Nintendo's Super Mario Maker has sold more than 1.8 million copies since its launch back in September of this year.

Nice feat from Nintendo. Proves how strong Nintendo's own titles can sell.

Angeljuice3129d ago

I would have thought it would have sold more (would have thought the Nintendo faithful would have been all over it), I suppose there's still plenty of time.

1.8 million seems a strange number to announce. 1.75 or 2 million seem more worthy landmarks.

VER1ON3129d ago

Well they didn't officially announce it through a press release. Nintendo released these numbers in their financial earnings report just recently.

marloc_x3129d ago

The two million landmark is coming soon.

Nearly 1 in 5 WiiU owners. Another 1 in 5 might be too busy to buy more games or, if a child, their parents have vetoed buying it (especially if the child is deemed too young - or even uncreative - to get the most out of the game). Another 1 in 5 might be waiting for a price drop or are saving up but always like a brand new copy. Another 1 in 5 might have actually got the game but got it second hand so are not included in sales figures. And the final 1 in 5 might (I know - it's saddening) have not quite enough interest in the game to buy it. All things considered, it's sold very well for a 10 million selling console considering all these factors . Even a must buy is partial to these reasons. And, of course, perhaps there are up to 5-10 million or more people who would buy it but won't buy a WiiU because they are waiting to play it on NX. It's hardly a game that can go so quickly out of fashion.

That is at least 1/10 Wii U owners having this game.

Picnic3128d ago (Edited 3128d ago )

What you say is technically correct but you make it sound as if the WiiU has sold close to 18 million consoles (because if 1.8 million was about 1 in 10 of WiiU owners then the WiiU would have sold about 18 million).

The WiiU has sold between 10 and 11 million consoles so far.

So I'll reduce it to 1 in 6 WiiU owners which feels more accurate anyway given the various reasons I put in my post where I sometimes combined 2 reasons. 6 x 1.8 = 10.8.

With mass market products available in supermarkets, you have to start off with the base assumption that many buyers are clueless. To some parents, Mario Kart 8 is going to stand out more to them as an easy game to play than making levels on Super Mario Maker. It's not right but it's why it happens.

Good for Nintendo. I am really looking forward to NX. Hope it comes with better hardware compared to PS4 and Xbox One. Only then, I think, it will be able to compete in real sense. It is time for Nintendo to start offering triple A games on their consoles.

VER1ON3129d ago

It's a shame if Nintendo decides to launch yet another underpowered console. I think they deserve to at least compete against both MS and Sony.

wonderfulmonkeyman3129d ago

Nintendo's been offering AAA titles on the Wii U for a while now.XD

I still agree with the hope that it has better hardware thing, though; it'll mean they can do more for gameplay and bigger worlds that they can cram more ideas into.[I care more about art style than graphical power, so I won't be paying attention to that]

VER1ON3129d ago (Edited 3129d ago )

I still see Nintendo, more in particular Miyamoto, as one of the best (if not the best) designers in the industry. It's a shame that third parties haven't been supporting the console. If they release a new console with hardware that use the same architecture as its rivals, I can compete once again.

deafdani3129d ago

Nintendo has made more triple A games for the Wii U than Microsoft and Sony have made for Xbox One and PS4 respectively, so far. Your comment doesn't make sense.

Summons753129d ago

That's even if it's a home console. Though a handheld that could match the ps4/xbone would be interesting.

Kos-Mos3129d ago

Please enlighten me...what is your definision of triple A games?

My 10 year old daughter loves this game. She makes her "Impossible to beat" levels and i enjoy pretending that i cant beat them. Thats a magic that inly Nintendo games seem to still bring in this day and age.

gamerb63129d ago

This game is so addictive, I didn't think I'd like it at first but it was definitely worth the purchase.

Metroid Maker Should Be Next to Get a Super Mario Maker Treatment

Super Mario Maker has been a great series for Nintendo, but it is time to move on. How about a Metroid Maker? That would be interesting! Check out Jason Capo’s thoughts for more.

I hope Nintendo brings back real dungeons in BOTW 2!

deleted661d ago

Metroid certainly would be cool, but 100% Zelda dungeon maker should be the priority! It makes the most sense!

Jeriphro661d ago

The only issue with Zelda, for me, is that it won't have the same freedom of styles that Mario Marker has. Zelda 1, LttP, and the Game Boy ones could all possibly work, but Zelda also has a lot of 3D games. I guess if you limited the styles to Original Zelda, LttP, Minish Cap, and Link's Awakening, that could work. That's four different styles for a dungeon maker, but I think a Metroid Maker is closer to Mario and would probably be easier to make.

deleted660d ago

@Jeriphro Mario Maker drew mostly from its 2D roots, so I take no issue with a 2D only Zelda Maker. However, they also translated Mario 3D World elements into the 2D space, so I wouldn't mind that they do something similar with overhead Zelda games using more modern 3D elements too. A Link to the Past Remake shows how nice 3D elements can be implemented into the standard overhead Zelda view.

2D Zeldas were the games I grew up on anyways, A Link to the Past being one of my favorite games of all times! They halfway attempted a creator within the Links Awakening remake, but I'd like to see a fully realized creator. Of course though, Super Metroid was also once of my favorite games of all times so I'm dying to see a Metroid maker too. ;)

Metroid Maker is a sweet idea

Knightofelemia660d ago

I'd go either for Metroid Maker a Zelda Maker would also be great even a Mario Kart Maker as well.

Super Mario Maker for Wii U Is Losing Some Features After March 31, 2021

Nintendo has announced that as of Jan. 12, 2021, the original Super Mario Maker game for the Wii U will not be available for purchase on the eShop.

Neonridr1279d ago

I mean there is a sequel available. My guess is Nintendo will want you to move towards a more current version.
