Yesterday was "NPD Day" meaning that we saw a myriad of video game sales information come to light from 2015. Things seemed quite accurate, with Call of Duty topping the list for the seventh year running and Nintendo not making the list at all (sorry, Nintendo), but ESA took exception to the way the numbers were reported
The NPD Group states that the PS5 is now the fastest-selling hardware platform in US history (in terms of $ amount), while the DualSense leads all dollar sales for accessories.
On one hand this is great news for Sony (a sale is a sale), but on the other I am still without one and millions of others are as well. So thank you scalpers... Sony appreciates all you do for them.
(yes I'm bitter that i still can't buy a PS5)
I don't think Sony appreciates it because scalpers aren't buying games or subscribing to PS+ which is where Sony makes the most money. Scalpers are costing Sony money at the moment as is confirmed by the jump in sales of Spiderman when new stock drops in UK and real buyers get PS5s.
Actually the fact scalpers are still buying up PS5’s means that they are still selling like hot cakes to people who are willing to pay extra for a PS5. If no one was buying from scalpers, then they wouldn’t continue to buy up all the stock. So in the end (it doesn’t even matter), it’s most likely still going to a unique user who will buy games for the system.
That's just because more in general get them when more stock is released. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of launch day consoles have been turned on by now. All the scalped consoles will be in the hands of true gamers because the price is steadily falling, it just sucks they have to pay extra for the privilege
Scalpers are costing Sony money for sure. They should just start releasing to physical stores so this can be remedied (and I can get one)
That sucks. I was able to buy enough next gen consoles for friends and family...like 6 PS5s and 3 digital, 8 Series X, and 5 Series S. I have a few for me also. Got a 3080 as well. Injust need another one for my son's rig. Guess i got lucky back at launch. Hope everyone gets one soon.
Yeah right get 3080 while get 6 PS5, who are you trying to convince people on the internet or you?
Honestly it's not even impossible to get that many. If you follow all the twitter pages that inform you when there's stock somewhere instantly and use the discord stock chat it was actually pretty easy. I got my personal one and one each for 2 friends pretty easily, and Series X notifications were popping up very frequently
@UltraNova, Am I trolling? Huh? No. Me and my wife were able to use our phones and PCs to order most of those on the PS5 and Xbox launches. We had little issues with ordering those consoles. It sucks to know people are still waiting or having to deal with scalpers.
Just as I stated, I hope everyone who wants one gets one soon.
@S2K, are you referring to me? If you are, I am not bitter for any reason. Rushing to these articles?
I don't understand the internet bravado people spew on this site.
@RedDevils49m, proce something? I am not following. If you mean prove to peiple I own those consoles, no. It unfortunate that people are still without consoles mainly do to scalpers and limited suprise. I didn't think it was that difficult to get them on launch day as i had very little problem in doing so.
Yes, I like my toys. I fully retired at age 42 and live very comfortably. I buy my children (all are gamers), other family members, and friends gadgets and the like. I did the same thing last gen Nice surprises. I still have a few consoles that I haven't sent to friends yet, as a few of them are still deployed abroad. I will be getting more as they become more available so I can put them more than just in my theater. Yes, theater. But then again, by your logic I must be trying to prove something.. I have two gaming rigs myself, and one I was lucky to get a 3080. Now, that was difficult to get.
Not sure why my comment reads that I am trying to prove something. Imagine proving something to people who you don't know. That may make sense to you, but not me. I'm a retired SOF vet and middle age gamer, I could care less what people think.
It seems as though your comment says something about you instead of me. Maybe it's an age thing or life status thing, but thinking someone couldn't afford or get those consoles doesn't make since to me. It does to you.
Back on topic, like I aforementioned, I hope all those who haven't been able to get a console is able to get one soon.
