AMD announces HDR support for gaming, will bring FreeSync to HDMI

AMD is bringing FreeSync to HDMI, meaning monitors can add support for the standard without adding another port. They’re also working to bring High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology to gaming by offering support for the technology in the latest Radeon drivers.

Wow freesync over HDMI this is big news also the addition of HDR AMD is on a Roll lately.

Zeref3101d ago

Hopefully Microsoft picks them up soon.

fr0sty3101d ago

Won't happen. They don't need Microsoft.

“Existing Radeon R9 300 Series GPUs will be compatible with HDR displays in 2016 for gaming, while our 2016 GPUs will extend support to both gaming and movies"

Gonna look great with my 390 that I just picked up yesterday for a new build. Seems like AMD has turned a corner. Lets hope they continue to improve and innovate, we need the competition.

They are indeed, I am watching AMD closely again now (I jumped ship to NVidia last year after being AMD for more than 10 years, was AMD's sucky drivers that made me jump ship). I am hoping they can start challenging NVidia again as they did offer the best bang for buck (well until I decided to look for a new card the 970 was that when I bought)hardware.

SteamPowered3101d ago

Competition please. I really hope this brings down the price of Gsync. I dream of a world where almost every monitor has freesync/gsync capabilities. The benefits are amazing. Bye bye Vsync!

Elit3Nick3101d ago

Nice, I've been gaming with my 390 for a few months now and it eats most games for breakfast

Bimkoblerutso3101d ago

Man, I really wish they would have called it something different than HDR. "HDR" can refer to like three different things at this point.

Lon3wolf3101d ago

It can but I automatically think of High Dynamic Range when the HDR term is used.

Nivekki3101d ago

Yeah same here, after having the term drummed into my head for years.

Pandamobile3101d ago

HDR is HDR. It's been a term in the computer graphics industry for a long, long time.

Bimkoblerutso3101d ago

I know, but it can refer to a photographic technique, a graphical rendering technique, and now it's a contrast-enhancing method for digital imaging.

The HDR they are referring to now is not the rendering technique they started using a little after Half-Life 2 came out.

Wonder if freesync can be added to consoles? That would make them feel like high end PC's at 30fps even tho they are not.

The idea over HDMI screams Firmware upgrade for XB1 & PS4.

darksky3101d ago

Depends on whether the gpu in the consoles can do adaptive sync. If it could then fairly straight forward for AMD to enable it and the end user only has to buy a freesync monitor or tv.

I suspect it won't though since the gpu is based on the older GCN 1.0 cores which doesn't support Freesync for pc gpu's.

SteamPowered3101d ago

Not really worth it for consoles. Its almost the opposite of why it works for PC: consoles are already locked in at 30/60fps and the refresh rate of avg TV is 60hz. While limiting fps isn't exactly the same as Vsync, if your rig churns out 60+fps, then you will notice quite a bit more screen tearing than if you were in the same ballpark of 60fps/60hz. Since consoles do 60fps and below, your tv should refresh often enough that it will catch the images your gpu produces.

Consoles aren't really known for screen tearing to be an issue in the first place. At least not any games I've played lately.

neocores3101d ago

-.- Awesome i got a 270x and not supported. -.- If they had this in mind they should have included with these cards as well.

dreadz743101d ago

should have got a r9 290 but i think 270 may get support to via Display port to hdmi 2.0 adapter from club 3d releasing next week.
