Bethesda’s Fallout 4 Season Pass Price Hike Sets A Horrible Precedent For DLC Sales

Hey Poor Player's Francis DiPersio writes - "While we’re not quite ready to call “Horse Armor” just yet, Bethesda’s Fallout 4 DLC plans seem like a raw deal for their fans."

Hopefully this doesn't set a trend.

dead_pixels2995d ago

Here's hoping. Dying Light did something similar ahead of The Following's release, but when you consider Dying Light: The Following - Enhanced Edition retails for 60 bucks and includes the core game, DLC and a host of improvements compared to Fallout's $60 price tag and potentially $50 DLC cost, there's almost no comparison. It seems like a cash grab.

TwoForce2995d ago

Well, I disagree with you. Dying Light used this tactic and people didn't realize that other developers follow this BS.

ifistbrowni2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

so, if you have an issue with the $50 Season pass, buy it when it's $30.

I originally planned to wait for the DLC to release to buy the $30 season Pass. But, since bethesda is pulling this crap, I'm going to buy the season pass before the price hikes.

You win, Bethesda. You win. Though, I seriously doubt they're raising the price now to ensure people buy it at the $30 mark. I think they're sending this out as a "heads up" for people like me who planned to wait and buy the season pass when all items are released.

Anthotis2994d ago

Sounds like they put as much effort into the cut content pass as they did the main last gen game.

2994d ago
thekhurg2994d ago

It's Bethesda. This should not have come as a surprise to anyone.

b163o12994d ago

@ifistbrowni

Totally agree, you still have until the first of March to take advantage of the offer. Just judging off of Skyrim's DLC it'll be a no brainer.

Silly Mammo2994d ago

Well I fell for it and got the Season Pass at $30. I figured the story DLC retails at $25 so it was worth it.

badz1492994d ago

Wow...so much hypocrisy in this section. $50 season pass? Hmm...where the fvck did I hear that before? Oh yeah...SW Battlefront! Seriously, why are some of u guys here trying to justify this when most totally flipped out and up in arms when EA did it? Not that I'm saying one is better than the other but this is double standards when they are equally as bad! $50 season pass is unacceptable no matter what and no matter who does it!

Milking in gaming has taken the turn for the worst! In the future, this gen should be remembered as the gen that introduced $50 season passes!

ifistbrowni2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

Why are people disagreeing with folks who say they're buying the DLC for $30 before the price hikes? I'm guessing you guys must think the DLC is worth $50 since that will be the only alternative?

No thanks. I think I'll get the same content for $30 over waiting a month and getting the content for $50. That way, theres no harm no foul. The only people who are going to be affected by this are the people that wait until after March 1st to buy the season pass.

Even when Sony/Microsoft do 50% off beyond March 1st, the season pass will be $25. Again, I think I'll just buy it for $30 right now instead of waiting for a sale to save $5. BTW, Season passes almost never go on sale for any game. The only Season Pass sales I ever see on PSN are the base game+season pass bundle, which almost always is more expensive than the season pass by itself (but is always an awesome value for newcomers).

Anyways, I just don't understand the disagrees. I guess you guys would rather us wait and pay $50.

The only other option is to not buy it at all out of spite. But, since I originally planned to buy it (since the launch of the game), this would be redundant. Plus, not buying things out of spite is something I'll leave for the children of the gaming community.

xPhearR3dx2994d ago

As long as the content and quality justifies the price increase, I'm okay with it. Plus, they're still giving us about 2 weeks to get it at $30 compared to $50.

DLC isn't a problem, low quality cash grab and content rips are the problem. A perfect example would be Battlefronts Season Pass.

pivotplease2994d ago

But what if this is just a motivation tactic. Then it's no different from using pre-order bonuses to get people to buy a crappy game. The problem here is that you don't even have a rough idea of what the product is going to be since none of it has been released or even previewed. We only know about a handful of extra features (deathclaws, clothing, and building additions) that would have come for free anyway via the impending console mods. I won't buy this even at the reduced $40 CDN since I don't know what it is. I'll let it release and then go on sale if it interests me. Don't be a blind consumer.

xPhearR3dx2994d ago

Ummm where did I say you HAVE to buy it right now. I even said "As long as the content and quality justifies the price increase, I'm okay with it". Obviously we won't know that information until it's all released. But once it's all released, if it feels like it's $50+ worth of content, then I'm okay that the price was raised.