@Andy, yes indeed. It wasn't difficult for me and some others. I do know others are having problems. There are twiiter pages that will alert you and are pretty on point accord9ng to my son. He wants a 3080 and is using one of those pages or stock alert to get notified. I honestly haven't looked much at getting more for now. I got everyone I wanted to get one for covered, with the exception of one friend in Italy. He got one 3 weeks or so ago by using twitter alerts.
@SegaSaturn, I saw a few arricles on main news sites saying that stock was nore constant now so I assumed it was easier, but when I see people still saying they are having a difficult time (like in this article), it surprised me.
you aint got shit and are probably still playing on an iphone 3gs and ps2.
PICTURE OR VIDIO PROOF or it didn't happen!!
I am a Rap star and i just bought my 3rd private Jet, see we can all boast and live in laalaa land. its insensitive to boast on here without proof while millions are struggling to get consoles
Ya right....
I've even had notifications when they go on sale and by the time I get my order in they've all been sold out.
I'm just going to wait 6 months or a year.
Yeah we know you are bitter, you usually rush to these articles, but you are bitter for a different reason it seems.
The drops are getting plentiful now. You just need to pay attention. The walmart rewards mastercard + walmart app was the trick that landed mine.
@muzikguy I don't agree with scalping but I'm not sure how they're costing Sony money
Once PS5 stock delivery and manufacturing normalizes , the sale numbers will skyrocket like there is no tomorrow :D
Yep. I know friends who can't even get one. Hopefully, this will get sorted out soon and scalpers will be stuck with a ton of them. Bwahahhaa!
If there is a silver lining to scalpers being stuck with product, it is they are more willing to haggle on the 2nd hand market. That's how I got my wiiu years ago when they were first being scalped. Got it for less than retail after there was enough stock to go around.
Im already seeing local sellers only marking up but $100-200 instead of close to double.
@excal, tell your friends to use teitter restock alerts. I have heard and seen people have luck with that.
@Darth, legit retailers are marking them up?
Here's hoping that it does happen soon and we all can get one without any scalping on the horizon.
It's going to be another generation where Sony sell another 100+ million consoles I think.
Here in the UK it's hard enough getting a disk ps5 console. But the digital I am starting to think is a myth. Never seen one in stock and every time I see on twitter of people excited they finally got a console it's always the disc one. Followed by loads of people upset they have yet again missed out on the cheaper digital.
Sort of like the 20gb vs the 60gb PS3? I swear I can find 60's and up but its next to impossible to find the all black 20gb. It's like they only made a small portion of those before they were axed in favor of the 40gb non-bc models.
Here in Europe we didn't even get that 20gb PS3. But yer it's kind of like that. Am sure Sony know that majority want the disc version. But it seems like the digital one is in so much demand I have never actually seen one in-stock.
why would you not want the 60gb ps3? that system is PERFECT. mine doesnt even work anymore and I still have it on my entertainment stand because it just looks so good.
^I want the 20gb because it is different in that it is all black where as I already have a chrome trim 80gb as well as the gun metal 40gb variants.
Its a beast, dualsense amazing, the true power of this system in a few years will be incredible.
I think the nvidia gpus and amd gpus are selling faster since they sell out in seconds. I had a ps5 in my amazon cart and didnt buy it . Rtx 3070 and 3080 never had a chance to buy them.
If you got it into your cart, that means nothing. I've gotten to the end of checkout multiple times before getting kicked back with an out of stock notice literally 15 seconds after the stock went live for a given store.
NO i paid for it then did a quick cancel i was checking to see if it was really there.
@anusgold
I can't even begin to fathom how full of shit you are 😂😂😂
"NO i paid for it then did a quick cancel i was checking to see if it was really there".
Who the f$#@ would be stupid enough to risk having $499 withdrawn from their account out of curiosity, for a product they don't intend to buy?
The dumbest mf on earth. That's who 😂👍👏 28079;👏
This has to be fake news. I remember reading on here that PS5 was basically obsolete and PlayStation should go out of business because of gamepass.
