Microsoft's rumoured Xbox 360 price cuts to stir Sony and Nintendo into action?

Microsoft is widely expected to slash the price of its Xbox 360 console next month, will Sony and Nintendo follow suit?

No diss to 360 but why would you buy another 360. Makes no since to have two system with the same games, your money would be better spent on a PS3 with Blu-Ray support, or even a Wii but to buy the same system is nutz unless you already have the other two. If it is about price then get a PSP or a DS. or even that Iphone that you are thinking about.

MS: what ever they do they will still come the distinct 3rd this generation, and price cut will help them only for weeks or 1-2 months.

Nitendo: what ever they do now it wont stop them from selling as much as last year.

sony: depend on what they do they can turn the tables!!! if sony make 100$ price cut this fall and all the games wont have more delays and give the new motion sensor controller with every ps3 sold with the DS3 then they might even take nintendo sales!! so basically sony have many baths depending on which they take, it can effect them positively or negatively but all baths leads that they will still outsell the 360 this year!!

Sony will have to though and fast because consumers will be thinking that since MS cut the price Sony will follow and there will be a decrease in sales as they wait for a pricecut to happen. This will be very damaging to Sony since they have still yet to win a holiday season in the US unlike MS who with Gears 2 are set to dominate yet again

I don't think Gears 2 will shift that many consoles, it's the same fanbase that bought the console for Gears 1 and Halo 3, I think Microsoft should focus more on Fable 2 to attract a new type of gamer.

Gears 2 its self alone might not shift alot of consoles but it could too.
You say the same people who bought Gears already have the 360.Well alot of people back in the day couldnt afford a 360 so with a blockbuster (Gears 2) + price drop it can be a system seller.
Its the overall package : cheap price + blockbuster that I think will move consoles.

Your right a lot of the Gear 2 fanbase already have a 360, but that doesnt mean that there arent a lot of people who want to play gears or halo who have yet to buy a 360. I know its not accurate for the whole of the US but if u look at amazon halo 3 is outselling the actual 360 console so a lot of people still have yet to make the jump.

Also the orignal rumour mentioned holiday bundles as well and if that bundle includes Gears 1 and Halo 3 (which would be quite easy for MS to do) then Gears 2 will be that extra push for people to buy the 360 espeically if they're getting the consoles top 3 games

Oh and im sure MS will focus of Fable 2 closer to its release since they rarely miss a chance for mass marketing

Its the darling of the mainstream and people will continue to buy it because its the "in" thing to do like Ipods and Iphones. Sony will only react if their sales fall because of it. If their sales remain unchanged while MS's goes up they will keep their price. Remember Sony has said time and time again this year. They aren't as concerned about market share as they are about profitability.

The price cut will move more consoles most likely than gears 2. That'd be like saying Uncharted 2 will be a system seller. If people wanted uncharted they would have bought the Ps3 for the first one. However microsoft reaching that price point is DEFINITELY an interesting turn of events. If this goes though I really wanna see how sony reacts. And I guess people can't say the wii is selling because it's cheap =/ If the 360 doesn't push wii numbers when the price drops then you can officially claim that the wii just generally interests people for some reason.

Don't agree.i wanted to buy a PS3 because of uncharted last year but i could not justify the £300 asking price.

If uncharted 2 is released next year with a longer campaign,improved visuals and a PS3 price point of £200 , then i will be 1st inline at my local game retailer.

elite = NZ $699

i dont know what this works out to in us dollars but its pretty cheap over here when you consider the wii is $499, yes a hundred dollars dearer then the arcade bundle! and fifty dollars cheaper then the pro!

im still waiting for a price drop on the ps3 here before i consider getting one because they still currently sell for NZ $799

It will be tough for Sony to make futher cuts in price as they have just started to approach profitability in their gaming department.

Their gaming department also include the PS2 (very profitable), but I feel sales of that may start to drop off at much faster rate when the lower 360's are on the shelves and so reducing Sony's profits, making it harder for them to reduce the price of the PS3.

On here alot op people just disregard the xbox in europe because they presume the playstation is all conquering but that isn't the case - the xbox has been selling atleast as much if not more in Europe than in America - it is only around 20,000 a week behind the ps3 which isnt bad considering the large gap teh ps2 had over the gamecube and original xbox.

I think Sony will have to cut price at this pace and go back to not making a profit on the PS3 this fall unfortunately. At the least the 80 gig will be $349 buy Christamas and they might introduce a cheaper SKU.

I just love the fact that people still want their console to "win". Price cuts on ANY system help ALL gamers because it forces the others to do things they otherwise wouldn't. It's called "competition", and the only one that benefits from it is YOU. So unless you want one system with slow innovation and no price drops, stop wishing for the death of the other 2 consoles.

this is only ms's 2nd price cut since the 360 launched - they are due one and if sony doesn't respond they will lose in sales this christmas. Spreading lies about ms won't make them go away, im just glad im not filled with hate over machinery! Sad sad people, get girlfriends.

When they are not only selling a great console but they are selling one of the best and cheapest BD players? The folks at Sony know that they need to capitalize on the BD win and since it is the Next-Gen format, many new HDTV owners are buying PS3's since they are the best BD player for the buck, and at the same time, they get a cool gaming machine with great extras.

Remember folks, Sony hit two birds with one stone when they sealed the BD fate. With BD as the new format of choice, the PS3 stands to make more sales even at a higher price.

While they might get a lot of sales once the machine goes to a realistic price (you something that the rest of can really afford) I know I'll be a customer. Will it be for a blu-ray player? Nope, I still love DVD and thought it didn't make any real difference in the picture quality and I did watch it on a HDTV.

I might be alone here, but I'm still not convinced everyone is going to switch to BR. I remember working part time at a video store when DVD arrived. We only started seeing a big increase when VHS was GONE. And that was a bigger improvement in picture than BR is to DVD. And don't give me the "adopting faster than DVD" argument. I highly doubt that's true in actual movie sales. The market is concerned about the casual user. And your mom and mine aren't buying BR players until they have no choice.

Glad you speak for all.. lol Actually my wife is a Mother of 2 and we have one, my Mom already has a Blu-ray player and so does my Grandma.. no joke. And you know what.. the Blu-ray players they have are PS3's.. Yeah.. Course they dont see much game time except when the Grandkids and/or great grandkids go to their houses and then its mostly PS2 games but they do each have 1 or 2 PS3 titles. And if you cant see the quality difference.. your not looking. I can and so can alot.. ALOT of others.

The market isn't concerned about terms like "Casual user." It's all about sales, and Blu-ray sales are skyrocketing. In fact, sales for the format have increased 300% since last year.

I doubt it'll have much effect here in the States. Both consoles are outselling the 360 by a wide margin at their current price points, and starting this September Sony is eliminating their $499 SKU to stick with a $399 80GB model, the same price as a 360 Elite.

All of them will be in good shape.

MS is going to drop prices of their consoles to $199.99. This off the heals of the announcment of new 360 games are going to NEED a hard drive in order to play. Can't wait to hear the beetch fest from those new 360 owners when they find out just how screwed they are.

MS continues to fragment their own fan base to the point where when they DO release the next 360/720, their own previous customers are going to stay away from it saying..."never again!"
