The Relentless Twitter Campaign to Save Shenmue Continues

Retrovolve writes: "When Twitter launched in 2006, most gamers assumed that the Shenmue series was dead in the water. The last game in the series, Shenmue II, had released back in 2001, shortly after Sega exited the console market. The big-budget franchise had earned rave reviews, but it also cost Sega a small fortune to develop. Between Sega’s financial woes and the years of radio silence, a third game seemed all but impossible."

I love the passion of this fanbase. Our community is awesome!

But the "#SaveShenmue" campaign has moved to help get the HD remasters of the first 2 games released before Shenmue III comes out in 2017. There's still time - and Shenmue fans know all about time.

Playing only Shenmue 3 and not 1&2, is like seeing Return of the Jedi, without having watched A New Hope & Empire Strikes back first.

They NEED to be played in order.

The devs seem to be relying to much on fan donations, when really if they approached the rite corp, they could get a backer. If they are in trouble then they should do that. I wished it were coming to xb1, microsoft could fund the project in an instant, it would be an opportunity for both ms and the devs to find out if it could succeed on xb1, im sure it could. I would buy it in an instant, 1 because i enjoyed the old games, 2 because it would be a gamble for the devs and ms, more so ms because theyd have to pay a lump sum which could help the dev out and 3 because its a jap game and id like to see more of the japanese titles on xb1.

I doubt it will happen but i could only hope n pray, but sometimes you just have to take a risk..

djplonker3090d ago

Microsoft had its chance to pick ot up and fully fund it but sony have beat them to it and there is little to no chance of ms being involved at any stage of the development now.

Herbalistic3090d ago (Edited 3090d ago )

It wouldn't make sense for MS to get involved being as the Xbox fan base aren't really huge on games like Shenmue

Jmanzare3089d ago (Edited 3089d ago )

Sony isn't fully funding the game it's on kickstarter

ScaReCrow903089d ago

People do forget Shenmue came out on xbox but never on playstation.
It is funny when this sort of thing happens no one crys out in anger but when microsoft does it everyone is angry.

I wish the double standards would stop.

djplonker3089d ago

Well technically shenmue's orginal home is the dreamcast and not the xbox but I kinda see your point.

DigitalRaptor3082d ago (Edited 3082d ago )

There is one reason Shenmue II came out on Xbox, and it's nothing to do with the big guys at Microsoft wanting to support the future of Shenmue. It was because Peter Moore (who was at SEGA at the time) was gunning for a job at Microsoft, due to SEGA being a sinking ship at that point in time. He made deals to bring some SEGA IPs over to the Xbox. That alone was sleazy enough of him to sell out Shenmue, and the deal meant that North American Dreamcast owners couldn't play Shenmue II - not without having to go out of their way and be lucky enough that they could import the European DC version to play.

So yeah... when MS is tied up in these things, people have reason to be angry, because it ends up being detrimental to the passionate fanbase. Look at Rise of the Tomb Raider. "How to sink a franchise 101" by Microsoft & Square Enix.

In this case, Yu Suzuki went to all of these companies. Phil Spencer flat out refused to save Shenmue. Nintendo had the offer too. Sony had the offer and many guys at Sony are also friends with Suzuki-san and were clearly more passionate about helping him make his life's work and passion project continue. They offered their support for his Kickstarter campaign on stage at E3, and are fully funding the PS4 port of the PC sequel that they are making, in return for exclusive marketing rights for when the PS4 version comes out in 2017.

No double standards here, unfortunately for your argument.

I just realized the Shenmue 3 campaign is still going via Paypal! Hoping for a big push by end of year and announcement of remasters from Sega.

Never say never, I really didn't expect to ever see Space Marine 2 and 12 years later its almost here.
So there is still hope for all these games.

Chocoburger100d ago

I've completed 5 of the games on the list, but the author forgot to include Advent Rising. It was supposed to be a trilogy, but it bombed hard, and the two sequels never got made. It was Mass Effect, a console generation before Mass Effect.

The game is buggy and unpolished, it needed a few more months of development, but the potential was there. At the end of the game, you have all these super abilities, I remember the stomp attack that created a shockwave being especially powerful.

shinoff218399d ago

I personally think days gone will recieve some sort of sequel at some point. I'm personally also hoping it's not the rumored multiplayer online stuff. I'd think most that enjoyed it would rather thisnto.

Knightofelemia99d ago

Sony needs to dust off Sly Cooper and Days Gone so needs a sequel two of my favorite Sony titles. Bulletstorm I love great game wish it also got a sequel. And I wish Namco would finally give Enslaved a sequel another great game.

Dragon's Dogma and XCOM 2 are the best deals. The rest of the games are still overpriced. I would say 8.99 is good for AC: Origins, but you need to put $10 more into MTs to avoid the grind that slows down the story. So, the game is actually 18.99.

It's not on this list, but Pathfinder: Kingmaker is only $9.99. This is a deal if you have a current gen. consoles, as it runs poorly on prev. gen.

hangdang712d ago

I beat AC origins without grinding or spending any money on MTX?

anast712d ago

I had to grind for side missions. So, did many other people.

Has anyone been able to login in to the ps store on ps5 I haven't been able to in days and my network is good.

RedDevils712d ago

Reset or shutdown your PS5. I always can go login to PS5, in fact just a moment ago.

HeliosHex711d ago

Hey thanks again. Although the shutdown/reset didn't work i found that resetting the mdm and hub did the trick. I use a Lan network instead of wifi. In case anyone has a similar setup and problem.

RedDevils711d ago

I forgot to mention about the router reset, that usually do the trick when it come to network problems happen with iphone/android. btw np