I'm still amazed I was able to secure one at launch and to be honest now that the hype has died down its just like owning a faster PS4, in a sense I too am waiting for the next gen.
I don't the hype died down. Trust me if you put your PS5 up for sale now it will be sold in second or minutes lol
No idea what you're talking about. DS was amazing and I'm still loving mine.
I am thirsty for more proper next gem games though.
Maybe the majority gamers opt for quality games and consistency over services. Both important but it's clear which has been the driver for unit sales. More units sales, more potential for subs. It's not rocket science
This is great news for the industry - a healthy industry is great for us gamers.
Also glad to hear that the industry isn't being too affected by the pandemic.
"In February 2021, the PS5 overtook a record held by the Switch when it became the fastest-selling console in US history based on "total dollar sales after four months in market." https://t.co/DJFcHkFi1l https://t.co/qR2tHAdZLB&quo...
Sony surpassed previous record held by Nintendo Switch in the middle of a pandemic and production problems. That's truly amazing.
Once the console is widely available for everyone, sales are going to skyrocket.
I thought you didn't like comparisons of the Switch to the PS5? Something about a portable vs console sort of thing...?
Well the PS5 is more expensive so it doesn't need to sell as many to bring in more revenue. But still it managed to do then when it's been extremely supply constrained the entire time so that is impressive.
But some think it will change, just wait for this and for that. This gen Sony will get even more marketshare. The hype is real and not fake with low production...
Sony PlayStation5 is the most sought after next gen console, because of the pedigree of games that are celebrated around the industry. So much so that when one the developers leaves and joins another company it is celebrated by that company fans. Sony games are on a level that others only aspire to, games that places are making developers ambassadors. Yo the point that they want to make Sonys entire development studios permanent ambassadors.
Is anyone surprised it is selling this fast. It is much deserved!
Scalper bots buy them all up immediately. I wonder at what point we can just get one.
Sony is making me miss out on the meta that Demon Souls is now enjoying!!!
I’m one of the fortunate to have bought PS5 from GAME after numerous attempts. Very happy with my new PS5. So, people just keep trying and don’t buy from scalpers, such as on eBay. Follow some good PS5 stock alert Twitter and download good apps. You’ll have your chance.
Impressive, especially considering there are so many struggling to nab one still.
Yeah, it definitely has been top on the list for everyone, thanks to the pandemic, its the only game console that makes staying at home not boring.
https://creebhills.com/2021...
I managed to get both versions of the PS 5 and a Series X at launch for retail price. Imo that was the best time and easiest time to get them.
We're living in a generation where Cardi B gets the highest awards, just give me quality and anything after that is extra.
Good job Sony. You managed to make the masses crazy and ravenous for a machine that is a marginal upgrade of the PS4 pro. You haven’t duped everybody! Some of us can wait for for the real next gen console.
I purchased a PS5 from Walmart on March 4th. A Co worker was able to score one from Sony direct on Wednesday and received his yesterday. I went over to check it out and in my opinion I wasn’t impressed. I cancelled my Walmart purchase after watching him play for 2 hours. It was nice to see existing games run in 4K and 60fps. However, they are existing games that most of us have already played through. The upgrade didn’t get me excited enough to want to re download these titles and play through the games again. In my opinion, Sony has manipulated the hype for this console from the beginning to create this frenzy over it. The scalpers are helping make people want this machine in the worst way. Again, in my opinion and from what my eyeballs have seen, the PS5 just isn’t worth the hype and the price scalpers are asking for it. I hate thinking this way, but the PS5 isn’t the “one!” to be getting into a tizzy over. It’s an upgrade over the PS4 pro for sure, but as of now doesn’t seem like a next generation machine.
I got mine at launch now I just need a slim for travel . I take my PS5 everywhere I go and the box they give you is convenient but I’d rather it be smaller for travel for sure . Stock pops up a lot lately I’ve seen my friends are starting to get them so just keep trying !!
