Microsoft screwed up with Xbox One, but now it's time to buy

It's fine to be down on the Xbox One. I'm down on it. Most of the people I know who are into games are down on it. Microsoft followed one of the best consoles of all time with an underpowered, overpriced, oversized box that lost out to the PS4 from before day one. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy an Xbox One over a PS4. The PS4 has more games and it runs multi-platform games better. It is, quite rightly, the default console to own this generation.

But I think it's now worth owning an Xbox One too.

I'd recommend the Xbox One over the PS4 especially if you like competitive shooters like Halo 5

Some of the best games this gen are Halo 5, Sunset Overdrive, Ori and the Blind Forest, Forza Horizon 2, and Rise of the Tomb Raider ( timed)

Foehammer3096d ago

Agree

The X1 also has no competition when it comes to Racing Sims like Forza 5, highest rated racer this gen.

There's been a great stream of exclusive racers every year, Forza 4, Forza Horizon 2 and the aforementioned Forza 5.

To say nothing about the lightning fast UI, external HDD support and Backwards Compatibility.

Gazondaily3096d ago (Edited 3096d ago )

"The X1 also has no competition when it comes to Racing Sims like Forza 5, highest rated racer this gen. "

Well not yet anyway. In terms of racers and shooters, yes the Xbox is definitely superior at the moment. With GT out later, then Sony may regain 'the throne' when it comes to exclusive racers on the PS4.

But now if you can, I strongly recommend getting the X1 if you have a PS4- it already has some great games and next year looks impressive.

It depends on your tastes mind you. If you're mostly playing multiplats or predominantly fan of SP games, get the PS4.

Wallstreet373096d ago (Edited 3096d ago )

Lighting fast ui? lol We been there done that. Faster installs and downloads, we got that! Shareplay feature we got that, best controller that comes with system for 60 we got that! Non clunky UI we got that! and hold up!!!! let me copy and paste lol

lol we good. Killzone SF may have been marked down due to its sp (which is funny because Halo 5 didnt generally get marked down for its weak sp but) but Killzone has a great mp, one of the best playing and looking. We have Bloodborne which is the highest rated next gen exclusive, Drive Club which keeps evolving and has set the graphical bar way high! and greta games like Until Dawn, Resogun, TLOU Remaster, MLB The Show and many others!

Rise of Tomb Raider, although fans like to act like it is an exclusive and tout it around as a reason to own an Xbone is very poor reason as you mentioned because its timed. We will have SF5 soon, Uncharted, Wild, Horizons and alot of good other exclusives that arent timed but exclusives. I could mention Dreams, No Man sky and others but i wont get into that.

Hell looking at what we have and whats in store imo Ps4 line up has no competition in terms of variety, quality and substance. You want shooters? We got them, TPS? We got them, Racers? We got them, Innovative/new ips? Yeah we got them!

NatureOfLogic_3096d ago

No thanks, PS4 is the must have console this gen.

Just. Let. That. Sink. In.

xHeavYx3096d ago

"especially if you like competitive shooters like Halo 5"
And for people who like variety and games through the year, I'd recommend a PS4,

donthate3096d ago (Edited 3096d ago )

heavy:

and variety and lots of major exclusives is scheduled for next year on Xbox One. Consider:

* Quantum Break
* ReCore
* Halo Wars 2
* Gears of War 4
* Crackdown 3
* Forza Horizon 3

... and lots more I can't even remember, because there is so many!

You also have a great backlog of exclusives to choose from on Xbox One in addition to all the multi-platform games. You also get monthly feature updates, backwards compatible games, and Elite controller. Games with Gold also gives you Xbox 360 BC games free for Xbox One as well, so that is 4 games a month. It is also the only console you can get EA Access on.

I would say the Xbox One offers compelling value for consumers right now and into the future as the prices keep getting lower, and more and more features and services are added and so much games are being added at a rapid pace.

Fatdrinkofwater3096d ago (Edited 3096d ago )

Wallstreet

Whats this 'we' ???

Honestly some of you act like its a cult or the church of ps4. Get a grip! Its a games console that plays games and so is xbox one and so is the wii u.

Can you play 360 games on ps4? Can you play halo 5 and quantum break on ps4?

Can you play bloodborne and uncharted 4 on xbox one?

NOOOOOOO because they play different games. Who would have thought?

If your too cheap or stinjy to get more than one console then thats on you but quit acting like literally EVERYTHING is best on ps4.

xHeavYx3096d ago

@Donthate
Nice list of games that haven't launched.
The rest is just uninteresting PR.

If you're looking for a Bungie shooter experience on PS4 you have Destiny, the pvp in that game is solid.

DLConspiracy3096d ago

"We"? Speak for yourself.

Perhaps someone might ALSO want to buy an Xbox One. Since not everyone is against playing games they can't play on PS4.

What boggles the mind is that even though PS4 is blowing the sales for xbox one away people still find it necessary to make the xbox one seem like a worthless console or act defensive. You've won the console war man. Now let's play games for Christ's sake. Don't let the post traumatic console war stress get ya down.

stiggs3096d ago

@Wallstreet37

It always makes me laugh when people use the term "we" when they are referring to something they have no tangible association with like a sports team or a video game console.

Your favorite teams wins an important game and you exclaim "we did it!" No, you didn't do anything. You watched a bunch of other people accomplish their goals while basking in unmerited grandeur.

In the case of video game consoles it's even more asinine. "Fans" of a certain console will say "We have this... We sold this many... We won this award..."

