Why PlayStation VR Will Be Totally Overpriced (Just Like Oculus)

How expensive do you think the PlayStation VR will be?

not to mention that you have to factor in the cost of the PS Camera, something that the PSVR needs to work.

TorpeAlex3050d ago

And the fact that PSVR will include a separate processor to balance the workload of the system. There's no way on earth that this thing will be significantly cheaper without Sony taking a loss on the thing. The best chance they have of marketing it to the masses is to show how much less investment is required versus building a PC capable of Oculus.

Thatguy-3103050d ago

I'll say it once and I'll say it Again Sony has said that they aren't going to profit out of the hardware so they're going to take a loss on it. They will profit off software so with that in mind I'm positive it will be cheaper than oculus.

TheEnigma3133049d ago

Sony clearly said they were willing to take a loss. You you guys ignore this stuff.

Neonridr3049d ago

I have no doubt it will be cheaper, but those people who think that Sony is going to sell this thing for $300 are absolutely bonkers.

Hereiamhereibe23049d ago

@neon thats fine if they dont I just wont buy it until it is $300, I dont need VR in fact I will probably hate but who the fuck cares what other people are willing to spend?

Takwin3049d ago

ABSOLUTE MAX of $449 and is WITH CAMERA and 2 MOVE CONTROLLERS, and possibly a few small games.

It is possible they do the standalone unit for $349.

himdeel3049d ago

Yep it absolutely cannot cross $350 for just the PSVR, just the unit no Move controllers, no camera. If it's over that it's going to creep up to that $500 range.

ecchiless3050d ago

Overpriced? we dont know the cost of the development of the psvr, cost of production, etc...

So who decide what is the "right" price? or if is overpriced?

bobtheimpaler3050d ago

Your making too much sense bro.

Anyone who can't afford one is just being salty. Even if Sony make a profit off each unit it won't be big. The days of console manufacturers subsidising products to the extent that they did even 10 years ago is gone.

I might not be able to afford one at launch due to other expenses but I ain't crying about it.

andibandit3050d ago (Edited 3050d ago )

"Anyone who can't afford one is just being salty."

I think you mean "Alot of the people who can't..",

unless You really meant to generalize.

Gaming4Life19813048d ago

"Anyone who can't afford one is just being salty. "

That is total bulshit because I can afford 600 for the oculus but im not willing to drop 600 bucks on something that I think is overpriced which is my opinion.

Sony cannot price this device over the ps4 system, I just cannot see people paying more for a peripheral than the actual system.

If this device doesnt sell well on ps4 then support will ruin it and we see how sony does on alot of ps products by letting them just die off.

Vengeance11383050d ago (Edited 3050d ago )

Oh swell yet another clickbait "article". Why stop at assuming PSVR's price? why not make your next article about why the PS5 and PS6 will be overpriced!Let the non-news fly!

Don't talk about what you know nothing about.

ApocalypseShadow3050d ago (Edited 3050d ago )

Yeah. The guy is running on pure speculation and assumption.

PS4 comes with a controller built for VR. It doesn't need to be included in a bundle.he assumes that what's in the box is somehow the equivalent of an nividia gtx970 that is needed for psvr to run. He assumes that the move controllers will be forced in a bundle only.he assumes that the PS camera is somehow expensive when in reality, it sells for less than $60 and as low as $40.or that HDMI split out is somehow expensive.what is the cost of HDMI out from a tablet or phone?cheap.

For PS4 gamers, which will be around 40 million by release, all that is required is this:

Psvr
Camera
Game like no man's sky.

That's it. Because I KNOW every gamer has a pair of ear buds or headphones lying around.because I believe every gamer is probably a music listener too.

But games like no man's sky,gt,eve Valkyrie, battlezone, war thunder, ace combat, project cars,etc...DON'T require move controllers just by looking at them.

Now,all together(psvr-2moves-camera-ga me)they might hit as high as $450.but it doesn't sound like what Sony's strategy will be to sell it as bundle only with a game.especially when all these launch developers want to make their investment back.

He speculates without looking at all the possible combinations where a full bundle is not required for PS4 gamers who already have some of the components.

sereal_killer3050d ago

I think the box does mostly reprojection and unwarping the image for the screen output, not much else.

I already have the camera, 4 move controllers(since ps3) and a sony gold headset. All i want is a standalone version of PSVR. I believe they can hit the 300-400 mark for a stand alone version.

I am getting one if its at 400 or less.
I think they cant afford to sell it for more than a ps4 for the standalone version.

But time will tell

sinspirit3050d ago

You get it.

I bought a PS camera two months ago on sale for $45 because I planned on getting PSVR. I expect a standalone headset SKU for those that already have peripherals. I expect a SKU with the headset and camera. Then, I expect a SKU with the headset, camera, and Move controllers. Not every game uses Move and many already have them so they most likely won't force anyone to spend extra money.

What some people also don't notice is that Sony doesn't expect it to sell as well as some think it needs to. They are supporting it a LOT but they are doing so with the knowledge that may
be it won't break ground on the market, and yet they expect it to pick up and they plan to use it on PS5 as well.

Goldby3047d ago

@sereal_Killer. it also uprenders the images from 60 frames per second to 120

TorpeAlex3050d ago

No one who is calling the Oculus overpriced has a clue what they're talking about. They're manufacturing custom hardware and sensors for the thing, the screens are top-of-the-line quality since they'll be less than four inches from your eyes, and they're not even making significant profit off of MSRP. Quit complaining because a bleeding-edge technology is expensive; of course it is. The infrastructure and manufacturing processes are nowhere near the size of any other technology market yet. Thinking otherwise or demanding that Oculus take a loss on each unit sold is profoundly stupid.

drokk3050d ago

Exactly, It's the same price or cheaper than any GOOD 1440p 120hz monitor available, and I expect the PSVR will be,"in the ballpark", sorry couldn't help that one, fairly close to the price of the Rift considering the screen is better and it includes an external processor.

Rimeskeem3050d ago

I will gladly pay 500 for it if it comes with the camera and move. They should have bundles as well. 400 for the VR itself and 450 with a combination of either the camera or the move.

I can finally play Half Life Alyx.

mariopasta60d ago

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.

crazyCoconuts59d ago

be careful not to sprain your... tongue pronouncing those pronouns

Profchaos59d ago

I'm excited for that to plus I can try fallout 4 VR always wanted to play that

crazyCoconuts59d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

DaReapa59d ago

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.