I've supported Bethesda for many years, they haven't let me down with their DLC support so I'm personally okay with buying the Season Pass up front, because there's a very good chance based off my previous purchases it will be worth it.

DoubleTTB222993d ago

@ pivotplease

Did you just completely miss the announcement of Far Harbor? How did you even hear anything at all about the others without learning about it?

https://bethesda.net/#en/ev...

BattleTorn2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

Ya, giving gamers 2weeks notice of price increases, THAT'D SUCK

-___-

Link2DaFutcha2994d ago

Right?! Honestly I'm excited about it, this means that there's going to be more story DLC and it'll be bigger, I'm all about it.

_-EDMIX-_2994d ago

Hope you're being sarcastic because they're doing everyone a solid by even telling them weeks ahead of time that they could purchase it at a lesser price and still get the extra content there correct to change the price if they feel the content they're releasing justifies it.

I'm fine with most if not all DLC season pass prices if it justified such a price.

Sometimes people make it sound like its a rip off but the reality is if 20 years ago you told many of us gamers that we could pay something to get extra content I'm pretty sure most of us would say yes VS one installment and then wait years to play anything extra on the console front anyway.

I honestly can't complain as no one needs to purchase a season pass and also anyone could merely just wait and purchased the DLC separately based on what they personally like most times I find the people who complain about such things are just giving the classic whining crybaby firstworldproblems concept.

As if the best thing for them to do is give it all away for free and work for absolutely nothing /s

SweatyFlorida2994d ago

Depends on people, unfortunately. While it'd be wise not to support this kind of thing (same thing for pre-order dlc bullshit which still gets supported despite people complaining about it 5-6 years back), the mass will still eat it up, which then creates a domino effect others will adopt(just like how season passes became a big and widespread thing start of this gen)

Dasteru2994d ago

Hopefully it does set a trend. Games shouldn't be held back just to keep with the pricing of very early plans. They are adding additional DLC that wasn't originally planned for. Sure they could have kept the price at $29.99 but then we wouldn't be getting more than the 3 pieces of DLC they already announced.

Chaosdreams2994d ago

I honestly hate people who are unable to use their brains.

showtimefolks2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

wait for game of the yea edition that's what i am doing same with witcher 3

oh and stop this talk of we didn't know what the dlc was gonna be. Every game in development has dlc planned and a separate team working o it

sometimes they cut the main game part to later sell as dlc

bethesda got away with making a game on 10 year old engine and they will get away with this too. Gamers have such a double standard when it comes to things like that

gamers will give benefit of the doubt to one developer but than complain about stuff like graphics and glitches on other games

get ready this is just the start. we the gamers don't want to pay $74.99 or 79.99 so developers have to do this to make money money. game development cost has gone up and up while the games still cost $59.99

there has to be mature conservation so we can move forward. games can't forever cost $59.99

i am more than willing to pay $74.99 if it means less season passes or dlc and a more complete bug free game

ifistbrowni2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

I'd gladly pay 74.99 (USD) also if it meant that we'd never see dlc.

pumpactionpimp2994d ago

Name a game this gen that's been worth a 75-80 dollar price tag. Because I sure as hell haven't played one. If they want to raise prices, I'm all for it, so long as games come out that justify the cost.

Publishers/developers think they have everyone fooled this gen. With dlc, microtransactions, and season passes. Jokes on them, I've bought one game new this year, the rest were used, or heavily discounted goty editions.

showtimefolks2994d ago

pumpactionpimp

witcher 3
bloodborne
tomb raider

just to name few

ifistbrowni

me too but developers will most likely double dip

LamerTamer2994d ago

It will set a trend if we go for it. Everyone acts like we are powerless and when they do these things there is nothing we can do. They act like publishers put guns to their head and make them buy season passes and dlc. Well we can do nothing, as in buying nothing as far as these season passes or dlc.

