Fallout 4 review | Destructoid

DTOID:

"After spending roughly 40 hours with the game, I can safely place it somewhere in the middle of Fallout 3 and New Vegas in terms of quality. A lot of the franchise's signature problems have carried over directly into Fallout 4, but all of its charms have come along for the ride as well. It manages to do a whole lot right, but the story drags at times, and glitches...glitches never change."

This will be my first FO game. Hope I enjoy it.

DarkOcelet3111d ago

Oh you will love it, i guarantee it.

IAmLee3111d ago

I LOVE RPGs but could never get into Fallout, hopefully this will change my opinion

Army_of_Darkness3110d ago (Edited 3110d ago )

A review that finally factors in the glitches into the final score rather than ignore it and give the developers a pass :-)
This is how it should be when a game has consistent bugs.

Fin_The_Human3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

If you are not a big open world RPG fan then you will enjoy it for about a week.

I played Skyrim for a week, beat it and never picked it back up.

People automatically assume everyone loves open world games.

nX3111d ago

Skyrim and Fallout are better than most open world games though, too bad if you don't enjoy them.

Ninver3111d ago

Yeah I don't play a lot of open world games besides GTA 5 and it got repetitive pretty quick for me. Still I'm always open to trying new games out. Fallout 4 has definitely piqued my interest.

DivineAssault 3111d ago

A week? Damn, i wish could do that so bad.. My work schedule is very demanding.. Ill probably get it finished in a month lol.. Side quests included..

vickers5003111d ago

Same can be said for linear games, such as Uncharted.

Tdmd3110d ago

Mine too. I already bought my copy, but now that I've read about all the poor performances on consoles, I'm kind of regreting. Oh well, I hope I'll like it anyway.

DarkOcelet3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

Sorry but judging Fallout 4 after playing only 40 hours is not exactly valid for a massive game like this.

7.5/10 is a good score but the game deserves much more.

Neonridr3111d ago

have you put in more than 40 hours to make a claim that their score is wrong? Or are you just basing it off your personal hype level?

DarkOcelet3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

Over 35 hours here :) And loving it and if i would review it by the amount i played it, i would give it a score of 9.5/10 but i still haven't finished it nor am i close so i would be patient and give it a real score after at least finishing 75% of the overall game.

vikingland13111d ago

I see what he's saying though because the game has so much content. The game may just start getting great after 40 hrs. Alot of the higher reviewers played for at least 60 hrs.

Regaurdless I'm sure it will end up being another classic from Betesda.

Neonridr3111d ago

@DarkOcelet - fair enough, thank you for your input.

I do agree with you though in the end, seems like there is universal praise for this game, so it could be another one of those "look at me, I'm different" sort of scenarios.

DarkOcelet3111d ago

Well, thank you kindly for the great levelheaded response :D

Mariusmssj3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

main story is only 15 hours so I guess he did play plenty of side quests to make an opinion. Which I think a review is just someone's opinion.

DarkOcelet3111d ago

You cant judge a Fallout game by sinking only 40 hours my friend. Seriously, the amount of content the game has to offer is so huge and lets be honest here, Fallout strongest suit was never the story, it was the epic world.

Hoffmann3111d ago

Destructoid Reviews are rarely good. Their writers are damn biased and some of them are sjw's

solar3111d ago

Or maybe they don't give high praise to every AAA title like other sites seem to do.

starrman19853111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

Different reviewers are entitled to their own opinions but I get frustrated with scores like these:

Fallout 3: 9/10
Fallout new Vegas: 9/10

"I can safely place it somewhere in the middle of Fallout 3 and New Vegas in terms of quality"

Fallout 4: 7.5/10

The previous games were bug ridden too but praised in their closing comments that it didn't matter, whereas Fallout 4 took it in the neck a bit for it's bugs.

Either way, the reviewer decided on this score and that's his opinion, I just like to see some continuity (when deserved of course) with reviews on the same sites.

DarkOcelet3111d ago

But there are also reviews that are just 'Click Bait' that differentiate itself from other website just for clicks.

I am not saying this review is a a 100% clickbait but it maybe a one.

solar3111d ago

So, when you are sitting at home, you stew about video game review scores and how some abomination has occurred?

starrman19853111d ago

No, when I am at work I check reviews and wonder why some sites are so up and down with their scoring system.

