I finally tried a PS4 and realized how behind the Xbox One is

Owen Williams hadn't tried the PlayStation 4 since it launched, simply because he had no desire to switch in the past. Xbox always worked well enough, but as he has become more disenfranchised by Microsoft’s slow progress with Xbox One, he started getting curious about the other side of the fence.

I disagree with the title, but I do agree with some of the points mentioned in the article.

It’s faster:
"The PlayStation 4 is hands-down faster at doing everything."

Interface:
"The interface works better"

Controller:
"It’s more comfortable to hold for longer, is much smaller and feels less like a plastic toy. Most of all, the PlayStation’s dedicated ‘share’ button is a winner"

The games:
"The Xbox has some interesting games that I love — namely Halo and Titanfall — but I’m enjoying the fresh air on the other side of the fence too."

The controller is definitely a defining hardware feature for the PS4.
People say that it's symmetry makes it uncomfortable, but that honestly makes no sense. If that were true then the keyboard you're using would be comfortable, and 99% of things you use in life with your hand would be uncomfortable.
- Bluetooth (something the Xbox one doesn't have to my knowledge)
- Headphone jack since launch
- move integrated light bar (used for AR and potentially VR with Morpheus)
- Share button
- Rechargeable battery out of the box (no need to spend more money)
- Touchpad for typing text, using as cursor in some games.
- Speaker for better immersion into game (my favorite is the paint can in Infamous Second Son)

Unless there's another controller that can top those features...I'd say it's the reason with DS4 is top this gen.

And in regards to games. It's always known that Sony goes out of their way to bring a wide variety of games since the PS1. It never relies on one or two franchises to consistently make games for. Not saying that's a bad thing, some like that, but diversity is what has put the PS4 ahead this gen.

kayoss3187d ago

Cant compare a keyboard to a controller. A keyboard rest on a flat surface and does not need to be held. Therefore it does not work the same way as a controller. Since a controller need to be held at all times, you need to build a controller that take this into consideration.
I used have an xbox 360 and the controller was physically symmetrical, but the placement of the buttons and joystick were not. I do notice a bit more fatigue when using it when compared to a DS3.

WickedLester3187d ago

Regarding symmetrical VS asymmetrical, I think it's the most ridiculous argument in gaming. I own both systems and I play lots of games with both controllers. You know what? They're both damn good for different reasons. I can play the Xbone controller for hours, put it down, and then pick up the DS4 and not miss a beat. I don't find a single advantage or disadvantage to either design. symmetrical sticks feel just as comfortable to me as asymmetrical.

@SpaceRanger

You do know that Kinect tracks the Controller via invisible infrared sensors which won't annyoingly reflect in your TVs Screen if you're palying in the dark right?

You do know that the Xbox One Controller lasts over 30h of play time with Standard AAs and that the ability to use a optional battery back which also lasts over 30h of Play time is what humans usually refer to as OPTIONS, right?

You do know that the Xbox One Controller has it's own form of immersion into the game with Impulse Triggers (my favorite is the haptic Feedback when braking or drifting in Forza), right?

I don't have to ask you if you do know that the Xbox One Controller now comes with a headphone jack, because you already said that the PS4 has it since launch.

Oh and you do know that you can just tell the Xbox One to record something instead of pressing a button?

darren_poolies3187d ago

@animalia

PS3 only won last gen because it was the cheapest blu ray player? Haha. Yeah and the 360 were in no way inflated due to RROD right? /s

Unspoken3187d ago (Edited 3187d ago )

-Xbox uses Wifi direct and has decreased input lag with both direct connection and wirelessly.
-They have non proprietary headphone jacks now and the Elite will too.
-The light bar has been underwhelming. Every now and then I catch the lights reflecting in game action, but only when I'm looking down and not at my screen. Kinect is a much better technology.
-Xbox button acts as a share button with additional context menus, or if you have Kinect just use your voice.
-Not having a removeable battery is a con. You have to buy a whole new controller when it goes bad. It also does not hold nearly as long a charge as the Xbox One battery and half the time it notifies you when it needs a charge when it's already dead. Tsk, Tsk
-Touchpad is also gimmicky and finicky. I do like it as an extra button though.
-The speaker is a cool little addition for immersion. I'll give you that one.

