Face-Off: Dishonored: The Definitive Edition

Digital Foundry:
While the introduction of some new effects work adds to the core look of the game, doubling frame-rate has a much more tangible impact on the quality of gameplay and we can't help but wish that the developers had focused on this instead. The Definitive Edition remains an excellent game, and the inclusion of the DLC is obviously welcome, but with the maxed-out PC experience available at 60fps on a wide range of hardware, we can't help but feel that it remains the better option, with the existing Game of the Year edition available cheaply with the same content line-up.

That's odd. They say XB1 ver is sharper quality and has better textures due to anisotropic filtering being on PC and XB1 and absent on Ps4 yet they still give the ps4 ver the nod... on your tv the game will look the same but just curious how they gave ps4 ver the nod

kstuffs3179d ago

DF is confusing with other reviews:

1. XB1 steadier frame rate at 900p
2. PS4 frame rate less stable but sharper at 1080p
3. Recommend PS4

They just choose whatever features that the PS4 is better at and recommend that instead.

nowitzki20043179d ago (Edited 3179d ago )

@Kstuffs

Well if the PS4's 1080p frame rate is close to X1 at 900p then the PS4 version is superior.

Its a lot harder to lock 30fps at 1080p than it is to lock 30 fps at 900p. Its common sense really.

freshslicepizza3178d ago

weird how the new systems still didn't get a 60fps upgrade.

roboboysk3179d ago

every game with poor AF on PS4 is patched after launch

VP373179d ago

"Curiously, there does seem to be a small amount of variance in the overall coverage offered by the AA solution, producing a slightly sharper image on Xbox One with distant scenery lacking the mild softening effect that appears sporadically on PS4."

"Elsewhere, texture filtering takes a hit on the PS4 with a trilinear implementation visibly impacting texture quality on distant scenery and surfaces when viewed off-axis. By comparison, a high degree of anisotropic filtering is present on both PC and Xbox One, better preserving the quality of the artwork."

"Out of the two consoles, the PS4 offers up the most stable experience with the occasional tear going by completely unnoticed, and during gameplay it appears as though we are looking at a solid 30fps. The Xbox One doesn't quite manage to achieve the same level of consistency, but performance rarely impacts upon gameplay in any meaningful way; tearing occurs a little more often, resulting in some mild screen wobble in fast-moving scenes - particularly when deploying the blink ability to teleport short distances across the environment - but otherwise it isn't a big deal."

Looks like 2 out of 3 advantage for the XB1 to me, but somehow DF & Ponies give the win to PS4?

What bizzaro world am I living in? Anyway, it's a crappy port on both systems period. No buy.

donthate3179d ago (Edited 3179d ago )

In ever more damning conclusion, Eurogamer says:

"Slightly better image quality and a closer lock on to the target 30fps update puts the PS4 version in prime position here, though the Xbox One game offers an almost identical experience for the majority of the duration."

So somehow, the PS4 ended up with better image quality, yet there were no mention of this in the article itself. Only that the PS4 had more stable framerate.

Got to give it to Eurogamer on how to be biased!

Letthewookiewin3179d ago

Better image quality and steadier frame rate on PS4. No surprises here.

kstuffs3179d ago (Edited 3179d ago )

Better quality by having poorer AF? If blurry texture means better then I suppose you are right.

VP373179d ago

Right, where exactly does it say better image quality on PS4? The article actually says the exact opposite.

donthate3179d ago

VP37:

EUrogamer says this at the verdict:

"Slightly better image quality and a closer lock on to the target 30fps update puts the PS4 version in prime position here, though the Xbox One game offers an almost identical experience for the majority of the duration."

Yet the entire article never says PS4 has better image quality (other than in the damning evidence above). In fact, it indeed says the Xbox One version has better image quality to boot, twice!

Letthewookiewin3179d ago

Lol you guys need to re read the article.
"Slightly better image quality and a closer lock on to the target 30fps update puts the PS4 version in prime position here, though the Xbox One game offers an almost identical experience for the majority of the duration. As such, both come recommended for those wanting to get another slice of Dishonored's finely crafted and challenging gameplay. That said, we're left feeling short-changed by the lack of a 60fps update on hardware that clearly has the capability to do so based on PC performance."

VP373178d ago

Errm...OK...I think you & Digital Foundry need to read the article again.

You quote the last part of the article where DF completely contradicts themselves by saying the PS4 version has slightly better image quality, while you conveniently leave out the sections of the article where DF says the image quality is sharper on XB1 with objects at a distance and the XB1's anisotropic filtering provides much better LOD than the PS4's tri-linear filtering.

How DF can finish off the article with the statement that the PS4 version has better image quality is really quite laughable. Did they read their own article?