Again, just no. You're not a prestigious member of an all exclusive club. You're not an integral member of the design, merchandising, or publishing team for these companies. All you did was simply purchase a specific consumer electronics device. Congratulations at being a consumer.

I realize that the term "we" is not intended to be taken literally and it may used as a way to support your console of choice. But that doesn't make it any less childish or idiotic.

DashArrivals3096d ago

I'll personally never buy an Xbox One ever and I have more than enough money. PS4 caters to every need I have in gaming, and it always has. Now with PS VR around the corner, I would recommend people buy a PS4.

I totally agree. Playstation has always been all I've ever needed and more. The backlog of games I have to play is massive. Now with PS VR around the corner, I would advise people to steer clear of Xbox One if you have to only buy a single console. That's my suggestion and my opinion. Over 30 million PS4's have been sold and growing and more than doubling the competition. I'm not an investor but I'm also not foolish enough to think that is has no damned impact for my console of choice and the titles that will be coming to the PS4 by 1st party and 3rd party. I can't wait for VR, day 1 buy for me.

It would have to take something really out of this world for me to actually pay money for a Xbox One.

Wallstreet373096d ago (Edited 3096d ago )

With me i dont forget things so that RROD fiasco they tried to cover up until taken to court and that anticonsumer bs and lies they came with this gen just really turned me off to them. Plus we have generally the better multiplats and the games that interest me. I could care less for Halo and Forza especially with so many choices out there for each of those genres.

If i can get it for like 225 i migth bite and i say might!!!

All that bs about better online experience, dedis on some games, etc imo is bs. Been playing COD Blk Ops 3 just fine with hardly any lag on my ps4, Killzone mp was also really good for me, as well as AW and other games.

tinynuggins3096d ago

Huh? They didn't cover it up. They got right out in front and made it right. Quit making up lies.

PFFT3096d ago

Kinda like Sony tried to cover up the YLOD. And yes that was a wide spread problem NOT as big as the RROD but still pretty big.

NotAFanboyyy3096d ago

Cover it up? They spent billions extending warranties and replacing faulty consoles. What about Sony not disclosing the PSN breach for nearly a month. Give me a break.

GamingIVfun3096d ago (Edited 3096d ago )

@tinynuggins

They totally denied how big the RROD problem was for a year and a half and did not admit it until their was multiple lawsuits brought against them (look it up on the internet before calling someone a lyer, better yet stop being one yourself). They did not offer an extended guaranty until a year and a half after release, even then they played down how many consoles were failing. There was a design flaw in the original release of the Xbox 360 that made it prone to failure and over heating.

The YLOD on Playstaion 3 was never anywhere near as big as the RROD problem. Plenty of articles and stories on the internet talking about the RROD. Most of the YLOD problem mentioned were in forums like this. Trust me if there was a huge problem with YLOD on Playstation 3, Playstation fans would have been all over it, Playstation fans are very vocal, even when it comes to problems with Sony and Playstation, they don't pretend everything is rosy like the Microsoft Xbox fans do (not reffering to everyone, you know who I'm talking about).

I feel the same about the ps4. Eventually there will be something that drives me to get one, but if uncharted gets similar reviews to tomb raider it will no longer be my driving force, definitely killzone and driveclub don't push it to me, nor do interactive movies as I play a lot of those on Xbox already (D4, Blues and bullets, tell tale games ect) and resolution difference isn't something that will do it either. Eventually i will get a PS4, just depends on when.

Ps: Until the price of the system goes below launch price in Canada (launched at $399, but right how after price cut its $429) I'm not gonna buy it. If MS didn't have to raise the price on their system due to the low Canadian dollar Sony should not have had to as well

But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

Master Chief Became More Than A Machine In 343's Halo

In Halo 4, 5, and Infinite, Master Chief became a more nuanced, human character.

In spite of the Halo series’ struggles, 343 deserves praise for adding nuance and characterisation to the ever-beating heart of Halo - The Master Chief. Playing through Infinite, it's abundantly clear that the events of the current and previous trilogies have irrevocably changed the iconic hero. He’s no longer the ‘blank slate’ that was previously presented by Bungie. He’s a fatigued, damaged and fallible protagonist, and one who is meandering through currents of grief, while reveling in his newfound agency. Giving the Chief a compelling and meaningful voice was no small feat, and 343 should be proud of that victory.

This article completely misses part of the appeal of the original iteration of character in the original game trilogy. It was the Chief and Cortana vs an entire alien collective. The blank slate Bungie displayed in their games was genius, he was an mysterious hero a wide audience could identify with because he wasn't as clearly defined as most characters.

The books added a lot of lore and backstory but most Halo players just want a fun game with exposition that doesn't get in the way of gameplay, it's why the Cortana level in Halo 3 was derided.

Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty.

BandarHub423d ago

A lot of people give the 343 version of Master Chief a lot of slack.
But Fundamentally he is still the same character, he just has a couple more dialogues. He has not changed in terms of attitude.
"Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty."
And that's what he has done at the end of the day, he did his duty. Watch his partner die, and was ready to destroy the weapon in Halo infinite....he is still the same soilder that everyone remembers

Halo Infintes one was a nice balance between both.

slate91423d ago

Chief and the halo franchise became a joke under 343

Sciurus_vulgaris423d ago

The 343i Master Chief has is based on the books. However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion.

Obscure_Observer423d ago

"However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion."

Which is awesome! I love how Master Chief become more John and less soldier.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

isarai484d ago (Edited 484d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness482d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch482d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730482d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior482d ago (Edited 482d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot484d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto482d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior484d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B482d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws482d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730482d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69482d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.