The PS4 controller gets cumbersome very quick because the palm rests are not comfortable to hold for extended periods of time, though it does have a slightly better fit and finish. It will be a while before it can top the Xbox One controller.

DarXyde3187d ago

@animalia,

You say others don't speak for you, yet here you are speaking for others. The PlayStation 4 is consistently coming out ahead of the competition in its best regions, hardware and software alike. Hype does not sell a console for 2 years. Wii sold not so much on hype, but it tapped into a completely new market. How can you be so sure the Xbox 360 didn't do so well because it released a year early, the hardware problems could have inflated the sales, and PlayStation 3 was $600?

Let's not paint with broad strokes on others' canvases when we like finer details on our own.

MysticStrummer3187d ago

@animalia - Diversity in the game lineup is a big part of the Playstation success story, and that goes for all the Playstation consoles. It's not diversity at launch, which is what you implied, it's that anyone who has paid attention for the last four generations knows the diversity will be there and so will the quality. After this holiday season PS4 will still have more games to play, and no matter how well the new XB1 exclusives are received PS4 will still have more higher rated games. There were cheaper blu ray players for years before PS3 passed 360, so that part of your comment makes no sense at all.

Necr0philiac3187d ago

@DarXyde

The Wii sold mostly because of hype and because it was hard to find/sold out. It had the most coverage any system ever has had on the daily news channels. It had the weakest launch lineup ever for a nintendo console. The Nintendo consoles before and after it sold only around 30 million consoles. I have plenty of friends and family that were not gamers before they bought the Wii and they never really played it much once they got one. People always will buy stuff even if they don't want/need it just because it is popular or cool.

Cueil3187d ago (Edited 3187d ago )

The Xbox Uses Wifi Direct... do a little research and you'll find Blue Tooth is prosthetic in comparison

as for controllers I prefer the asymmetrical stick layout because my thumbs hit on the DS4... though much less so then the earlier versions

BeefCurtains3187d ago

Oh weird, this guy has an opinion on something... I've never had an opinion before. And now watch the PS4 guys and X1 guys rip out each others throats over another dumb opinion article.

You know, if you like the X1 like I do, you don't need to convince others of your preference. It just is what it is. PS4, currently isn't the choice for me. Whatever... No ones going to read this comment, and some Ps4 troll is going to dislike my comment because it's not entirely pro sony.

APexGamer453186d ago

@Unspoken and X1 fans.

Being forced to buy batteries is NOT a feature.

Also, you CAN replace DS4 batteries if it ever goes bad.

BeefCurtains3186d ago (Edited 3186d ago )

@Apex

Being forced to use rechargeable batteries is NOT a feature, nor is NOT having the option to use regular batteries.

Also, X1 controller CAN take rechargeable batteries if you want.

Just sayin, this argument is dumb...

kaizokuspy3180d ago

I love my ps4 as I came from 360. The asymmetrical sticks didn't bother me until I played cod beta. That's the only game I have a hard time with, stupid sprint. I need to get better at not jamming the stick forward the whole time, but my palms get sweaty as I marathon game. Oh well, still my preferred controller, I even prefer it over keyboard as that gives me hand cramps.

You know, Nicholas Cage, I really agree with you here. Lots of good points made in this article.

Kal0psia3187d ago

It's behind in those specific features because Sony did nothing with it. Microsoft could have easily dumbed down the UI and features but Xbox obviously launched incomplete. So in a way it is lagging behind, but boy is it pretty much ahead already. Like the article, we'll wait and see what Windows 10 will provide in it's evolution.

darren_poolies3187d ago

"It's behind in those specific features because Sony did nothing with it. Microsoft could have easily dumbed down the UI and features but Xbox obviously launched incomplete."

That makes no sense.

Captain_TomAN943187d ago

So you agree with the entire article, except that he thinks MS can turn it around ;P

iliimaster3187d ago

couldn't disagree more with u the share button is horrible compared to xbox double click the home button push x to record or y shanpshot DONE, dont get me started on video record gameplay snapping up 15 mins at a time

LordMaim3187d ago

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic. It sounds like sarcasm, but that could be a genuine statement too.