HammadTheBeast3111d ago

Because come on, it's a new gen, new consoles, they had a massive budget, and they still stick with the same, buggy engine. They deserve to lose points for bugs.

MillennialBuddha3111d ago

The insinuation of reviews purposely sporting lower scores for clicks is exponentially more prevalent than actual reviews having lower scores for clicks.

Reviews are not science. This person did not like Fallout 4 as much as myself, or other reviewers. Scores don't matter, words do.

ginsunuva3111d ago

You're missing some variables in your advanced mathematical analysis.

Fallout 3: 2008
...
New Vegas: 2010
...
...
...
Fallout 4: 2015

You're telling me that you got the game early but instead of putting more hours into the game, you're here arguing with some site's review ?

garrettbobbyferguson3110d ago

So his 40 hours of play and opinion is invalid because it's a 7.5, but your 40 hours of play and opinion is valid because you think it's 9.0?

Bansai3110d ago

frame-rate issues, mediocre graphics, glitches - no more than 8 in any review because of just that is justified.

kitsune4513110d ago

Sorry but judging Fallout 4 after playing only 0 hours is not exactly valid for a massive game like this.

KiwiViper853110d ago

Agreed. 0 hours isn't quite enough

Destructoid seems too eager to give great games poor scores lately.

Gazondaily3111d ago

Yeah they have been awarding games lower than the common average lately from what I've noticed. Maybe they are trying to cement themselves as the next 'harsh critics'? *shrugs*

thegreatklemba3111d ago

black ops 3 got a higher score than fallout 4 on this site wtf

HammadTheBeast3111d ago

Completely different games, and BO3 didn't have the bugs this one has.

How nice of them to give us more control over graphical settings as a way to *completely* avoid taking accountability for the broken Xbox settings.

bondsmx2d ago

Well, I still crashed like 5 times last night within two hours. So there’s that.

anast1d 5h ago

I had to stop. The game is not good. I'd rather play Skyrim and that game isn't that good either.

I Think It's About Time We Realize Fallout 4 Wasn't That Bad

Ahmed from eXputer: "2015's Fallout 4 received harsh criticism upon launching, but I think it was unwarranted and the game deserves more praise than it got."

helicoptergirl7d ago

It was totally that bad. I couldn't finish the campaign it was so bland and boring as I recall. Got so sick of it. 1000 stimpaks on hard. It is very rare that I play half a game and then just quit. I usually always finish it. But i was so bored with this game I just stopped and never went back and never regretted it. Just thinking about that game makes me shudder

Furesis7d ago

That's exactly what happened to me too lmao
Fallout 4 is not a fallout game period it's a bethesda game

Vits7d ago

The comparison with Skyrim is mind-boggling. Yes, Skyrim has streamlined many of the systems that Morrowind introduced. However, it did not tamper with the core of the Elder Scrolls franchise; it did not diminish the freedom and sense of exploration that made Bethesda RPGs famous. Fallout 4, on the other hand, did exactly that to the Fallout series. It eliminated what made Fallout such a beloved series to play. There are no consequences for your choices, no reason to explore, and barely any interesting set pieces in the game.

It's not terrible, but it's a painfully mediocre game in a franchise that typically doesn't produce such mediocrity. So that is why people see it as bad, the bar is just much higher.

anast7d ago

They both feel the same because they are, it's just that one has swords and magic and the other has swords and guns.

anast7d ago

I'm replaying it now. It sucks. I'm about 30 hours in and thinking about quitting again. I am so tired of the dialogue I just spam a random button because it doesn't matter. The upgrade just feels like a graphical mod, everything else is not good.

Good-Smurf7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I couldn't play the game as-is it was insanely boring and grindy and the grind itself are not fun at all.
Mods helped me stomach the game a bit better but after a while I just stopped playing and uninstalled it because the game did nothing after the first few hours to give me any motivation to keep playing it, it just became a mindless looter shooter with obsession in settlement building and defending.
Compared to F3 and FNV, F4 was barely a mediocre game it wasn't bad but it's also very forgettable entry.

MrDead7d ago

It's not that bad after 300+ mods that fix it's issues and make the game fun... but lets not talk about mods right now as they are f****d.
