Playstation 3 40GB Bids Adieu, Only 80GB Versions on Sale At Sony

As Gizmodo reported back in mid July, Sony's finally bid farewell to the 40GB PS3, leaving just the 80GB versions on sale at Sony Style, ending the on-again, off-again 80GB debate.

On a side note, it looks like the ps3 could possibly be having shortages or is sold out. Both sku's are currently back ordered at GS.

Yeah, the MGS4 bundle is going to be $500 but the newer 80gb that isn't the bundle is going to be $400.

For the same price as the 40GB now, you will get double the hard drive and a DualShock 3. For $100 there is the 80GB MGS4 bundle which includes Backwards Compatibility, Media Slots and 4 USBs instead of 2.

This 80gb is basically a 40gb with a bigger HD. No backwards playability with PS2 titles.

Actually it does matter. I only had the option of getting the 40 gig, and I've never owned a PS2. I would love to be able to play some of the PS2 classics without having to buy an old system, but I can't.

Don't get me wrong, my PS3 gets PLENTY of use, but I'd still love to be able to play some of the classics..

I think that 360 has 3 in production. The good side to having more than one sku, is that a person can choose what they want without having to pay for hardware that they don't need. By comparison, a person without an hdtv or broadband is paying quiet a bit for a ps3.

I think Sony's intentions when creating the video store weren't to compete with xbox or merely entertain their fanbase, but to have something to walk hand-in-hand with the home tvs. But yes you're absolutely right. Good thing Sony is a big supporter behind third party products, or I may have had to go the xbox route and pay 120 bucks for 120 gigs.

Uhm the 360 owners don't have forced installation of about 5GB each.

That's why 20GB can be enough, because indeed, deleting old video's and demo's you don't play ever again in the end isn't a problem.

But a problem is when a 40GB PS3 runs out of space because of forced install just after couple of games: you need to fork out another 100 bucks to be able to still just use your console with new games with more installations. Which makes the price of that PS3 400+100=500 bucks. The 80GB isn't even enough in the long run.

Exactly. You don't play anymore. But 40GB of space, with 5GB on a game to install, makes you have about 6 games + some video's/music and you're out of space. I own about 40 games for my 360, and I still play a lot of those.

Not all games "force" you to install, most of them are optional.
And the reason for installs is NOT because of drive speed its because the game runs much smother if its from the HDD

cmon mary boy.. stop saying 20 GB.. when every one knows is 13 GB. Also the 40 GB only has like 36 or 37 available.. the harsh truth. I believe there are only around 3 or 4 games with that much installs.. others like uncharted do not have one. Oh and games like warhawk and GT5-P are completely on the hard drive. So interesting to say the least. Oh and that 100 dollars extra you speek of.. gets you a 250 GB hard drive. nice eh.

When the PS3 hits 300 bucks, comes in white, with a Dual Shock 3 in the package, and a HD cable (because real HD doesn't start with composite cables Sony), a HDD large enough for its life cycle of installing games, Home implemented and the games that are interesting (read: LBP and God of War III) I would buy a PS3.

WHich exactly? I have bought the 360 and haven't bought 'dedicated' peripherals. I think its worse you have to pay a higher price on the PS3 that includes stuff I don't want. I don't want WiFi, I want the most reliable cable to be sure to cut out any lag caused by WiFi

Uhm they do. And even after a paid period, it becomes free.

They don't anymore, old Sony fan fud. Since more then a year extra heatsink on the GPU + 65nm CPU works. I have 2 x 360's and they run fine.

It matters more to me that the drive is fast, not so slow as PS3 seen in many, many game videos with forced installs to just bring it up to the 360 speed. The games are nr. 1 for me.

Because its not needed. Sony pushed it in the PS3 to force the industry their earning BR technology. 99,9% of all games fit on a DL-DVD. You're paying Sony extra for including the drive.

Does it matter for me as a customer? Nope. I get the best games on my system and the best multiplatform versions. I am happy no matter what MS pays to who exactly.

Because its a premium service. Why are you paying for cable TV instead of watching only free to air channels? You have a gimped online system, some games have trophies, others haven't, cross game chat and invites gimped.

Its behind the TV. I don't see it. Does it matter? Nope. Is it important? Nope. When the power adapter breaks down I only have to change that one not the console. I see it as a plus.

So the 80GB drive cost them the same as the 40GB or 60GB drive. So they pass on the benefit to the consumer. By the end of this gen there will be one PS3 SKU - 320GB or something like that. Same specs - just bigger hd.