In either event it wasn't built into the initial design and the hardware for the Xbox One, so its method is a little more convoluted than the PS4 but it gets the job done. The 15 minutes of continuous buffered recording though, that's a solid win for the PS4. The vast majority of the time you never know something awesome/unbelievable is going to happen until it does, and by then it would be otherwise too late to record it.

SUCKxITxEZ3187d ago

The Xbox is constantly recording so if you do something cool but forgot to record before you can just record the last 15 mins if you want.

Deathdeliverer3187d ago

Illimaster I'm just going to assume you're kidding. The process you just named is easier than a single press of a single button for a screenshot and a double press for recording? (Or however you set it up) I understand you want to make an argument but that's one feature that really can't be argued.

3187d ago
iliimaster3187d ago (Edited 3187d ago )

when i push share a big blue screen pops up and takes away from the gameplay its NOT seamless in multiplayer gears ultimate its seamless no extra big blue screen or navigation to video or snapshot just a tiny popup, i can see if anyones attacking etc,. at the end of tomb raider on ps4 i had over 10GB of videos saved multiplayer/campaign in multiplayer I had a hard time finding my good game somewhere in that 15minute clip at times very annoying.

Yesterday in gears of war ultimate i got a tripple kill and it automatically recorded for me and uploaded for all friends to see without me doing anything just playing.

BeefCurtains3187d ago (Edited 3187d ago )

dashboard...Not mentioning that XO has tons more features it also is getting full overhaul very soon. Sony should do something with that controller as it feels like a 5$ cheap chinese toy and works just like one. I hardly play on my ps4 and thumbsticks are completely destroyed and buttons are wobbly.

Anyway, looking at posters history, weird how he writes that he tried ps4 for the first time, eventho all his posts since beginning of time were praising ps4 and crapping all over xbox one. Memory loss, OP?

darren_poolies3187d ago

You must have had a dodgy controller then because I've had two since launch and they haven't been a problem. If anything the Xbox One controller feels like a cheap chinese toy, the bumpers are horrible and awkward to use and the plastic used for them and the triggers feel cheap. Also the analogue sticks feel way too loose imo.

BallsEye3187d ago

@darren_poolies

Oh please stop with this crap. Show some evidence to your claims.
Type in google images"ps4 controller thumbsticks" let's see what results you get...oh right...destroyed controllers.

dakunclear3187d ago

"The PS4 faster at doing something and not everything"

"In some cases the interface works better"

"For some people the controller is more comfortable"

I agree with you on The Games

XanderZane3187d ago

PS4 is faster. That's simply the truth. XB1 interface will be changing in Nov. I honestly don't like either interfaces. The XBox 360 interface and home button still blows everything else away. Never understood why Microsoft changed it. I still like the XBox 360 and XB1 controllers better, but the DS4 is without a doubt the BEST DS controller ever created. Sony got a lot of things right with it, except for the colored lights and the short battery life. I love the games on both the PS4 and XB1. Destiny & Bloodborne on PS4, Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive on XB1. Win-win for me.

underwaves753187d ago

wait till Windows 10 drops, i've seen it run, and it's smoking fast.

0to1003187d ago (Edited 3187d ago )

It's faster: yes as there is less going on, very limited mutlitasking for a next gen console & it's pretty much the same as xbox 360's multitasking, message, voice, pic while in game, you have to suspend games to run apps, except for ps live. so it can be done but sony need to up their game and make better multitasking.

interface: in speed yes, but features like running apps while a game has booted. no as i stated above.

controller: the x1 is ergonomically better, it's fact, offset thumbsticks ftw, but they are both great anyway. ps4 controller battery life is terrible & the share button on ps4 is not so great, it disrupts the game unless you're just taking a screenshot, on x1 you can just say 'xbox record that' or double tap xbox button and press x and it will auto record the last 30 seconds and share it to your activity feed and it's uploaded online to all your friends! all seamlessly in the background. ps4 has some catching up to do in interface features.

the games: preference but the only sony game i like is uncharted/last of us but even then its a short campaign with a half decent mp, not much lifespan. games like halo & gears of war have great multiplayer so great lifespan.

ms are just the best at software, speed was the main problem with this dashboard but with the new win10 UI focusing on speed, is going to change for the better.