AsheXII2994d ago

A trend of what? beefy and substantial expansions? Shivering islands cost 30 bucks, the largest DLC in Fallout 4 will cost 25 bucks.

Who even writes these articles?

Pocketaces1112994d ago

Love it people a company actually warns us and does something IMO honest and good and you still find a way to be negative... leave it to N4G people

If they were like every other company they would promise great content start at the $50 range and release crappy useless content.

They realized they are putting even more work then anticipated creating really great different content not in the original game. WARNING you of a price hick rewarding pro active people before the price hike giving everyone an opportunity to get in on it and you still complain.

Chaosdreams2994d ago

Right because we need to be "warned" when they plan to slap us. So our options are, buy now and hope it works out or, tough luck? Some people wait for when the content is known/released before they buy. This is pressuring people to buy before they know what they will actually get or face a price hike because of "ambition."

Yeah, they are so kind and loving.

Pocketaces1112993d ago

This is Bethesda they are the only ones who have every consistently except once given quality add on content they just announced way more then they originally thought for the content... priced it out and realized it was worth more (In stead of charging the guys that already paid for it more and split it into 2 season passes they did the right thing and say you win you get more for same price) ON TOP OF THAT they give everyone more time to buy it at lower price. If it was anyone else I would agree with you but they have a track record.

Otherwise again all Im really saying is don't whine buy it don't buy it speak with your wallet. You don't like what they are doing don't buy it. If they prove you wrong you pay more later but at least you didn't spend less earlier and potentially get disappointed.

I honestly don't have an issue with DLC prices. Games are cheaper than ever now, I'll gladly give my favorite developers/publishers more money for the things I love! I completely agree that the price hike is shifty though. Seems $50 will be the new set price for season passes now.

itsjustexuma2995d ago

You should ask Canadians, Brazilians or Australians how cheap video games are in their countries

RandomGamer2995d ago

Indeed here in Canada it's gotten rough add the 15% sales tax and it means I don't want to pay 50 bucks for a season pass after spending almost 100 dollars for the base game .

akurtz2994d ago Show
JackBNimble2994d ago

We Canadians need to realize the our dollar is around $0.70 to the American dollar. We are still paying $50 American for the same dlc.

RandomGamer...where the hell do you live where you pay 15% sales tax. I am from Alberta, we only have the 5%gst.

LostCypher112994d ago

Jack, Alberta is the only place you going to find sales tax that low all the other proveniences have PST on top of the GST. soo that brings the total to 13% in ontario. resulting in games costing $90 before i even consider buying the seasons pass

JackBNimble2994d ago

I understand that, after all I have lived in this country for 45 years.
I was asking him where he lived that sales tax is at %15.

BuffaloDill2994d ago

Ok, you keep spending $90 for a video game, and I'll keep paying $270 a month on health insurance. "Statistical gathering agencies in both countries (Canada & America) publish averages of income taxes paid, but comparing the two numbers is like comparing the stats of a hockey player with those of a basketball player. The numbers are based on different premises and include different pieces."

pivotplease2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

It was 15% up until only a few years ago. He probably just forgot it got reduced? Unless there's some province with 15% still. I'm too lazy to google it.

@Buffalo Nope. Gas and alcohol are half the price in the states and that $3000 or so you spend a year is nothing compared to the easily $10000 plus most Canadians spend in inflated taxes. That and the healthcare isn't even completely free. People still have to pay for prescriptions, casts, crutches, etc. Maybe the prices are reduced, but it's not free.

rdgneoz32994d ago

"People still have to pay for prescriptions, casts, crutches, etc"

Even with health insurance in the US you still have to pay for prescriptions or crutches (though at a reduced cost), though I've never heard of paying for a cast.

pivotplease2994d ago

Yeah I just paid for a cast two months ago unfortunately lol. And okay good to know, but that doesn't change the other cost discrepancies. I could also bring up how the US gets larger food portions for far cheaper and how Canada unanimously gets ripped off the most as far as phone and internet prices while getting service comparable to a third-world country internet-wise. Basically what I'm trying to say is...the aforementioned health insurance prices are a great deal compared to heavy taxation on every purchase and income.

