Halo Boss Wants to Run Franchise Like George Lucas Did With Star Wars

When discussing the future of the Halo series and what Bonnie Ross wanted to do as 343's general manager, Ross said she asked to be granted George Lucas-like control over the franchise.

She does remember what George Lucas did with his franchises

Star Wars 1-3...Crystal Skull...all the unnecessary changes and edits

Not a guy to look up to these days

NewMonday3127d ago

love Star Wars but all George Lucas did was rip-off Lensmen and gave them swords and sorcery

quaneylfc3126d ago

He actually sat down to pen his Hidden Fortress remake.

And then it became Star Wars

donthate3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

That is quite narrow minded view of George Lucas contribution of managing a franchise and keeping it relevant for many decades.

There is more in the franchise than just the actual writing part. You know including making the movies, the fx and overseeing licenses so forth.

It is not without reason SW is one of the biggest and most popular franchises in the world.

On another note, I love Bonnie Ross and the new MS. They seem to have only good leaders there now!

RpgSama3126d ago

I don't think that means what she thinks it means. Lol

nix3126d ago

I think her quote got misquoted.. I read the article yesterday. What she actually said was, "if you want me to handle Halo, i need full authority.. "

I literally though the title said - Halo Boss Wants to "Ruin" Franchise Like George Lucas Did With Star Wars

LOL

jeremyj29133126d ago

So glad it wasn't just me.lol

brish3126d ago

The way George ran the starwars franchise did ruin it so so ruin, and run mean the same thing in this context.

mEATgrinder3126d ago

Yeah funny, I made that mistake too - NOT. Pffft

gangsta_red3127d ago

I think they mean they want Halo to be as in depth as the universe of Star Wars...not making less than stellar games.

There are so many back stories, characters and lore associated with Star Wars that relates to the main story but not apart of it.

I am sure they want the same for Halo.

NukaCola3126d ago

Halo universe could be expanded with a good role playing element. I would love a Halo game with more to explore.

NewMonday3126d ago

except all that SW backstory has now been retconned out of existence.

Christopher3126d ago

Actually, she meant she wanted control over the IP the way George had control over the Star Wars IP. She doesn't want a lot of people popping in and telling her how to do her job and what is best for the IP's future. She wants that control because she believes keeping it to as small a group as possible, even one person, will lead to better results in the long run rather than making the mistakes many IP owners do by piecemealing it out or letting too many people make decisions.

quaneylfc3126d ago

Lucas was a rebellious creative.

In some ways the prequels and Indy 4 were crap, just because he was annoyed at people loving them.

He wasn't mentally ill, he still had a working brain.

ColonelHugh3126d ago

"Jar Jar's the key to all this, if we get Jar Jar working. 'Cause he's a funnier character than we've ever had in the movies."

"I can't even begin to tell you how much of an influence Disney has had on me," Lucas said. "I will say one secret that nobody knows; not many people realize that Goofy was the inspiration for Jar Jar Binks," Lucas said. "I know that you will look at him differently now. It's pretty obvious, actually, but, um, I love Goofy and I love Jar Jar."

They were crap because there was no one left who was allowed to ground him in reality behind the scenes. He had total creative control for the first time and let his wishy washy imagination cloud the talent of his staff as if it was the Dark Side of the midichlorians at work.

quaneylfc3126d ago

Total creative control for the first time?

What about with Empire? That had to be made independently. He was inspired by Disney because he wanted a Disney, it was a midlife crisis situation but that doesn't mean he wasn't in control now does it?

ColonelHugh3126d ago

Maybe you should research it. While Lucas wrote the story of Empire, he had NO control outside of being a producer. Irvin Kershing was the director, and Lawrence Kasdan of The Force Awakens was screenplay writer. Lucas was not cinematographer, art director, sound director. He was the brain child, but the differences between his ideas and what you see on screen are HUGE. Read his novelizations if you wish, but he's not the genius we all wish he was.

Dramacydal3126d ago

$30 billion dollar franchise. Pretty sure she remembers what Lucas did.

thorstein3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

GameInformer did a great piece on how insane he had become. And the sad state of affairs as he surrounded himself with "yes men." The story behind the Force Unleashed was really poignant.