DarXyde3187d ago (Edited 3187d ago )

I haven't had problems multitasking with either. I mean, they're both fast enough.

As for as being feature rich, the PS4 is a gaming console. A ***GAMING console***. It handles that very well and I suspect a lot of people are cool with what it's throwing down. It does sell pretty well, after all.

You really can't expect much priority to be placed on that otherwise. The Xbox One has three operating systems. It's also had a bit of an identity crisis for some time. The PS4 is basically a return to the old days of PlayStation and Xbox One is Microsoft's PlayStation 3. It wants to be so many things so badly and it hasn't found it's definitive audience yet. That's not a bad thing, but the PlayStation 4 is what it is. It's a gaming device that can do some other stuff here and there. The Xbox One is a multimedia device that doesn't really have a concrete audience, so yeah, naturally, it'll be pretty decent at multitasking.

However, given that I can keep Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, YouTube, etc. Open as well as a game on PlayStation 4, you'll never hear me complaining, especially because it's very fast. It only suspend and resumes slowly when it's booting up. Otherwise if you're just switching apps, it's immediate. No complaints about Xbox One either.

ColonelHugh3187d ago

With the ps4 share feature you can set it to how you want it done. For instance I tap for screenshots and double tap for videos without any menus. The ps4 is constantly (that means always) recording the last 15 minutes for you to save as well. Don't get me started on the other ignorant crap you said. You obviously don't know both sides as well as you think you do

Apex133187d ago

I own both systems and although ps4 edges it I have to say Xbox all round is better. Ps4 download a game then wait for install, Xbox does it both at once, better controller goes to Xbox, best online goes to Xbox, best games exclusives goes to ps4. Ps4 interface is full and unexciting, Xbox has too much going on and I still get confused after 3 months with it.

Both have pros and cons but hey it is what it is.

ProphetVX3187d ago

PS4 installs as it downloads as well? It has the ability to start the game when it is partially downloaded.

You sure you don't have a PS3 instead of a PS4?

PS4's install / patch cycle is much faster than Xbox One, I couldn't believe how slow it was on Xbox when I finally got around to buying one, especially compared to the 360 which destroyed PS3 on that front.

Xbox One in my experience always feels like it is 'in development', it has a lot of features, but it doesn't do many of them well, things are always glitching out or running slow. For example when I suspend my xbox after running netflix, I can't just go back into netflix from the guide, the app is completely frozen so I need to close it and relaunch it. PS4 has none of these issues, it knows what it's job is and does it well, even if it is not as feature-rich as the xbox one.

It's pointless entering the fanboy wars, the article IMO had some pretty good points that I completely agree with, however xbox has some pretty cool games coming out like Quantum Break and Cuphead soon plus it has EA Access and I'm loving Rare Collection at the moment, and so too does Sony. With that said any multi-platform games I always buy on my PS4 because I prefer the controller and they just seem to run better on PS4.

3187d ago
dantesparda3187d ago (Edited 3186d ago )

I've been saying this since I got the X1, the PS4's UI and controller are much better in my opinion. The UI is far more intuitive and the controller just more comfortable and has way more features (touchpad, Move light, motion sensing, rechargeable batt. speaker and headphone/mic jack and the Share button).

Now watch as some MS troll is going to dislike my comment because it's not entirely pro MS.

LamerTamer3187d ago

1080p. That alone makes the PS4 my favorite. While xbone does it sometimes too, 900p is all too common on it. Since I sit closer to my TV I can see the difference and upscaled 900p is too blurry/pixely/aliased for me and has too many upscale filter artifacts.

DragonKing813186d ago (Edited 3186d ago )

He also said Perhaps it’s because I’ve been using Xbox so long that I’m growing bored of Microsoft’s traditional exclusives — it’s nice to try something else for once. That's hilarious

Scottyxboxoneandps43186d ago

@Genuine-user
While I'll agree with most of your comment. I disagree with the controller and the share button. There's no way the share button is better than just saying "record that". The share button takes you out of the experience for me.
Also both controllers are good but the Xbox one controller is slightly better, with a better rumble function to it, and it just fits nicely not to say the ds4 doesn't but if I had to choose it would be the x1 controller.
There's also the resolution difference that wasn't mentioned that obviously is in the ps4 favour.