Seriously, let's recap; Both versions are native 1080p. Images at a distance are sharper on XB1. Anisotorpic filtering is used on XB1 & PC, while PS4 gets the weaker Tri-Linear Filtering. The XB1 version drops a couple of frames occasionally. PS4 is the best version?

Really?

I_am_Batman3179d ago

Wow the current gen version runs at 30fps? That's disappointing. I thought it would be 60fps like most last gen remasters.

The 10th Rider3179d ago

GTA V on current gen didn't manage a stable 30fps. To me that seems like one of the most essential upgrades for a game being remastered or re-released

FITgamer3179d ago

Not worth it, if you already played it. Definitive edition at 30fps? Ok.

nowitzki20043179d ago

Ill just play the original on my PC since I only played it on 360 when it was new. Will be nice at 100+fps.

Corpser3179d ago

A toaster PC can run this at 1080p 60fps

Riders republic. Nice. I never bought it but played beta twice. Good fun openworld game.

BigBosss401d ago

I have 3 other mates who like playing multiplayer games. Is this something we will all enjoy together?

Astrokis401d ago

It’s a really fun game when there’s a lot of people on but the player base dropped a lot compared to launch. This should help increase the amount online drastically.

It’s definitely a - I want to chill with my friends type of game so definitely check it out! Also it’s a huge improvement over Steep

MaximusPrime_401d ago

Sounds good. Also, Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC coming a day after. I'll be more likely spending time on that DLC first. But will join when free.

closed_account401d ago (Edited 401d ago )

Riders Republic is a ton of fun and one of the best things Ubisoft has done in recent years IMO.

The music and acting are obnoxious, which I just turn down... but it's so much just freeriding mountain bikes or other stuff across the mountains. I haven't played w friends, but I imagine it would be a ton of fun in MP. Very underrated game!

SlothLordPootus401d ago

I kept getting caught up in other games so I never got around to buying Doom Eternal. If it's good I'll still buy it so i can keep it. The reboot was awesome, i think i played through it about 5 times, and platinumed it.

closed_account400d ago

Same here, I've had Doom Eternal on my wishlist for a long time. I'm definitely jumping in considering the free PS5 upgrade they released.

Storm23400d ago

It is a lot of fun. First FPS in a while that has really grabbed me. And I love FPS games. C’mon Killzone/Resistance series remasters/remakes/sequels…anyt hing.

DefenderOfDoom2400d ago

I agree , Sony has not produced a single player FPS campaign in about 8 years. I already played DOOM Eternal which was awesome.

FallenAngel1984401d ago

A whole lotta Bethesda titles in this lineup

Sackboy also got included as well despite already being as Essential title

crazyCoconuts401d ago

Regarding sackboy, you're right... That's confusing. At least wait until it's not in essential, as it's impossible to have extra without essential.

Welshy401d ago (Edited 401d ago )

Damned if you do and damned if you don't with that one I think. When a former monthly free game goes into the subscription catalog at a later date it also gets criticism, so may as well just add it straight away for people who don't claim it going forward I guess.

Profchaos400d ago

Hopefully the claim on the game counts as a essentials claim so when the game leaves the catalogue it doesn't leave the players library.

I found a similar situation frustrating I played fallout 76 when it was introduced as a premium game a month or so later it was a essentials game and I could not repurchase it so I'll lose the game when it leaves the Library

crazyCoconuts401d ago

Spiderman is in the titles leaving Extra in May. Guess 1st party titles aren't guaranteed to stay

Welshy401d ago

That's just the way of subscription services in general, titles come and go, but I'm sure it'll be back. Maybe it's a Quantum Break deal where it's just a license refresh?

It's one of the reasons I fear a subscription/digital only future. I don't want the platforms telling me what I can and can't play at any given time and waiting of tenterhooks for games I actually want to be available.

closed_account401d ago

Oh boy, that's making me want to jump back into Returnal! Not that I'd mind buying the game, love it.

EvertonFC401d ago

Great Month, own most of them but looking fwd to trying monstor boy, nice sto have EW in my collection now and some wolfeinstein.

The Magic of 'Dishonored’s' Blink

It’s a shame, really, that so few games have “borrowed” Dishonored’s Blink – in the right hands, such a power could be game-changing.

It felt kinda cheap to me… both in terms as a tactic, and game design

Abnor_Mal454d ago (Edited 454d ago )

There was a small game called Aragami that “borrowed” the blink, that was a good game.

Unfortunately I heard the sequel wasn’t good so I stayed away from trying it out.

sairenfox2099453d ago

The sequel changed some of the mechanics from the first game but it was still a very polished and enjoyable experience. You should definitely give it a shot sometime. The game's currently on sale on Steam

Abnor_Mal453d ago

Okay thanks for the heads up, will look out for it being on sale one day.

I really did like the first and played it back to back as soon as I finished the first play through.
