ESA Slams NPD for Misleading 2015 Video Game Sales Numbers

Yesterday was "NPD Day" meaning that we saw a myriad of video game sales information come to light from 2015. Things seemed quite accurate, with Call of Duty topping the list for the seventh year running and Nintendo not making the list at all (sorry, Nintendo), but ESA took exception to the way the numbers were reported

Including Digital sales should be there in the future because they did indeed grow exponentially those last two year.

And there was no 'Slamming' in what ESA said.

"While they agree that the data is correct, they claim it does not include significant, growing portions of the industry."

donthate3049d ago

Furthermore, I feel like it isn't NPDs fault they can't track digital sales especially on consoles.

rainslacker3048d ago (Edited 3048d ago )

Exactly. If publishers wanted that information known, they could provide it. Since they hold those numbers pretty close to their vests, it's not NPD's fault, since they don't derive their numbers from random guesses or polling information.

I've always wondered why publishers don't make those numbers available. Even discerning numbers from annual/quarterly reports and comparing them to NPD doesn't work because of the way they report numbers by lumping them all into one group instead of having a breakdown like NPD does.

Heck, if the ESA is pissed off, then they can report the numbers. They don't though, because those they represent don't want that information made public.

Apollosupreme3048d ago

They should state their limitation explicitly.

Eonjay3048d ago

@Apollosupreme

Its pretty well known that NPD tracks retail sales with their retail partners.

donthate3048d ago (Edited 3048d ago )

rainslacker:

I think the main issue why the ESA isn't happy is that the NPD numbers paint a picture that sales are down and the market is slowing down. That isn't a good picture to paint of an industry.

Slow down may or may not be the case, but we won't know unless console makers publish their numbers. I'm not sure the companies (as in publisher and platform holders) involved care enough to share as to give away their competitive advantage of what sells and what does not.

rainslacker3048d ago

Yes, they are upset because NPD reported that it's "slowing down". I don't feel they have a right to be mad at NPD though, because NPD reports what they can based on the metrics which they use to derive their numbers...and those metrics showed a decline...I guess...I wasn't really paying attention.

If there is some new data which needs to be accounted for to show the actual state of the industry, then the ESA should be lobbying their partners to release the data to NPD to include in it's charts, so the ESA can make itself feel important and not part of a declining industry.

NPD doesn't really care either way, it's not their job to support the industry, just report what they know. It's the ESA's job to support the industry.

UnwanteDreamz3049d ago (Edited 3049d ago )

Correct me if I'm wrong but NPD doesn't track numbers for consumers but instead is partnered with retailers to provide these tracking services. ESA is wrong in assuming that NPD is the reason digital sales aren't tracked.

Unless ESA is paying for services provided by NPD how can they gripe? Am I thinking of the wrong company here?

rainslacker3048d ago

ESA doesn't need to pay for those numbers. They can get them from their partners....which is most of the gaming industry.

They're pissed because NPD isn't tracking portions of the market which are actually significant for reporting on the overall state of the industry, which is what the ESA is supposed to promote.

But yes, you are right, the reason NPD doesn't report those numbers is because they don't have access to the information, because the same industry that ESA represents will not give those numbers out publicly, and there is no reason for publishers to give it to them, because they don't need to get those numbers from NPD which they would just have to buy back from NPD to begin with.

My theory is since new game software sales aren't as high as some people want to believe, and nowhere close to where publishers want them, they don't want to release the information because it shows that the digital age isn't that close. This is supported by the fact that whenever digital numbers are released, it's done in such a way that makes it look much larger by including all digital revenue including MT, DLC, new title sales, and subscription charges. For the most part, those new title sales are a lot lower than what they want people to believe, because it doesn't push the concept that digital is a mainstream and more desired way to buy games.

ifistbrowni3049d ago

Yeah, but it's not a catchy headline unless it says they "slammed" them.

Gotta get clicks.

jb2273048d ago

The same situation is happening w/ the Nielsen system in regards to tv, even in light of monumentally growing streaming & DVR viewing. All it is doing is signing the death warrant for future popular games & shows being bought in the new methods & being under marked through older physical means while championing content that is waning in popularity in those older distribution methods.

