d ago

@Xi
Don't be a fanboy.
Was only stating there was nothing wrong with the 4 and later 5 full campaign games in mcc.
I also didn't say driveclub should be in that list. Just disagree with it being switched with mcc as it makes no sense.

DigitalRaptor2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

That's weird.

There were a number of game-breaking bugs in the single player too. Enough to call it a disappointment when people who might have bought them for the joy of playing the remastered campaigns, only to have their save files corrupt or games bug out on them and throw them out of the experience.

As a package for either person looking forward to it (single or multi) it was a disappointment that retained its problems for many, many months. Yet it still got good reviews. It became better, but still is not the game it could have been had Microsoft not organised a jumbled mess, and threw it out the door to meet the holiday deadline.

I would argue that it should be swapped with DC, only because for a series with a status as golden as Halo, this was an embarrassing release for MS and insulting release for fans and consumers. Halo had further to fall than DC.

The Order: 1886 pushed visuals hard in 2015 - And still looks stunning today

Digital Foundry : Released in February 2015, The Order: 1886 was a stunning PlayStation 4 game at the cutting-edge of rendering technology, with visuals that still hold up today. The game's release pre-dated in-depth Digital Foundry coverage, something we're looking to address with this new video! Ready at Dawn's game never received a sequel and never received a PS4 Pro upgrade, but thanks to developments with exploited, older firmware PS5 consoles, we can now show you the game running locked at 60 frames per second.

The gameplay was bland and extremely frustrating at times with unnecessary QTE combat at points. But the world and the lore and the characters and the story were fantastic. I’ve always wanted a sequel. I still hope Sony will surprise us one day.

isarai268d ago

I still stand by my theory that this game just released at the wrong time. Almost every outlet spent a lot of time in their reviews ragging on the game for not being an online experience, everyone was in the Destiny hype train and at the time they wanted EVERY game to follow suit, bashing any game that didn't. If this were released after everyone realized how much that wasn't future, people would've appreciated it more. I loved it, and I'm always disappointed that we'll never get a sequel

Tacoboto268d ago

That doesn't seem to be true about outlets complaining on the lack of online. The review summaries on Metacritic are very consistent: Amazing graphics, but shallow gameplay and a very short length with little reason to return.

Here's an example of how *little* time IGN spent talking about multiplayer:

"With no multiplayer, and no reason to revisit the short and stunted single-player campaign once it’s been completed, there just isn’t a lot to it."

It's the final sentence. They don't even take the time to say "online multiplayer"

MrChow666267d ago (Edited 267d ago )

"Amazing graphics, but shallow gameplay and a very short length with little reason to return."
You are right, that's what everbody was saying at the time, never heard anything about it not being online.
I've been thinking about trying this game for years, I may get it now that it's dirt cheap, no big loss if it sucks

MrChow666267d ago

Oh, add to that bad enemy AI, I remember that from the reviews, I saw a video of a wherewolf boss fight with a very weak AI

thorstein267d ago

And there we glowing reviews for shorter games. It was one of the times where hating this game was "cool."

CrimsonWing69268d ago

Can you show me the reviews that rag on it for not having an online experience?

I’m not doubting you or anything. I’m just being lazy.

isarai268d ago

Sorry, not multiplayer, open world is what I meant.

Tacoboto267d ago

That's also fake news, isarai. Again, the game was consistently criticized for what it was (Pretty but extremely short, extremely linear, hand-holding, no replayability), not for what it wasn't (multiplayer/open-world)

isarai267d ago

Nope, every review uses the term "linear" several times as if it's some inherently bad attribute. Not fake news at all. Since then there's veen plenty of short and sweet single player linear games that get lots of praise, again after the reality of everything being open world set it and it wasn't as great as everyone thought. But at the launch of the last gen everyone had open world fever, and especially the first couple years "linear" was a con in many games reviewed

Tacoboto267d ago

That's your own contortion assuming criticism of its extremely linear design is suddenly a call for it to have been open world.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 267d ago
zumlauf14267d ago

You totally made up a claim regarding an overall review consensus that isn't true. And, instead of just ignoring being called out for it, you respond with "oh actually i ment to say OPEN WORLD". Which literally isn't true either. You can't show us one review that bashed the game for "not being open world". And, somehow the other guy is getting downvoted. Over a bullshit liar.

isarai267d ago

Games were being criticized at that time for any game that wasn't open world or online. So yeah I got one mixed for the other, doesn't change my argument one bit that it would've been received better if it released later. People are agreeing because if you were not riding the "online and open world" hype train at that time, it was blatantly obvious there were biases in play for how games were criticized. Now after all that has happened since people want to say "oh wait these games were actually pretty good" cause they know better now

Rude-ro267d ago

The gameplay was very shallow and when one says repetitive, it is by the very definition for some fights. As in, completely identical but different setting.