When he created Star Wars, he was surrounded by genius that built his vision. One of those people was Larry Kasdan. Larry wrote Empire and Jedi (sans Ewoks.)

As it appears, he is giving the number one salute to Lucas with the character played by John Boyega. He is basically stating that, "Sorry, no, stormtroopers are not clones of Jango Fett (essentially a group of Boba Fetts running around.)

-Foxtrot3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

But...didn't they stop using clones?

I thought they started to recruit actual people in IV-VI which explains why John Boyega being different isn't an issue story wise.

yomfweeee3126d ago

Fox is right. That is why they even have different names, clone troopers and stormtroopers.

coolbeans3126d ago

Well it didn't take long for that to be brought up. Obviously she's referring to the creative control he had with Lucasfilm from the beginning (before selling to Disney).

If people would thoughtfully consider that kind of impact it had on film-making back then, it's still an audacious vision to mirror.

christian hour3126d ago

"Halo bos wants to run franchise like george lucas did with star wars"

...Into the ground?

Lucas got lucky with the talent surrounding him with the original trilogy, the final result had very little to do with him and he didn't have much to do with v-vi. All that talk of having all 6 episodes planned from the start is just complete waffle on his end...

"Jar Jar is the key to all of this!"

That statement still haunts my dreams.

The amazing thing is, all of his mistakes, dumb ideas and the yes men he surrounded himself with for the prequels, was all caught on tape.

I think she means with how broad and wide it's popularity became because of how well they marketed it and how much they let it spread and develop.

Halo could be similar to that and has the elements to do so.

It will never be Star Wars or as popular as it, but I like that they are trying to expand upon what they have and do more with it.

Stuff like Halo Wars and the animated stuff.....like that.

Bahamut3126d ago

She's going to make Master Chief hate sand?

To be fair, it's coarse and gets everywhere.

Always wanted a Jar Jar style character for Halo /s

areisul3126d ago (Edited 3126d ago )

Well that explains why the second trilogy feels like a bad fanfic.

TwoForce3126d ago

Are you sure about that ? Don't disagree with me, i'm just want to know that. Is is true that we will play Master Chief less screen time than locke ? The way you say it that kinda scare me.

DualWielding3126d ago

I don't know anything about Halo and very little of Star Wars and even I know that the way Lucas ran Star wars is not something anyone should be trying to emulate if they want to be successful

Bathyj3126d ago

Whether you like what happened to Starwars or not, I dont think anyone can claim that George Lucas hasnt been successful.

iceman063126d ago

Exactly...it's hard to deny a $30 Billion franchise!!! That's despite the "errors" and "flaws" of the prequels. (which I enjoyed...but not as much as the original trilogy) Hell, Star Wars has been around for just about my entire life. That's not just based on the movies...but the franchising rights as well.

Well, 4-Infinite dropped the ball massively so don't worry.

Sgt_Slaughter84d ago (Edited 84d ago )

Not really. 4, 5, MCC, and Infinite are only remembered for their shortcomings and failures when the franchise was purely known for being a system seller and an all-time great. There's a reason 1, 2, 3, and Reach are looked back on fondly, and it's not because of nostalgia.

FinalFantasyFanatic84d ago

I don't know of anyone that speaks fondly of the later Halo games, I would like to play 5, but I know it's not good, and I'm just waiting on Infinite to hit my strike price. I played MCC a lot later after it came out, so must of those bugs/issues were gone by the time I played it.

PhillyDonJawn84d ago (Edited 84d ago )

To say it dropped the massively is just not true. Many in the community hold H5 as the best mp mechanics in the entire series and say its what 4 should've been. Its campaign was trash but the MP is Fantastic and many faces of the community still play today and it only made 500mill in the matter of months but sure it dropped the ball massively. 4 was hated due to all the changes at once. And CoD like feature and rightful get hate but it's campaign story was liked by a majority of ppl. 343 hasn't nailed ot 100% but they get 1 thing perfect but F up in other places. Infinite had a good campaign and design but the story was a mess. The MP improves upon what Halo 3 was and is what many ppl wanted to go back to but it lacked content severely. So massively aint the word. Dropping the ball massively is when it's pure trash and unplay/unenjoyable. Most ppl blind by nostalgia so soon as 1 thing aint the same its hated cause Halo set the bar so high
FYI reach was not that good.
