Tyler Hodgkinson of Tyler Talks Games has gotten his hands on the highly anticipated PlayStation VR, and has quite a bit to say about it.

"With PlayStation VR, seeing is believing. It’s not enough to read about someone over the internet drooling about how great it is, you have to experience it for yourself to grasp the scope of the impact it surely will have."

I think that's the final barrier for Virtual Reality. Once Sony deploys floor models at BestBuys, GameStops, Walmarts, etc, more and more people will start to understand what VR is really all about. Until then, it is very hard (and sometimes very frustrating) to explain to someone that with VR they literally "step into a different world."

And to people who are worried about motion sickness/vertigo etc. If just putting on the headset does that to you, then clearly VR is not for you, or you need more time to adapt to it. But on the other hand, nobody goes around claiming that real life sucks because standing atop a skyscraper gives you vertigo. So if in VR standing atop a skyscraper gives you vertigo, that's a testament to how powerful the experience is. To be able to fool your brain into thinking that you've left your couch and are elsewhere.

Thatguy-3103131d ago (Edited 3131d ago )

The way these companies market it this will make it either a hit or miss. It'll be important for people to try it out since it's really hard to explain it. Psyched to see how things play out

Cupid_Viper_33131d ago

Yeah I agree that the marketing will be crucial, but more so for the companies involved than the actual adoption in VR. What I mean by this is simple really:

If you go back and look at the transition to full touchscreen phones, you'll see that marketing was way more crucial to Apple as a company, than it was for touchscreen phone as whole. The market was always going to go full touchscreen regardless if Apple was as successful with the iPhone or not. Someone else (Goolgle, Sony, LG, Motorola, etc) would have eventually made a full touchscreen that would eventually be as popular as the iPhone is/was.

So I think this applies to VR as well. I think VR has a guaranteed market. Just think about how future Pay Per View events will be sold with VR. When you can have front row seats at the next big UFC event but in the comfort of your house. Same thing for concerts, Football/NBA/Soccer games.... This VR thing is going places, and not just in the realm of video games.

So I think once about a million people have this on the PS4, it will sell itself from that point on. If Sony doesn't get it right, another company will always come along and push the medium where it needs to go.

1. "In London Heist, you are a passenger"

basically that means the game is on rails. visually it looks good but the gameplay itself looks very linear and limited.

2. kitchen, looks like a great tech demo but again not really a full immersive game.

i hate repeating myself but what i want is full immersion from a game built from the ground up dedicated to vr. a good game too with high production values. that way i know they are serious and it's not going to be like every other peripheral out there as far as software support goes.

Cupid_Viper_33129d ago (Edited 3129d ago )

@ Moldybread

"i hate repeating myself but what i want is full immersion from a game built from the ground up dedicated to vr. a good game too with high production values."

And once again, you're being incredibly close minded. The key word that separates VR from all other mediums is "IMMERION". High production Values is the LAST thing that should be in your mind, and this is backed up by the vast majority of devs who are developing games for VR. Simplicity, Consistency, and PRESENCE are much more important than high production values.

Secondly, you're cherry picking borderline trolling. London Heist is THE ONE PSVR game demoed so far to allow so much freedom of movement. You can stand and shoot, duck behind cover when inside the room behind the cabinet thing. Even in the car, you can lean out the door and shoot at things behind you.

And then you have have EVE Valkyrie VR which is a Space Shooter. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Then you have Rigs: https://www.youtube.com/wat... listen to his impressions.

No Man's Sky....

Ark: Survival Evolved https://www.youtube.com/wat... Gameplay starts at 6:28

So there are plenty of games that are not only pretty detailed graphically, but that allows you to go anywhere you want. But of course you knew damn well what you were trying to achieve with your post.

Project Cars, Adrift, The Hum Abduction, Albino Lullaby, The Assembly, Atom Universe, Battlezone, Crystal Rift, Cult Country, Cyber Danganronpa VR, The Deep, Futuridium, The Gallery: Six Elements, Get Even, GNOG, Godling, Harmonix Music VR, Headmaster, Hyper Void, Joysound, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, Loading Human, Mind: Path to Talamus, Nighttime Terror 2, The Playroom VR, POLLEN, Q.U.B.E. ,Shadow of the Beast, Summer Lesson, Superhypercube, Surgeon Simulator, Synthesis Universe, Trackmania Turbo, Vanguard V, VizionEck, Wayward Sky, World War Toons, Fated, Paranormal Activity VR, War Thunder

If you can't find 1 or 2 games from that list that meets your standard so far, then it is CLEAR that VR is NOT for you. This is the moment that you should probably stop "repeating yourself" and chill out on these threads. You're coming through a bit sour...

freshslicepizza3129d ago

@Cupid,

eve looks great. those are the games that interest me.

rigs does not look very good. it appears like its made by a second tiered developer like sports champions was for the playstation move.

ark survival i would have to try it myself. that game is quite demanding on the pc so it will be interesting how it plays on the ps4 with vr. good game though.

all i want to see is full commitment before i invest. i was ripped off with the playstation move. great device, crappy support. playstation vr is also another peripheral and we all know they never get the aaa treatment. hopefully i am wrong and hopefully since we have 3 major players that collectively it will bring greater support and interest overall.