I still buy physical myself but w/ every passing year, gamers like myself are becoming the exception to the rule. I wish platforms would release digital sales numbers but they'd probably get taken to task by physical outlets like Gamestop for doing so, so they are stuck in limbo.

kevnb3048d ago

Nielsen only tracks some viewers, and those that are tracked know they are being tracked. I think it's always been flawed.

butchertroll3048d ago

Microsoft, SCEA and Nintendo are part of ESA, they should start to provide digital sales to NPD.

Who or what is ESA ? They are right though .

Bismarn3049d ago

I don't know what ESA is, and at this point I'm afraid to ask. Hopefully they are not a mobile game trade group because then I must disagree them on principle, even though they are right.

CarlosX3603049d ago

ESA stands for Electronic Software Association, they claim to be the regulating body of the video game industry, much like the MPAA or ESRB is for entertainment ratings. But they own E3, and organize events as such.

ifistbrowni3049d ago

a good article/journalist would have informed the reader. Too bad we have to look to the comment section for answers.

rainslacker3048d ago

They're also a lobby group for the industry in general and help promote the industry...and this latter things is why they're pissed because NPD made the industry look less healthy. Practically every publisher is partnered with them.

They have no right to be angry at NPD. If they want to promote sector of the gaming market, they are free to do so, but I'd imagine their partners aren't that willing to allow them to do that with the sales data they say is missing from NPD.

solar3048d ago

@ifistbrowni

100% correct. why? because the readers have to be told, because looking it up themselves is too difficult. look at vikingland1 above us. instead of searching for the answer, lets ask others to TELL ME what it means, and wait for the answer.

DefenderOfDoom23049d ago (Edited 3049d ago )

Rip-Ridah3049d ago

vikingland13048d ago (Edited 3048d ago )

Aceman183048d ago

Does anybody else?

DragoonsScaleLegends3048d ago

I am forced to pay taxes on Xbox Live and Nintendo Network but as of yet PlayStation Network does not charge for tax. I'm in NC, USA.

ABizzel13049d ago

I agree with the statement, however, the information regarding digital sales is not up to NPD. That's specifically up to the publisher of the game.

Sony, MS, Nintendo, Steam, Origins, Uplay, etc... all have the data of the games that sell on their distribution services, but none of them can give this information out freely without the potential threat of being sued by the publisher, and if the publishers want to keep numbers out of the media for reasons such as lack of sales, then that's entirely up to them to do, and there's nothing no one can do about it, because guessing would again open room for any kind of legal issues regardless of how petty it would be.

The only thing that can help with this is to do what mobile does and add a download counter, so you can see how many people downloaded the game, which wouldn't be 100% sure way to tell the sales, but it could help.

jb2273048d ago

I didn't realize the publishers hold the rights on releasing numbers, that is absolutely backwards. Look at album sales, they are similar to games in having publishers & distributors but an albums sales, streams & iTunes stats are always just a click away. There's no reason not to be above board really. Do any gamers honestly buy games solely based off of how many copies it sold? Does that ever even come into play for anyone? I read reviews & watch streams but I could care less what a game sells beyond my favorite franchises that I want to see continued in a healthy manner.

ABizzel13048d ago

Unlike music and movies, Video games have absolutely no kind of unionization or anything to govern the medium. Games are completely publisher and pro-corporate.

TheColbertinator3049d ago

Software sales are up for discussion. Hardware sales are not.

On one hand this is great news for Sony (a sale is a sale), but on the other I am still without one and millions of others are as well. So thank you scalpers... Sony appreciates all you do for them.

(yes I'm bitter that i still can't buy a PS5)

HICK1166d ago

I don't think Sony appreciates it because scalpers aren't buying games or subscribing to PS+ which is where Sony makes the most money. Scalpers are costing Sony money at the moment as is confirmed by the jump in sales of Spiderman when new stock drops in UK and real buyers get PS5s.

Sunny_D1166d ago (Edited 1166d ago )

Actually the fact scalpers are still buying up PS5’s means that they are still selling like hot cakes to people who are willing to pay extra for a PS5. If no one was buying from scalpers, then they wouldn’t continue to buy up all the stock. So in the end (it doesn’t even matter), it’s most likely still going to a unique user who will buy games for the system.

andy851166d ago

That's just because more in general get them when more stock is released. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of launch day consoles have been turned on by now. All the scalped consoles will be in the hands of true gamers because the price is steadily falling, it just sucks they have to pay extra for the privilege

Muzikguy1165d ago

Scalpers are costing Sony money for sure. They should just start releasing to physical stores so this can be remedied (and I can get one)

That sucks. I was able to buy enough next gen consoles for friends and family...like 6 PS5s and 3 digital, 8 Series X, and 5 Series S. I have a few for me also. Got a 3080 as well. Injust need another one for my son's rig. Guess i got lucky back at launch. Hope everyone gets one soon.

