“...let’s just hope Square Enix doesn’t stealth Hitman in to the bargain bucket. I’m not saying cheap games are bad games, remember, Fallout Shelter, Hearthstone, and even Guildwars doesn’t cost a penny to play. I’m just hoping Square Enix get it right this time. After all, maybe their last assassination went down a bit too quiet.”
The month of October is going to be filled with excitement as the Hitman franchise is commemorating its 25 years of being in the business.
It’s the 25th anniversary this year?
I’d have assumed it would have gotten something like a remastered trilogy of the original games or a remake of the first game. Something for a 25th celebration.
Super lacklustre
When Hitman 3 recently changed its name to Hitman World of Assassination, fans had no idea how meaningful the moment was. On the outside it looked like a simple thing: Hitman 3 would now be known by this name and include levels from Hitman 2 and 3 - the trilogy would all be in one place. But on the inside, at IO Interactive, much more was going on.
You mean destroyed it with this tethered single-player campaign BS... And only the first few levels of the third modern game were on the disc! I'll never support this crap at any price-point! They've lost me as a customer.
Cultured Vultures: With the World of Assassination Trilogy wrapped up, here's our thoughts on the best and the worst in the series.
I seem to remember there being a fair bit of hype around Absolution, that quickly died down after its release. Personally I'm not so good at the stealth, so these games aren't ones I play regularly, but if they had a good formula to start with, stick with it I say!
There has been a trend of late in Square-Enix games making linear games (Final Fantasy 13's corridors being the worst), but it feels like they're trying to scream "WE'RE SORRY" by returning to far more open sandboxes (Like Final Fantasy 15's massive world). Maybe Squeenix, maybe we can be happy together again.
Never been the biggest fan of stealth games, although Dishonored did change that for me. I think Dishonored got it right with its linear story, but allowing players to explore the environment and get the job done in their own way. To be fair I've never actually played a Hitman game (they've been on my steam wish list for a while now though). Just hoping they get this one right for their fan base.
Good article. I watched the extended Hitman playthrough at EGX 2015, and I'm cautiously optimistic. I do wonder if the series' magic has gone, though; Io-Interactive seem to be advocating that big is better, with larger crowd-sizes and more ways to kill targets in an open-world environment, but I worry about a lack of structure.
I'm skeptical whether open-world hitman will work? But I felt like this with MGSVTPP and it worked. Interesting to see how the full game will play. Enjoyable article :)
