Retro Review: Garou: Mark of the Wolves

Grant Patterson writes:
"While Capcom created multiple famous fighting franchises, most other companies only dipped their toes into the water; even Midway stuck with Mortal Kombat as its sole fighting franchise until the release of War Gods, which was essentially Mortal Kombat 4 with a different coat of paint. With multiple sequels and multiple franchises released in such a short span of time, no other company could seem to match Capcom's output — save for one. That company was Shin Nihon Kikaku, better known to the world as SNK, and their rivalry with Capcom created constant innovation and competition in the genre.

Some say that the genre reached its peak in 1999 with the arcade release of Street Fighter III: Third Strike. However, I beg to differ. I believe the peak happened elsewhere that very same year, and I believe that SNK finally achieved its goals and made a game that was more fun to play than any Street Fighter title before or since. That game was the final entry into...

The real crime is how far SNK has fallen and a sequel to this game was half way done but never completed and released.

GrantPatterson3087d ago

So agreed. With how awesome KOF13 was, I would hope they'd eventually get around to bringing this back.

Doesn't seem like that's the case.

XtraTrstrL3087d ago

I do remember finding this the most fun of all the SNK roms years ago. I'm not sure I played this one on consoles or in arcades or wherever it originally released. It is a fun game with great movesets for the characters.

She's cool, but so is Khushnood.

Hoffmann3087d ago

R.I.P

Fatal Fury
Art of Fighting
Samurai Shodown
Last Blade
Ninja Masters

and so many other awesome game series by SNK of the nineties :(

Chevalier3087d ago

Don't forget King of Fighters and World Heroes.

Hoffmann3087d ago

Didnt list them because KOF is not dead..and World Heroes was not made by SNK. They only bought the IP around a decade ago

Chevalier3087d ago

I see. Well hopefully something happens for those old classics.

Hoffmann3087d ago

Yeah..let's never give up the hope.

Kyosuke_Sanada3087d ago

Don't forget Metal Slug, Shock Troopers 2nd Squad, Robot Army.....Geez the lists goes on.

One of the few Dreamcast games I bought. I made sure to snatch it up when I noticed it was on the Switch. I don't know what made this game resonate with me but I love it. I barely touch 2D fighters anymore unless it's to boot this gem up.

OKAY! FIRST ONE WHO APPROVED THIS!

I’m really looking forward to this game!

Redrex7000822d ago

that sad not that your looking forward to the game
but the fact they're talking about the season pass
and the game not even out yet smh

CrimsonWing69822d ago

Yea, I hear ya', but that's par for the course for fighting games. If they sold gangbusters this might not be as prevalent, but this isn't anything new since the Xbox 360/PS3 generation. Plus, I don't mind giving them a few extra dollars to support them.

Not too bad. Lost Planet is a series Id like to see get a reboot. And i have not played Mark of the Wolves since the DC. Great fighter though.

HankHill1010d ago

First month in a long time that GWG is better than PS+ imo. I'm sure Sony will step it up next month and hopefully Microsoft does too.

Father__Merrin1010d ago

Not too bad but what ever comes out I never get the time to complete any of them. I more look forward to the back compat as they are for keeps.

BLAKHOODe1010d ago

Darksiders 3 has been on PS+ before. But I'm going to give this month to Xbox.. just barely. Still a weak month from both companies, but probably the best Xbox lineup in a long time.

autobotdan1010d ago

Garou Greatest fighting game of all time

Deathdeliverer1010d ago (Edited 1010d ago )

I wouldn’t go that far. It’s definitely top 20 though.

autobotdan1010d ago

The best there is, the best there ever was, the best there ever will be

Deathdeliverer1010d ago

Who used to say that?!?! I could easily google it but noooo….. Did Triple H used to say that? The Miz?

Deathdeliverer1010d ago

The hitman hart! Sure did 😂🤣 I’m so lame cause that was my favorite wrestler as a kid!

autobotdan1010d ago

Yeah he had some of the funniest wresting quotes. So memorable. I miss the 1990's when wresting was fun to watch