ShaunCameron2994d ago

It's a combination of high taxes and tariffs, high logistics costs due to geography, smaller market, etcetera.

Looks like you have too much spare money to waste. Why not just donate all your money to Bethesda and name them your heir in your will while you are at it.

JeffGUNZ2994d ago

$50 is too much spare money?? How old are you?

God forbid the guy has a job and earns more spare money then you. Grow up.

Griever2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

@JeffGUNZ

Oh shut up and mind your own business. How ignorant can you be. There are people in the world who earn $50 a month and have to use it to feed a family of upto 6. There are some even in my neighborhood. Even those who earn better live in different circumstances.

Some have families and children to look after. Some even have extended or joint families where a single man has to support upto 10 people. I have to support a family of 6 with just $400 a month even with a university business degree and being relatively highly paid. I have to squeeze my hobby of gaming somewhere in between to keep some fun in my life instead of just working like a machine.

All of us are not living in teh US/UK and do not earn the same. Not everybody is born with a silver spoon in the mouth. Maybe you need to grow up and learn about the world outside your borders before insulting others.

pivotplease2994d ago

@JeffGUNZ Grow up lol. You are being the pot in this proverbial situation.

gamertk4212994d ago

Sounds like people need to move somewhere else.

kaizokuspy2994d ago

Not everyone in the us is wealthy either. I just got married not too long ago and am saving up for my last year of school. Wife and I both work crap jobs, but gaming is a stress release. It's an expensive hobby even for me. I often skip out on dlc these days, rocket league is the exception. $4 is doable vs $50

ShaunCameron2994d ago

@ Griever

He's right, though.

Pocketaces1112994d ago

Wow guys waiting for Gozer to boil a bunch of ooz with all this negativity. You all need to give your head a shake. People with 6 kids and not enough money for feeding them should not be gaming. It sucks but the reality is when money gets tight sacrifices must be made. I have had to limit my gaming... stop drinking alcohol (ya people can do that when money is tight.... most don't though because they feel justified) I have not been on a vacation in 2 years and I know at the end of the day I have a roof over my head and food on my table and that is enough.

We all need a reality check and should understand if we are chatting on this group we probably have it better then at least 50% of the population out their so suck it up.

If you want to get the extra content you fork up the cash (now to pay less, or wait and pay more) Depending on how badly you want it you can choose what you feel is worth giving up.

It's called life. Please people have intelligent conversation and stop complaining about your first world problems it's mind numbing

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 2994d ago
LamerTamer2994d ago (Edited 2994d ago )

As long as people keep buying these "season passes" they will continue to gouge for them. They will also limit content from the original games to make them shorter and goad you into buying the rest of the game later for more. Their goal now is over $100.00 per game. It is up to us to go along with it or not. They have us conditioned that the thing to automatically do is buy the game + season pass. unfortunately gamers just can't help themselves and go for this crap every time.

mushroomwig2995d ago

The price of an entire new game, are they joking? Did anybody in the industry pay attention to the backlash that happened when Star Wars did the same thing?

Double_O_Revan2994d ago

They did. And they also saw what kind of sales figures that game produced. As much as we complain, there are always people crazy enough to pay for it.

ravinash2994d ago

Money talks louder than angry tweets.

JackBNimble2994d ago

So don't buy the seasons pass, I'm not. Just buy the dlc as it comes out.

2994d ago
JackBNimble2994d ago

I personally would like to know what I am paying for before they get my money.

xPhearR3dx2994d ago

Why....the DLC announced already is $40 alone, not including the rest of the DLC for the year. You could pay $30 now and get all of it. Buying each piece of DLC is always gonna cost more than the Season Pass. If you enjoyed Fallout 4 a lot, I don't see any reason to buy it individually instead of the Season Pass if you planned on buying it anyway. You're just screwing yourself out of money at that point.