It doesn't deserve all the sales it's gotten as the Xbox Series X is the stronger more powerful console despite being the same price it also has better value with services like gamepass and is fully backwards computable with All legacy Xbox geenrations. Of course everyone will dickride Sony off brand name alone.
The Electronic Software Association has responded to a potential vulnerability in the E3 website, explaining that it was part of a security review.
Today the Entertainment Software Association announced the opening date of registrations for E3 2020, alongside a few hints of what gamers can expect from the show.
People who are against E3..."Are you alright?"
How can gamers be against a gaming convention? This is like our Christmas, our superball, our Oscar....
I certainly don't understand this need to take sides.
If you don't care, don't watch. If you care, enjoy.
It feels like some feel the need to validate the decision of their brand of choice not to attend. Eh.
On the press side, I feel like there's a lot of petty spitefulness (mostly about that data leak) and politics ("The ESA said things I don't like, how dare they!") involved with this whole "unload as much mud as we can" trend on E3. Personally, I don't care about that crap. I'm here for the games.
I'd hardly call still being upset you got doxxed by the ESA "petty spitefulness", man.
There are certainly fewer leaks heading up to E3 since they started doing their conference rehearsals offsite.
"How can gamers be against a gaming convention? This is like our Christmas, our superball, our Oscar...."
100% agree.
E3 is that sweet time of the year to get hyped!
"Several leading video game companies have already committed to participating in E3 2020, including Xbox, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Bethesda Softworks, SEGA, Capcom, Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive Software, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc., and Warner Bros. Games, among others."
Hell yeah! Bring it on. My body is ready! * *
Christmas is like my Christmas this is a nothing more than a game show many others happen through the year. Im not against E3 I just know its not needed and more and more are seeing that too.
Okay, but this entire industry isnt "needed". I'm not even sure what you're trying to say in your comment. Is there any gaming convention/show that's "needed"? Not really. But they make it nice and easy to keep up with announcements, gameplay demos and general gaming news, and the vast majority enjoy watching.
@TK-66
"I'm not even sure what you're trying to say in your comment."
Keep thinking about it I'm sure it will come to you eventually.
@SolidGamerX
Sorry, but your comment is not needed and more and more are seeing that too.
@TK-66
And yet here it is and you felt the NEED to respond to it. You tried to be clever but it didn't work out, oh well.
I don't think that gamers are against it. Some just aren't as excited for it as they may have been in the past. I don't really see why any gamer would be against a game conference, especially those that are known for game announcements.
Because the ESA are the villains of the industry. They are a lobby that pushes Microtransations and loot boxes, and I believe they are also in charge of the ESRB but I could be wrong with that.
As for the actual event, Last year they were so incompetent that they posted around 2000 peoples personal info on their website that attended e3.
Personally I don't care, All I ever cared about were the press conferences, and they have been getting worse each year since 2014. Was hoping for both systems to ramp up for the new consoles, but they are staying pretty mum and hype is dissipating. Hopefully whether at E3, or elsewhere Sony and MS start doing huge shows with awesome reveals because 2013 this is not.
cuz they are trying to downplay it in light of certain companies or people not being there which is stupid. E3 has always been a great event and the biggest show of the year. I am looking forward to it.
Love E3. E3 is all about the games. Looking forward to this years event.
You should probably look up some info on E3 2020, seems less about games and more about youtubers. Im still keeping an eye on it, but the plans sound weird.
@isarai
Which gaming event will more about the GAMES than E3 this year? That´s right. None.
Good luck for those companies who choosed to skip E3 to try their luck on their own with their very closed, safe and controlled enveriomment which leaves us, their fans, in the dark wondering how and when those companies intents to reveal/show something.
I rather have those sweet moment of excitement, anxiety, anticipation, hype and enjoyment once in a year by June.
