Introducing Detroit, the new PS4 game from Quantic Dream

Posted by David Cage on Oct 27, 2015 // Director, Quantic Dream

Hi everyone. Some of you might remember a PS3 tech demo called Kara that we released in 2012. It was about an android who discovered she could feel emotions and appeared to be sentient. Many people were deeply moved by this character and felt empathy for this character who just wanted to live. But everyone had the same question: what happens to Kara when she leaves the factory?

I can't wait to play as Kara

Ex Machina the game essentially

gangsta_red3130d ago

Like a cross between that movie and A.I.

343_Guilty_Spark3130d ago

Seems more like Humans than Ex Machina.

StormLegend3130d ago

She looks so real!

10/10 on that trailer!

I can't wait to see gameplay!

StormLegend3130d ago

I also hope in some way, the Robots turn evil and try to take over the city and she's the only one who can stop them.

Throw in something about having a soul and consciousness through a love interest, plus throw in some very heavy handed idealism of religion and God.

I wouldn't doubt it from David Cage, he seems to write these type of pretentious college film school types of stories.

How horrible to actually make progressive games that push boundaries and scripts that go toe to toe with quality films. Games that are about more than just ducking behind cover with your comically hollow dudebro space marine and popping out every once in a while to shoot some mindless bullet sponge monster.

Themes of what it means to be human, to have a soul, themes of injustice and prejudice, slavery (still exists), control, government, religion ect. These are high-brow themes and in order for gaming to advance we need to start mixing in more than just a throwaway story with our games. We need to start touching on more mature themes. Even Soma was a step in the right direction, for a sci-fi horror game it was very high-concept and well done.

David Cage is very important to this industry, there needs to be a balance between mindless and mindful.

Extra Point: the last game that touched on similar themes and was located in Detroit (Deus Ex HR) imo was excellent.

"How horrible to actually make progressive games that push boundaries and scripts that go toe to toe with quality films."

Lmao...no dude...just no. Exactly which game are you even referring to that goes toe to toe with quality films from David Cage? What type of quality are you even suggesting?

"...that are about more than just ducking behind cover with your comically hollow dudebro space marine and popping out every once in a while..."

Could you fanboy some more there Tyler?

"These are high-brow themes and in order for gaming to advance we need to start mixing in more than just a throwaway story with our games."

You're kidding right? Maybe written from someone who knows how to craft a story this may be true but not the case when referring to David Cage and especially his current games. And we don't know yet if this story will even have these themes even though more than likely it will since it seems to take very cliche'd elements from other stories that dealt with the same topic. I can only guess that these will come up.

"David Cage is very important to this industry, there needs to be a balance between mindless and mindful."

Yes I agree with you Tyler, David Cage is more on the mindless side. So lucky there are other games that do have the mindful type of themes and the fun type of gameplay to match.

Seems like an exact rip of Humans. I bet she will end up being hunted by some anti-synthetic group and she'll spend the entire game searching for freedom while allying herself with human sympathizers and other synthetics. Otherwise it looks pretty cool, but I will reserve judgement til I see actual gameplay.

OB1Biker3130d ago

Yea I love the setting and the plot can actually go many different ways but what matters is the way it's told and of course the gameplay. This game is totally the kind I was hoping for.

That's great. Quantic Dream took everything they learned from their past games and built the most refined, coherent and interesting game and story yet. I even bought it on both PS4 and PC.

Seraphim491d ago

I preferred Beyond Two Souls. Still, Detroit was an exceptional experience just like Heavy Rain. Definitely happy to see the game has sold well over the years.

Fist4achin491d ago

Beyond was outstanding. Their other games were great, but BTS was my favorite so far.

CrimsonIdol491d ago (Edited 491d ago )

It took them nearly 5 years to accomplish that compared to a game that's just come out. Willing to bet a majority of those sales were heavily discounted too. Quantic Dream games were always heavily spruiked by Sony as exclusive graphical showpieces for the Playstation, so I'm sure that helped out too.

For reference the original Dead Space sold 2 Million over its lifetime, so some new IP from a new studio approaching that in its first year or so really isn't that bad.

Great game, really enjoyed this one.

Heavy Rain was my favorite . Fahrenheit was great too

MadLad550d ago

Eh.

Beyond Two Souls and Detroit were alright for the most part.
They're still making games, so something going decent for them.

Supermassive is definitely beating them in this genre though.

David Cage defends response to allegations of unhealthy studio culture at Quantic Dream

From Eurogamer: "David Cage has responded to allegations of unhealthy studio culture and inappropriate behaviour at Quantic Dream, which he previously described as a "smear campaign".

Published in this month's Edge Magazine, Cage discusses in depth the company culture of the studio and denies a lack of humility in its response to allegations.

"I don't think we had an aggressive attitude," he said. "When you're accused of things that go against everything you believe in, everything you've done in your life, it hurts. It went beyond just attacking the studio culture."

Hasn’t this been a story for years now ? Doesn’t seem like anything changed or they have some very upset workers who lie for a long time ? Seems like it isn’t the latter .

SegaSaturn669652d ago

They should hire Kevin Spacey as a janitor. That would be awesome.

sourOG652d ago

The people who use words like “unhealthy culture” are usually mentally ill themselves. Not saying it’s not true, just sayin.

MadLad652d ago

Interesting comment to make ..

sourOG652d ago

Lol just saying. The last person I want to hear about “healthy culture” from is the people who use those words. Ususlly some kind of identity theory-ism. Commie talk.

jartoon652d ago

Okay... How would a mentally healthy person describe a shitty work environment?

sourOG652d ago

Shitty work environment

sourOG652d ago

I’m getting some disagrees so let me elaborate and try to change your mind.

Do you want to hear about healthy culture from people who celebrate fatness or put kids on puberty blockers as a few examples? That’s the kind of people who say shit like that and they are the most destructive force I’ve ever seen in my life when it comes to culture. Easily.

When you say culture what do you mean? The very core, right? The soul. QD is rotten to the very core and it needs to be replaced. With what? Ask whoever is using that term. I’m sure they have an idea. And I’d bet money their idea of healthy culture is ass backwards and not profitable lol.

Another example. I just saw a Kellogg ad that said “Food Justice for black communities”. They think they can trigger black folks into buying cereal with words like justice lol. They might be right, who knows. I laugh at shit like that though because I see right through these idiots.

TLDR:
Some people use words to communicate. “Shitty work environment”

Some people use words to manipulate. “Unhealthy culture” “Food justice”

Sites like Kotaku have been crapping on Cage for a long time now, to the point where I'm suspicious of if he has earned the bad rep he has. Go read Kotaku's review of Detroit, I recall it being borderline unprofessional.
