Ubisoft opposes EA registration of "Ghost" trademark because of Ghost Recon

" On January 29, 2016, Ubisoft Entertainment and Ubisoft, Inc., filed via the USPTO an opposition against Electronic Arts Inc.'s two trademark applications for "Ghost" (US Serial No. 86/568,852 and 86/568,854). An opposition against these filings was initiated in September last year, but the actual lawsuit did not come until now. Ubisoft believe they will be damaged by registration of these marks, and cites a long list of Ghost Recon related trademarks as grounds for opposition. Below is the opposition:"

I am with Ubisoft on this one. Ghost Recon is already an established Ubisoft franchise and having an game or something else called Ghost by EA could be confusing and damaging for Ghost Recon especially if the thing by EA is of low quality.

Ghost is the name of a studio under EA. Not a game.

They developed NFS: Rivals and NFS (2015).

Ubisoft's claim is therefore stupid.

If Ubisoft was truly concerned about their IP and not for any ulterior motives of trying to block a competitor, then why have they not done anything against City Interactive's Sniper: 'Ghost' Warrior for the last 3 games.

Shitty corporate dog move I say.

That's a good point! Either way, couldn't EA just rename Ghost to Ghost Games or something?

Epic Games Faces $1.2 Million Fine Over "Unfair Practices," Plans to Fight Back

Epic Games is facing a $1.2 million fine by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets over "unfair practices" in the Fortnite shop.

It might be cheaper to simply pay the fine. Fighting said fine could cost millions due to court and lawyer fees. Fortnite generates well over a 100 million in each month, so Epic has plenty of cash.

franwex4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

But if they did pay it, then they are basically admitting that they did something they weren’t supposed to be doing. If they fight it, they may win and continue to have a sense of urgency for their micro transactions thus making more money long term.

The market for games like this is too over saturated to make a dent in other established games' player counts. Trying to start all over with a whole new multiplayer meta and grinding to get better is not feasible when there's already a ton of similar games that have come out before it.