2994d ago
JackBNimble2994d ago

Oh? Did I say that I was going to buy all the dlc?
I said I like to know what I am paying for before I give UBI any of my money.

Yetter2994d ago

or buy the season pass now two weeks before price increases. They've shown what the first round of DLC is going to offer, if you want it, why wait and pay more?

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 2994d ago
dead_pixels2994d ago

@JackBNimble - That's exactly where I'm at with this, and the fact that the price hike kicks in just before the first piece of DLC releases mean that, embargoes permitting, many gamers may not be able to hear if the first batch of content is any good if the want to get this while it's much cheaper. The timing just seems very suspect.

EDKICK2994d ago

Except the backlash for Battlefront was not really on the price of the season pass alone , it was that the base game was sooo light on content and then the $50 season pass was extremely light on content. Making it $110 for a game still with too little content to even justify a $60 game. Fallout 4 definitely has enough content and all main Bethesda DLC has been substantial. So the Battlefront sutures is quite different.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2994d ago
crazychris41242995d ago

Guess I'll just get the complete edition next year. Didn't play 3 until last year, I have no problem waiting a little longer.

kneon2994d ago

That's the best solution for single=player games. My solution is just to play the game and ignore season's passes and DLC, there are just too many other games to play to be stuck on one for more than a couple of months.

2994d ago
ZaWarudo2995d ago

I'm actually on the opposite here, i think it's a sign of good upcoming content, although i do agree on the first two seems lackluster, but it'll be a bonus since i just want that $24.99 expansion.

And i know i'm making a gamble here, but Bethesda has delivered great DLCs in the past, so i'm confident that i'll get my money's worth.

pivotplease2994d ago

Would rather pick up the Shivering Isles-esque content that is substantial and leave the Horse Armors and Hearthfires in the gutter where they belong. Basically, I don't give a damn about aesthetics and cosmetics... just significant content. This is why I skipped pretty much every season pass ever but picked up Witcher 3's pass immediately (for less than half the price of this).

Isn't this a better and easier work around?...

There is a partial workaround that adds the Fallout 4 launcher back  ;to the Steam Deck version of the game. Players need to add “SteamDeck=0 %command%” to Fallout 4’s launch options in the game’s settings on Steam Deck. But it’s wild and not great that players have to do this just to change visual settings while playing on Valve’s portable PC.

This update on PC kills mods, they still didn't improve or fix the draw calls and if you have an RTX card the game still crashes unless you turn off debris.
So if you mod the game it now looks worse, plays worse, all of your saves are broken and the game breaking bugs are still present.

purple1012d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Good work detective

Bethesda strikes again, always thought their games were a tad boring anyway, this was even before Microsoft brought them. Used to quake 3 team arena to death, on an old pc, at the time it was new, fresh, fast paced and innovative, their games these days, are none-of-the-above

Michiel19891d 15h ago

Ever heard of a game called Doom or Wolfenstein, detective?
Also quake 3 arena was made by ID, which at the time wasn't part of Bethesda.

Profchaos1d 19h ago

Yeah I've had friends rebuy the game because the ps plus didn't work and they used to own the last gen version sold off the physical after the PS plus pack included fallout when they got the ps5.

So overall I know ms has likely warned quote a bit from this error.

Barlos1d 11h ago

This game hasn't aged well. I was really looking forward to the update, but I'm just not enjoying it. I never did get on with the settlement building and raiders, and I still don't. I won't be going back to this now.

mkis0071d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

Settlement stuff was way undercooked. Too many settlements and QOL updates are needed, and can only be added by mods...which disable achievements. The game does 2 things better than past games: Gunplay and scavenging.

Profchaos1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

Have to agree settlement stuff was boring and dull but I loved the game outside of that still do. But next to other games is it's era like witcher 3 it always felt a little stuck in the mid 2000s
