The charts are back - and this time they are digital

At last! The UK games industry has some digital download charts.

UKIE has signed agreements with leading providers of mobile and digital sales data, and MCV will be printing the results.

VenomUK3098d ago (Edited 3098d ago )

Great news!
As the digital market grows it is important and necessary that we have sales data so we can know which products are really selling the most.
It will also be able to reflect surprise digital hits such as Valkyria Chronicles re-release on Steam and sales of games on PlayStation and Xbox such as Ori and the Blind Forest.

As GFK will continue the physical games chart it will be a must to be able to compare and combine it with the digital. The reason being that, for example, Assassin's Creed Syndicate may be in the top ten physical chart but not appear in the top ten of the digital. This could indicate an issue with pricing or that there is less choice in bricks & mortar stores. A digital chart will also help with discoverability of smaller indie titles and games featured in flash sales. Although SuperData will face challenges, this is a big step forward!

Sounds like a bunch of commie gobbledygook

VenomUK1776d ago (Edited 1776d ago )

Whilst I wouldn’t describe myself as one on a first date or in a job interview I play games so I am a ‘gamer!‘ There is now a growing tendency of people telling others they can’t use the perfectly fine word because their political activism makes them think it is exclusionary. They are wrong, gamer (yes it sounds a bit nerdy!) has been the standard term for decades.

Inzo1777d ago

So we are not allowed to say "this game is addictive" anymore? Some needs to create a safe space for gamers now because I am going to flip out with all these mean words!

Look, I understand where she is coming from and that she doesnt want organisations like WHO branding gaming as a mental disorder but DAMN! is this the sensitivity level we have hit in 2019? I am so glad I am not a millennial.

Slappy McGee1776d ago

Gen Z (kids born after 1997, the millennials kids) are way worse. It's only going to go down the sensitivity slope from here until some group grows skin thicker than a wet piece of one plus toilet paper.

I was watching a 1979 interview with Patrick McGoohan talking about The Prisoner, and he said that progress is the biggest threat to mankind, or words to that effect. I wonder what he would say if he were alive today...

It would help if this notion of gaming being new went away. First gaming console came out near 50 years ago. Before that, computers had video games. No other form of entertainment has gone through so long a period of growing pains to be accepted as something not for children. Movies started as an adult medium. TV was as well. Radio was for all ages. All were accepted within years of coming to the world.

Would help if people in the industry would not treat it's customers as if they were children.

Maybe instead of saying that gamers and the industry needs to tip toe around to avoid criticism, stand up and have some balls and say that all these people that would attack the industry or judge gamers are judgemental clueless idiots. There's nothing wrong with liking video games. There's nothing wrong with the industry making adult games or saying what's on their minds.

This is like people who talk down on people who smoke pot, while chugging their white wine.

Maybe Jo Twist should grow a backbone.

Knushwood Butt1776d ago

I agree with her about, 'addictive', because certain people will take it at face value, but I'm a gamer.

AnubisG1776d ago

🤦‍♂️ these people man......you have to be careful what you say or they will scream and shout really hard and throw tantrums.

Some games are addictive. Get used to it Jo Twist.

These people constantly want to change the meaning of words and ban words they think is offensive and replace them. But eventually the replacement word will become offensive and that needs to be replaced too and if it was up to these people, it would continue to eternity.

GTAV tops UK physical game sales chart for first half of 2017

UK video game sales tracker Chart-Track does not publicly reveal sales figures - it leaves that to video game publishers. But the Entertainment Retailers Association does, and in its latest report for the first half of 2017, it revealed the top six best-selling physical games in the UK so far.

The behemoth that is Grand Theft Auto 5 is the UK's best-selling video game so far this year, with 334,280 physical copies sold. That's a pretty incredible return for a game that first came out four years ago. Who in the UK is still to buy the thing?

Horizon Zero Dawn outsold Fifa ? Didn't see this coming. Rather impressive.

ModiJi2497d ago

Only game in the list that is an exclusive and only on one platform. Makes the success even more impressive. Fantastic Job GG, can't wait to play the expansion this fall.

boomtube19872497d ago (Edited 2497d ago )

Multiplatform games are what 95% of gamers play. No exclusives are better than CoD, GTA and Fifa. Those are big free that a modern console must have.

corroios2497d ago

But, but, but SP games are dying... less and less impact. Amazing job GG. High hopes for your next game!!!!