UltraNova1166d ago

What the hell man, are you trolling?

RedDevils1166d ago

Yeah right get 3080 while get 6 PS5, who are you trying to convince people on the internet or you?

andy851166d ago

Honestly it's not even impossible to get that many. If you follow all the twitter pages that inform you when there's stock somewhere instantly and use the discord stock chat it was actually pretty easy. I got my personal one and one each for 2 friends pretty easily, and Series X notifications were popping up very frequently

Sayai jin1166d ago

@UltraNova, Am I trolling? Huh? No. Me and my wife were able to use our phones and PCs to order most of those on the PS5 and Xbox launches. We had little issues with ordering those consoles. It sucks to know people are still waiting or having to deal with scalpers.

Just as I stated, I hope everyone who wants one gets one soon.

@S2K, are you referring to me? If you are, I am not bitter for any reason. Rushing to these articles?

I don't understand the internet bravado people spew on this site.

Sayai jin1165d ago

@RedDevils49m, proce something? I am not following. If you mean prove to peiple I own those consoles, no. It unfortunate that people are still without consoles mainly do to scalpers and limited suprise. I didn't think it was that difficult to get them on launch day as i had very little problem in doing so.

Yes, I like my toys. I fully retired at age 42 and live very comfortably. I buy my children (all are gamers), other family members, and friends gadgets and the like. I did the same thing last gen Nice surprises. I still have a few consoles that I haven't sent to friends yet, as a few of them are still deployed abroad. I will be getting more as they become more available so I can put them more than just in my theater. Yes, theater. But then again, by your logic I must be trying to prove something.. I have two gaming rigs myself, and one I was lucky to get a 3080. Now, that was difficult to get.

Not sure why my comment reads that I am trying to prove something. Imagine proving something to people who you don't know. That may make sense to you, but not me. I'm a retired SOF vet and middle age gamer, I could care less what people think.

It seems as though your comment says something about you instead of me. Maybe it's an age thing or life status thing, but thinking someone couldn't afford or get those consoles doesn't make since to me. It does to you.

Back on topic, like I aforementioned, I hope all those who haven't been able to get a console is able to get one soon.

Sayai jin1165d ago (Edited 1165d ago )

@Andy, yes indeed. It wasn't difficult for me and some others. I do know others are having problems. There are twiiter pages that will alert you and are pretty on point accord9ng to my son. He wants a 3080 and is using one of those pages or stock alert to get notified. I honestly haven't looked much at getting more for now. I got everyone I wanted to get one for covered, with the exception of one friend in Italy. He got one 3 weeks or so ago by using twitter alerts.

@SegaSaturn, I saw a few arricles on main news sites saying that stock was nore constant now so I assumed it was easier, but when I see people still saying they are having a difficult time (like in this article), it surprised me.

ScootaKuH1165d ago

Kilua1165d ago (Edited 1165d ago )

darthv721166d ago

If there is a silver lining to scalpers being stuck with product, it is they are more willing to haggle on the 2nd hand market. That's how I got my wiiu years ago when they were first being scalped. Got it for less than retail after there was enough stock to go around.

Im already seeing local sellers only marking up but $100-200 instead of close to double.

@excal, tell your friends to use teitter restock alerts. I have heard and seen people have luck with that.

@Darth, legit retailers are marking them up?

Timzster1166d ago

Here's hoping that it does happen soon and we all can get one without any scalping on the horizon.

ocelot071166d ago

It's going to be another generation where Sony sell another 100+ million consoles I think.

Here in the UK it's hard enough getting a disk ps5 console. But the digital I am starting to think is a myth. Never seen one in stock and every time I see on twitter of people excited they finally got a console it's always the disc one. Followed by loads of people upset they have yet again missed out on the cheaper digital.

darthv721166d ago

Sort of like the 20gb vs the 60gb PS3? I swear I can find 60's and up but its next to impossible to find the all black 20gb. It's like they only made a small portion of those before they were axed in favor of the 40gb non-bc models.

ocelot071166d ago

Here in Europe we didn't even get that 20gb PS3. But yer it's kind of like that. Am sure Sony know that majority want the disc version. But it seems like the digital one is in so much demand I have never actually seen one in-stock.

yeahokwhatever1166d ago (Edited 1166d ago )

why would you not want the 60gb ps3? that system is PERFECT. mine doesnt even work anymore and I still have it on my entertainment stand because it just looks so good.