"Xbox, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Bethesda Softworks, SEGA, Capcom, Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive Software, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc., and Warner Bros. Games, among others."
Don't sound like youtubers to me.
@Obscure_Observer
PAX, Gamescom, TGS etc.
@Abriel
"E3 - is reportedly proposing a radical rebranding of the show for next year, which would turn it into a "fan, media, and influencer festival".
https://www.eurogamer.net/a...
"Influencer Festival" sounds like youtubers to me. I hope im wrong and E3 is amazing, but with that info and everyone jumping ship, it doesn't sound good.
E3 is less about games than Gamescom. E3 is a press event for the industry. It is less about getting games into the hands of players and more about showing off to reporters.
So maybe wait for an answer next time before incorrectly answering your own question.
@Obscure_Observer
Those same companies skipped E3 last year to "try their luck on their own", over a hundred million consoles sold later seems it worked out just fine thanks for your concern though. FYI E3 isn't the only show the whole year so no fans are in the dark but nice try.
@mkis007
How many games are revealed at E3 vs. Gamescom? E3 is about the games, Gamescom is about the fans. The vast majority of the games that people get hands on with at Gamescom were revealed at E3.
Maybe don't answer when you don't know what you are talking about.
@solidgamerx
Holy shit, who sold 100 million consoles last year!??!? Oh wait, no... they sold 100 million consoles after they revealed it at E3. Nice try though.
I really don't get why people prefer to be drip fed reveals throughout the year. I don't mind the few reveals that happen during the big conferences (PAX, Gamescom, etc.) but I will always prefer one singular event with huge amounts of reveals that I can look forward to once per year. Just seems to me that when you drip feed stuff, the only people who are really going to see it are those hardcore, dedicated fans who scour the internet for every bit of news they can find about their plastic of choice.
Maybe E3 does need some kind of update, or maybe it is just the changing of the times and we have to accept it, just like everything else. Until then, I will always look forward to E3 and once it goes away, I can only hope something similar takes it's place.
@isarai
Youtubers help promote games and depending on the youtuber provide point of views and or opinions that help you understand the passion behind the game. I see nothing wrong with youtubers or content creators getting shine at E3. I can assure you it all come back to games.
If you like E3, enjoy it, no problem with that but don't come with double standards and criticize those persons and companies who chooses to skip E3.
I think there will be stuff to enjoy even if Sony isn't there. If not, then maybe those people are getting too hung up on their console preference. We may not get some nice tidy conference that we want, but there should still be plenty of news coming out of it all. If you take away all the spectacle, then maybe some of the actual news and announcements that go under the radar normally can get some more attention. All I really recall from last year was this narrative that Sony won without even showing up, and a couple of Square's games. Take away that console war narrative, and there should be hundreds of things to read about. We won't talk about them, because we seem to not talk about games here much, but at least the news will be out there.
Including Digital sales should be there in the future because they did indeed grow exponentially those last two year.
And there was no 'Slamming' in what ESA said.
"While they agree that the data is correct, they claim it does not include significant, growing portions of the industry."
Who or what is ESA ? They are right though .
Due to paying taxes on digital sales . I think it is going to be tough to track digital sales. Although, i am probably wrong .
I agree with the statement, however, the information regarding digital sales is not up to NPD. That's specifically up to the publisher of the game.
Sony, MS, Nintendo, Steam, Origins, Uplay, etc... all have the data of the games that sell on their distribution services, but none of them can give this information out freely without the potential threat of being sued by the publisher, and if the publishers want to keep numbers out of the media for reasons such as lack of sales, then that's entirely up to them to do, and there's nothing no one can do about it, because guessing would again open room for any kind of legal issues regardless of how petty it would be.
The only thing that can help with this is to do what mobile does and add a download counter, so you can see how many people downloaded the game, which wouldn't be 100% sure way to tell the sales, but it could help.
Software sales are up for discussion. Hardware sales are not.
