Remembering Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

It's always nice to remember the greats and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ranks high on the list of first-person shooters.

I loved "All Ghilled up" and the Spec Ops mission from Modern Warfare 2 set in the same area.

I remember Call of Duty just being another random war game and then this game came out. I was working at Gamestop at the time and the way everyone was talking about this game reminded me of when Halo first came out. It was the beginning of something huge and I could have never predicted Call of Duty becoming a household name.

So bittersweet thinking back on COD4. Such an excellent shooter, but it is also hard to ignore how it aided in the first step in the wrong direction for the series and much of the gaming industry.

A remaster of this and demon souls would literally just end my outside life. One of the mps i played the most in my 37 years. Definitely a gem.

Completely agree. Two of the finest games from last generation, however, I would add Dark Souls as well. I would love to replay that at 1080/60fps in addition to Demon's Souls.

Modern Warfare 1 & 2 easily have the best MP and SP campaigns in the entire franchise. At one point, I was straight up addicted to COD4. Blew almost everything in my life off at the time including schoolwork. The game was revolutionary. Too bad Activision became greedy and then COD became garbage in terms of quality after MW2. The only saving grace is the zombie mode and that can get old fast.

Yeah and to be honest the only reason i stopped playing and dont play now is because it became riddled with cheats and hacks. It seemed even console versions haf computer hacks in them with weird stuff happening like ppl getting infinite streaks, invincibility, ppls names flashing in the screen, etc...

And yeah loved Dark Souls as well. I love all the Fromsoft games.

Call of Duty 4 didn't just work because it was based on modern day battlefield tactics and equipment/scenarios, it worked because the single player campaign was one of the most satisfying in the entire franchise, (Call of Duty 2 comes real close, however) and the game showed great prowess towards harboring a robust online multiplayer system with brilliant level design, and a nice clean layout to make it easily accessible for anyone to play.

For me, COD4 was just a brilliant game in general, and it's not that today's shooters are bad by any stretch of the word, but when you bought this game, you were treated to both an immensenly satisfying campaign and a rock solid multiplayer.

COD4 was a natural progression (for me) from Halo. Halo 2 perfected a great single player with my favorite multiplayer of any game, even to this day, and where future Halos screwed with the formula, Call of Duty seemed content to stay with what worked (to a fault, I suppose).

I get nostalgic towards older generations of games, like my N64, PS1, and especially my original Xbox. But now I am nostalgic for early 360 titles, and I loved that throughout the transition from my first xbox to xbox 360, All my friends hopped from one system to another, almost flawlessly. We had in game chat and the party system pretty damn close to launch.

I often think about these things, about games like Modern Warfare, and the thing that makes me miss this particular game is that behind Infinity Ward's brilliant reinvention of the franchise, one so deeply rooted in WWII, It was that Infinity Ward took great risks, and pushed out a finely polished product. They were up against the likes of Medal of Honor and Battlefield, and they had to truly showcase what Call of Duty could do differently, even better then those well established franchises. It seems like they've become to comfortable, because for the most part, no other military FPS has challenged them to make a truly better product.

Yeah one of the only sp Cod campaigns i finished. The game was great in sp and mp until the cheats and hacks in mp.

Ahh the good old days, used to play this every day after school. Put God knows how many hours into the MP and played through the SP at least 8 times. Phenomenal game.

I remember watching a game trailer and watching Vince Zapella demoing the game. He was playing on Overgrown with with the SAW. There was something about the sound and the way the rounds left the gun, that I just felt in love. The bullets had this wiggly animation when it left the barrel of the gun, that looked so real. I bought the game the day it came out. The only game that took me away from COD4 was Battlefield:BC2. I hope Activison remasters COD4:MW. I will buy it in a heartbeat.

I really love COD4 but don't agree with the article.
The single player wasn't a big part of the success of the game.
Was it fun? sure! mostly like all COD single player.

The real success from this game came from all the new game play ideas they implement in the game.

- Leveling up with prestige.
- Perks
- Customizing your guns, class, nade and all
- The scoretreak system.

A big part of the success also come from the solid game play, great map design and tight control for this game.

In the 8 bits era Mega man was often flame for redoing the same.
today replace Megaman with the COD franchise.
