The Importance and Relevance of Metal Gear Solid for PS1

As many of us remain hyped for the release of MGSV: The Phantom Pain, we analyse the one game that propelled the series on Sony’s PlayStation, addressing the reasons why we believe Metal Gear Solid to be not the best looking or even the most enjoyable, but one of the most important and relevant video games in the industries’ history.

MGS is a masterpiece and till this day i remember so many dialogue and sequences that happened in the game. Thats how good and memorable this game was.

After the urging of a close friend I am playing through Metal Gear Solid 1 for the first time. I'm 24 and somehow I let this series slide by me. I'm having a super good time and am truly impressed with how well the game holds up as well as the voice acting. I just got to "Disc 2" last night. Moving on to MGS2 next!

oh I remember the Christmas I woke up to a PS1 and MGS.... So awesome man. One of the best gaming memories of my life. Back then I was like "2 discs!?!? Different endings!?!? Wooooooowwwwww!!!!" Lol Vulcan Raven, Sniper Wolf, Psycho Mantis, revolver Ocelot, and Liquid Snake just blew me away. Cyborg Ninja was the coolest thing I had ever seen in a game at the time. Man, wish I could go back and experience it all again for the first time.

People like to talk about cinematic experiences in videogames. MGS1 is the game that started it all. It is one of the few games that truly revolutionized this industry.

Nice write up Tom! My PS1 was chipped at that time, so I could play games from over seas. I still remember to this day walking into our local game shop and asking what the new releases were. They brought up MGS and told me it was doing phenomenal in Japan. I put my money down for it and was counting down the days to pick it up. I was hooked from the first opening scene and to this day, it's one of my favorite series.

I remember being especially proud that I beat it at that time. Everything was especially difficult because it was all in Japanese, LOL. No strategy guides, no YouTube at that time...had to figure out everything on my own without knowing what was being said throughout the entire game.

Now we are coming up to MGSV and it's bitter sweet since Hideo Kojima has left Konami. He forever changed the landscape in gaming with introduction of Snake and the wonderful characters found within the world he created. I'm ecstatic to play his final work for the MGS franchise and from the looks of it,The Phantom Pain might be his greatest accomplishment to date. Way to go out with a bang =)

Thanks man! And thanks for sharing your experience - I can't imagine even attempting such a deep story-driven game in Japanese! Must of been strange not hearing David Hayter's voice ;). I'm hoping you've revisited it since in English and been blown away yet again!

I remember envying anyone who could play NTSC games on a chipped system. Those guys overseas seemed to get all the localised stuff way before us!

Metal Gear Solid is the best game of all time and these are the reasons why:

- Innovative gameplay, it basically created the stealth genre as we know it today;
- innovative story that touched real life subjects like nuclear
war;
- terrific music, sound effects and voice acting;
- incredible graphics for the time;
- started the today-standard in engine 3D cutscenes that basically influenced the whole gaming industry;
- best villains in a videogame EVER, Psycho Mantis alone kicks all the others videogame villains asses;
- most memorable quotes in all the industry, "A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal" (combined with the contest in which was said) is the most badass phrase I have ever heard in all my life;
- quirky humour and tons of incredibly awesome easter eggs

and last but not least, it made you THINK about life, about the world we live in and about the characters we met in this PIECE OF ART. I could continue talking on why MGS is the best videogame ever and will never be topped, but it is better if I stop here because I could go on and on for hours.