I stopped right here:

"The PS4 interface is designed as a timeline, so the apps and games you use appear in the order they were last used from left to right which is a nice and coherent way to browse the console."

you gave yourself away. Both consoles do this. Also, didn't even bother to mention pins which alleviate the problem entirely.

If you dont like the Xbox thats fine, but no need to write an article about it.

PS: TBH, the UI is the worst part of the XBox One, IMO. Not jumping on the hate train, though.

TC is just clickbaiting here.

Jamesx82x3187d ago

First of all this article is a joke he has some very valid points but hides most of it behind nonsense and lies.

#1 Hes become disenfranchised by MS's slow progress?? MS only releases a new update every month and has made so many changes to the XB1 that fans have asked for that this is just a straight up lie. No one should actually believe that one.

#2 Apps take forever to load?? Must be your Xbox because I can make a clip anytime you want snapping anything in no time or show my friends list and creating of a party done in under 30 seconds.

#3 Doing things that take too many steps to complete being annoying. Ok see this is why the UI is being changed so much with the Windows 10 update. If you remember this console was designed for Kinect to be with every console. None of this takes any time if you actually have the Kinect and use the commands to do something but yes there are too many steps for some things but its to be expected until a new UI not designed around Kinect is released.

As far as the rest of the article goes he has some valid points but he ruins the article with the lies.

Ra3v3r3187d ago

@Jamesx82x

I'm on the preview program so I shouldn't really be complaining about issues I'm having but the point about taking apps an age to load is pretty accurate. Not all of them mind, but Skype, friends, party and achievements are painfully slow to load.

I'm also finding the occasional bit of UI lag. Hit the home button, nothing happens. Wiggle the sticks to see if it's crashed and all of a sudden it's gone back to the home screen and it's popping all over the place.

I know we're a few months away from the Windows 10 update, but based on my experience with Windows 10 I can't see the general layout getting too much of an overhaul. We're still going to have the old "Metro UI" which works perfectly for touch screen but not so well with kinect or the controller. Voice control on the other hand is perfect and I'm Scottish so I'm impressed with how well it works. This will only improve with Cortana.

gfk3423187d ago

"If you dont like the Xbox thats fine, but no need to write an article about it".

I like how you Xbox fan(boy)s try to put everything negative about X1 under the rug.

Everything negative about X1 is something tabu within your community.

Nothing in discussed about the negatives and you all accept the negatives without trying to test another product.

Whenever someone from your community tries to speak something negative about X1, you quickly "throw" him to the ground and "shut" him up.

Why cannot someone critize your precious X1 console, why you do not accept the fact that is a weaker console than PS4, why you don't accept the fact that X1 has fewer games than PS4 and why you don't accept the sales numbers?

XanderZane3187d ago

Same thing could be said about the PS fanboys when something positive is said about the XB1. Why do PS fanboy try to bash anything positive about the XB1 and glorify everything negative? There were several positive Gear of War: UE reviews on this site. None of them were at the top of the board. But when the 2 negative reviews showed up, PS fanboys were on it like flies to $h!t. Both bad reviews were at the top of the board for a couple days. Everything positive about the XB1 is tabu to PS fanboys. B/C, Cloud, DX12 all get downplayed by PS fanboys. So it works both ways it seems.

gfk3423187d ago

@XanderZane

No, you're wrong.

PS fans don't bash positive thimgs about X1.

You Xbox fan(boy)s think that everyone that is in opposition with your ideas is a PS fanboy.

I'm sorry that I'm the person to telling you but Xbox fan(boy)s are the most fanatics fans and blow eberything out of the proportions.

For example:
-DX12 - you said that it'll double the power of X1. When people said that os impossible you said that they are PS fans. The present shows us that DX12 will bring 7% performance increase (according to SMS developer);
- Cloud - at the beginning you said that it will drastically imcrease the resolution. The present shows us that Cloud will help only in multiplayer and only for background processes (distruction computation)

So you Xbox fan(boy)s hype everything too much, until it's no longer part of the reality.

So that means no decent VR support on PC and none on console seeing as the ego can't handle it properly.