The game has amazing potential.
The graphics, the lore, characters…
This could most definitely have been all corrected with a sequel and became a franchise hit…
Still would love to see an attempt.

Ie fantastic premise and moments that shine…
But it had its downfalls that deserved the negative marks.

thorstein267d ago

It was the "game to hate" when it launched. And right here, on this site, we saw people posting stories that were outright fabrications about the game. It was weird. The game launched, it was fun, a really cool game but the hate was too much. And so were the lies.

Minute Man 721267d ago

It was just too short....but I loved every minute of it....double dipped and grabbed the ultimate CE

babadivad267d ago

That isn't true. I remember people talking about how incredibly short it was and the somewhat janky gunplay.

KwietStorm_BLM267d ago

First I'm hearing of this. I don't know what multiplayer has to do with anything. The game was just dull. Amazing graphics, great narrative, great lore, boring gameplay sprinkled in pieces between cutscenes, and lackluster AI and controls.

Snookies12631d ago

"for an Xbox game"

Way to subtly throw shade there. It looked amazing compared to any game at the time it was released.

Never played it myself though, wasn't really interested in it personally. Plus it came at a time when I didn't own an Xbox console. But it was at least different than the usual copy/paste games we get. So I hope it gets another chance sometime soon.

Crows90631d ago

It was a crytek game though

1nsomniac631d ago (Edited 631d ago )

It was a stunning game on all basis. One of the standout games for Xbox as a whole. I ended up buying on pc as well… and yes nothing looked better than it in PC at the time either. Nothing just ok about it, definitely needs a sequel.

fr0sty631d ago

@snookies12, don't pretend like the Xbox One didn't struggle with being gimpled by its tiny pool of ESRAM as a frame buffer. It was significantly weaker than the PS4.

crazyCoconuts631d ago

Metacritic 60, user score 6.4. I'm not alone in putting it into the "ok" category...

VenomCarnage89631d ago

@snookies
Haven't played it but at least you know enough to defend Xbox over it. The game did look good, for an Xbox game. That's not some "subtle shade," it's full on reality.

ManMarmalade631d ago (Edited 631d ago )

The qte's were disappointing though. God of war was doing it back in the ps2 days. As gorgeous as the game was, the gameplay needed to be updated.

annoyedgamer632d ago

I really liked the original Ryse but Crytek doesn't have the funds. The mismanaged their properties and let EA raid them with Crysis for the duration of their relationship. Right now they are working on Crysis 4, I doubt they can spare resources to work on a Ryse sequel.

gamer7804631d ago

It would have to be funded by MS, I really liked Ryse sure it got repetitive but the setting visuals and story were good

moriarty1889631d ago

MS should have funded a sequel to Ryse and Sunset OD. Two good franchises they definitely needed last gen.

annoyedgamer631d ago

MS is too busy trying to become the next EA, Ryse wont be on their list of titles to finance unless it gets a hipster makeover with lootboxes.

darthv72632d ago (Edited 632d ago )

I recently bought it for the steamdeck and have to say... 60fps is a game changer. I really wished MS had gotten a one x patch or series boost mode option but sadly, nope. Other games that definitely deserve a second chance (esp on steamdeck/pc) are quantum break and sunset overdrive. Both deserved 60fps support on one x / series but you have to go to PC for that.

Rumor has it Crytek had plans for a Ryse 2 but due to the low turnout for XB (at the time) it was shelved. They really should give this another shot. i dont care if its multiplat on PS and XB and PC and Switch... just so long as part 2 gets made.

babadivad631d ago

The game is automatically boosted on Series X

darthv72631d ago

sorry... but it's not. It still runs at the same fps the XBO did.

lelo2play631d ago

Graphically it was top notch. Still holds well till this day.

Crows90631d ago

It only needed more enemy variety and few more movesets or weapons to use. That would have made the experience tons better.