I certainly don't understand this need to take sides.

If you don't care, don't watch. If you care, enjoy.

It feels like some feel the need to validate the decision of their brand of choice not to attend. Eh.

On the press side, I feel like there's a lot of petty spitefulness (mostly about that data leak) and politics ("The ESA said things I don't like, how dare they!") involved with this whole "unload as much mud as we can" trend on E3. Personally, I don't care about that crap. I'm here for the games.

I don't think that gamers are against it. Some just aren't as excited for it as they may have been in the past. I don't really see why any gamer would be against a game conference, especially those that are known for game announcements.

yellowgerbil1559d ago

Because the ESA are the villains of the industry. They are a lobby that pushes Microtransations and loot boxes, and I believe they are also in charge of the ESRB but I could be wrong with that.
As for the actual event, Last year they were so incompetent that they posted around 2000 peoples personal info on their website that attended e3.
Personally I don't care, All I ever cared about were the press conferences, and they have been getting worse each year since 2014. Was hoping for both systems to ramp up for the new consoles, but they are staying pretty mum and hype is dissipating. Hopefully whether at E3, or elsewhere Sony and MS start doing huge shows with awesome reveals because 2013 this is not.

Which gaming event will more about the GAMES than E3 this year? That´s right. None.

Good luck for those companies who choosed to skip E3 to try their luck on their own with their very closed, safe and controlled enveriomment which leaves us, their fans, in the dark wondering how and when those companies intents to reveal/show something.

I rather have those sweet moment of excitement, anxiety, anticipation, hype and enjoyment once in a year by June.

"Influencer Festival" sounds like youtubers to me. I hope im wrong and E3 is amazing, but with that info and everyone jumping ship, it doesn't sound good.

mkis0071559d ago

E3 is less about games than Gamescom. E3 is a press event for the industry. It is less about getting games into the hands of players and more about showing off to reporters.

So maybe wait for an answer next time before incorrectly answering your own question.

SolidGamerX1559d ago

@Obscure_Observer

Those same companies skipped E3 last year to "try their luck on their own", over a hundred million consoles sold later seems it worked out just fine thanks for your concern though. FYI E3 isn't the only show the whole year so no fans are in the dark but nice try.

Atanasrikard1559d ago

@mkis007

How many games are revealed at E3 vs. Gamescom? E3 is about the games, Gamescom is about the fans. The vast majority of the games that people get hands on with at Gamescom were revealed at E3.

Maybe don't answer when you don't know what you are talking about.

@solidgamerx

Holy shit, who sold 100 million consoles last year!??!? Oh wait, no... they sold 100 million consoles after they revealed it at E3. Nice try though.

I really don't get why people prefer to be drip fed reveals throughout the year. I don't mind the few reveals that happen during the big conferences (PAX, Gamescom, etc.) but I will always prefer one singular event with huge amounts of reveals that I can look forward to once per year. Just seems to me that when you drip feed stuff, the only people who are really going to see it are those hardcore, dedicated fans who scour the internet for every bit of news they can find about their plastic of choice.

Maybe E3 does need some kind of update, or maybe it is just the changing of the times and we have to accept it, just like everything else. Until then, I will always look forward to E3 and once it goes away, I can only hope something similar takes it's place.

Automatic791558d ago

Youtubers help promote games and depending on the youtuber provide point of views and or opinions that help you understand the passion behind the game. I see nothing wrong with youtubers or content creators getting shine at E3. I can assure you it all come back to games.

rainslacker1559d ago

I think there will be stuff to enjoy even if Sony isn't there. If not, then maybe those people are getting too hung up on their console preference. We may not get some nice tidy conference that we want, but there should still be plenty of news coming out of it all. If you take away all the spectacle, then maybe some of the actual news and announcements that go under the radar normally can get some more attention. All I really recall from last year was this narrative that Sony won without even showing up, and a couple of Square's games. Take away that console war narrative, and there should be hundreds of things to read about. We won't talk about them, because we seem to not talk about games here much, but at least the news will be out there.