WickedLester3129d ago (Edited 3129d ago )

Marketing, price point, and game library will determine it's success.

I believe the reason there still hasn't been a release date announced for No Mans Sky is because Sony wants it as a launch title for PSVR. I also believe it's the reason we haven't gotten a new Gran Turismo yet. I think it's also being developed with VR support. Plus I believe we will see several games being retro-fitted with VR support like Alien Isolation, Destiny, Project CARS, Driveclub, etc.

S2Killinit3129d ago

@moldybread
If you really hated repeating yourself, you wouldnt be on each and every PSVR article talking it down.

Spotie3129d ago

@S2: Just wait. As soon as another positive article shows up, he'll be there to express his uncertainty.

I'm not all that interested, but maybe that'd change if I experienced it.

I sure as hell won't be downplaying it before I even get my hands on it.

The price will define this, if it's over $250.00 it's gonna be a problem

Malphite3131d ago

I don't see them selling it for less than $250. I guess it'll cost $299.

S2Killinit3129d ago

There is no way VR will cost that little. In fact No VR is going to cost so little. Its already been said thst it will cost about as much as a console 349-450 is a good bet. Im actually glad because i dont want a gimped VR experience.

kenwonobi3129d ago

That perfectly described how powerful a VR experience could potentially be. This is gonna be a groundbreaking event in gaming. A new chapter for gamers.

starchild3129d ago (Edited 3129d ago )

Yeah, it's definitely something that needs to be experienced first hand. I used the Oculus DK1 and it was incredible (even in that relatively unrefined form). I plan to get both Sony's VR headset and the Oculus Rift when they are available.

"Worried about motion sickness." Just take ginger if you think it'll make you sick, it's cheap and safe (maybe they should include it). I briefly get 'simulator sickness' and basically the next day it never bothers me again. It seems like most won't have a problem and the others will adapt after they get their "sea legs."

playstation vr is getting so many good reviews

BABY-JEDI3129d ago

It's good to have positive reviews regarding the hardware. But PS VR must have great games. Without this the hardware will not sell well enough.

DigitalRaptor3130d ago (Edited 3130d ago )

With modern VR, the experience alone is so immersive that even the smallest details in a gameplay space can impress you and trick your senses if a developer is clever enough to do it right. Incredibly exciting, and I can't wait to see more. I want my senses to be fooled and I want to be immersed like never before.

They just need to price it right, release game that resonate with people, market it, and hopefully word of mouth will do the rest. Heck, even putting demo units in stores across the biggest markets will make it a lot easier for them.

AizenSosuke3129d ago

PSVR is praise, amazed, and shocked everyone with it's great criticism, and people should be amazed by the VR.

PSVR domination!

As long as its optional and not required for games then im oke with it cause i dont want to use this. I simply dont like it.

amiga-man3129d ago

Have you tried it and if not how would you know if you like it or not?

jv19913129d ago

Cause i dont need or want a huge thing on my head to just play my games. And yes i tried it at a game event

DarXyde3129d ago

It's going to need exclusive games to sell. There's no reason to buy one if every game just has "VR support".

I think they should definitely mandate it for titles that are VR exclusive. Horror games for certain. It won't really take away from Sony's development teams since they will have a dedicated team for that. As for third parties, if it's built for the VR experience, there's no reason to allow for traditional controls if you ask me. Now if your goal as a developer is to create the most immersive experience possible (such as P.t. becoming a full game) then I think it should align with the developer vision, so if it's VR exclusive, I say let's do it.

stuna13129d ago

It's kind of interesting you mentioned PT, I get the strong feeling it was cancelled because it's being remade as a VR title. I just can't see what was in essence a Demo, but that was met with high acclaim and praise could be so easily cancelled with no hopes of revival. It doesn't make sense.

OT: VR is about to change the face of gaming and like Cupid said above, it will transend gaming.

PSN_ZeroOnyx3129d ago

You do realize they WILL make some VR only games, right? Certain games will require PSVR in order to play them, while other games will give a VR/TV option, and some games may offer bonus VR levels only playable by owners of PSVR. It is all up to the devs and what they want to do with their games.

someOnecalled3129d ago

Don't mention the obvious and biggest hurdle to vr. The fact that a lot of people are not going to want to put these huge devices on they head.

When you mention they deflect and talk about motion sickness and games. People are going to be highly disappointed when these things launch because people are not going to want to wear them. And the people that do are going to get tired of wearing the and just go back to strictly play normal games.

Angeljuice3129d ago (Edited 3129d ago )

@jv1991

I went to "a game event" too. I tried out the latest titles in development including "a video game" and "another video game".
What did you think of the new console by "a console manufacturer"?

I can finally play Half Life Alyx.

mariopasta54d ago

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.

crazyCoconuts54d ago

be careful not to sprain your... tongue pronouncing those pronouns

Profchaos54d ago

I'm excited for that to plus I can try fallout 4 VR always wanted to play that

crazyCoconuts54d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

DaReapa54d ago

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.
