Will Oculus Rift be Obsolete/Fail after PlayStation VR release?

Facebook has had a great financial year in 2015. However, the tables may turn in 2016. Oculus Rift and PSVR are set to head out against each other - but will one survive and the other fail? Does Oculus Rift have the technological know how on how to survive against the experienced Sony? Amazon tried to enter the phone market and failed miserably. Facebook tried the same. We don't know how consumers will react next year but in most likelihood it will be in the Playstation VR's favour.

FasterThanFTL13082d ago

No because PC. The real question is will PS4 be enough to do the PSVR justice or we will have to wait till PS5 to see the true potential of PSVR.

Cupid_Viper_33082d ago

Ugh WTF kind of question is that???? Why on earth would the Oculus Rift be rendered obsolete by PSVR?

These two devices will mostly be complementing each other given that they're the biggest two names in VR at the moment and will both be considered a leader in that market. Sort of like what Apple and Android did for the smart phone market in some aspect.

Testfire3082d ago

The best thing that could happen is if both companies work together to make both devices successful. We need the VR space to be as big as possible to attract devs and publishers. We shouldn't be rooting for one device to knock out the other.

donthate3082d ago

I would say PS VR is the unknown here. Oculus unless they screw up majorily on price, they are going to be fine. The DK2 was pretty good already and PC with GTX970 requirement and the open platform should be great for VR.

PS4 + VR though.... That is going to be hard for the pixel counters.

joeorc3080d ago

And the ironic thing is AMD & Crytek made a SDK & Development kit that works with

HTC & Valve Vive HMD
Facebook & Microsoft OCulusRift
Sony Playstation VR

Liquid VR made by AMD and with Crytek making a dedicated VR game engine.

So how could it be made Obsolete?

1) it has not really been completed tools & development like all the VR HMD's are still being developed for mass consumer roll out.
2) they just started just like all the new VR HMD headsets.the market has not really been established just yet for the new VR HMDs on the consumer roll out yet.

At least 2 years from now to even get an an ideas on Market penetrating, software sell through, hell even NPD market sell through tracking has yet to follow VR HMD sell though yet.

And we are getting Questions a out Obsolete VR HMD headsets already?

PurpHerbison3082d ago (Edited 3082d ago )

I'm scared that now just isn't the time for VR across the entire board, but they have to start somewhere. With that said, I worry that PSVR will either crash and burn or not do nearly enough justice to fund future improved versions of VR.

JackStraw3082d ago

Except every hands-on review goes against what you just said.

donthate3082d ago

I wouldn't worry if PS VR failed. Oculus and likely HTC Vive will do just fine on PC, and next generation when it begins to be more mainstream, Nintendo, MS or Sony will pick it up.

ABizzel13082d ago (Edited 3082d ago )

I can't stand clickbait BS like this.

How can PSVR affect Oculus in any way, when both are on different platforms. If both were only on PS4 then by all means that would make sense.

The only people effected by this are those who have a powerful enough gaming PC, and a PS4, which is more than likely a few million consumers, which is a lot, but small in the grand scheme of things (+30m install base each (PS4 and gaming PC's with GTX 970+ power according to Steam polls)).

This is a stupid click bait article. Neither's failure or success is a direct response of the other.

@FasterThanFTL1

PSVR works as advertised and it's a good VR experience, but without question the PS5 VR (if it has it) is going to be an even better experience for the simple fact the display is going to be significantly better, and more than likely the PS5 camera as well (and hopefully more features like built-in 3D audio, built-in micro fans, built in processors & wireless, and potential AR support).

But PS4's VR is already good as is, although it's more than likely a stepping stone for what PS5 VR which will be the real evolution VR gaming needs (especially since that means developers will have had 3 - 4 years VR experience by then).

JackStraw3082d ago

Why do people on n4g love using the term "clickbait" so much?

Forogveled3082d ago

^ Because this is clickbait, not news whatsoever.

uth113082d ago

Different markets.

I think the real question is whether the rift or vive dominated in PC vr

psvr3082d ago

oculus rift risk is trying to make a product user friendly when it hasn't had any market experience

donthate3082d ago

So?

Plenty of services/products has done well without any product or market experience. Also, Oculus has released both DK1 and DK2 to consumers....

Herbalistic3082d ago (Edited 3082d ago )

They aren't in competition being as the headsets target different markets

Testfire3082d ago

They are a bit in competition though. For people that own both OR capable PCs and PS4s these consumers may choose one over the other based on support.

LexHazard793080d ago

True I guess, personally if I had both I would go with the Rift. Its gonna be an overall better VR experience with the extra horsepower.

They are a bit in competition though. For people that own both OR capable PCs and PS4s these consumers may choose one over the other based on support.

At this point I tend to look at being in less direct competition, but in direct methods to Grow VR HMD technology to become more mainstream as new ways for consumers to experience Software be that games or Application software.

AMD & Crytek Liquid VR is a standardized SDK & Development kit for VR.

But unlike many seem to think, it was made not just for One VR HMD it already supports many and Playstation VR & OCulus Rift & HTC Vive all are Supported by the very same Liquid VR SDK & Development Kit.

The fact that the Tools are already in the hands well ahead of the VR HMDs commercial roll out of their VR HMD headsets is a really good sign.

Sony's playstation VR platform does not just have an only SDK & Development Kit direct only from Sony that supports the PlayStation VR. The Liquid VR which is 3rd party already supports the playstation VR HMD headset also.

So you do not need Sony only development kit for Playstation VR. You can use Liquid VR SDK & development kits.

psvr3082d ago

Yes but facebook is just too invading and everyone knows once you put that oculus rift on your head they will literally be selling anything off they can get hold of.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers25d ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken25d ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Take my social security and bank account numbers too! Here’s a picture of my wife and our address.

phoenixwing25d ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H925d ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola25d ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn66925d ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle25d ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg26d ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos26d ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

I think if used correctly it could work well

jambola26d ago

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me
