Glad this was made a feature: it'll make reaction-based obstacle courses more viable.

I know I will come across as a hater, but seriously, why the hell is it taking this so long to come out? and why wasn't something of this caliber out a long time ago? like before Minecraft, LittleBigPlanet and other "world builders" exploded onto the scene and became easy enough for anyone to jump into?

And I am genuinely curious, and really want some answers. In LBP in particular, you could not only make your own levels, you can make your own games, of any kind.

Does anybody know why it took Nintendo so long to allow players to become creators?

I would assume it's because past systems didn't give them the power and user-friendly control interface that Nintendo felt they needed, for making this game a reality in its current form.

The game pad was practically destined for world-building games like this; having tried it out myself, briefly, I cannot imagine trying to make Mario courses using a mere twin stick controller in anywhere near as fun or fast a manner.

But what you just described could have easily been implemented in a release for the DS.
The two screens, touch with stylus support would make creation incredibly easy and fun.

It doesn't look like capable hardware should be an issue.

The 3DS, let alone the DS, isn't as powerful as the Wii U, though.
There's more than just the basic creation set going into this; downloading and editing others courses, adding sound effects, native Amiibo support, switching between 4 different game styles, possibly with varying toolsets between them, and a few other things are likely pushing this to a level that wouldn't fit on the regular or 3DS.
Just having the two screens wouldn't likely be enough: the innards would have to be able to support all the features going into it.

In addition. it can't be denied that, of the two, the Wii U needs a game of this variety to help boost sales far more than the 3DS.

It might also be a case of them wanting to give the game to the option with more screen space. Even the New XL doesn't out-size the game pad, and having that extra real estate for a screen makes level creation feel better, IMO.

It also fits in with their earlier statements regarding not wanting to abandon the Wii U, because when you think about it, the popularity and long-term usage of a game like this could stretch well beyond the release date of the NX.

You make some fantastic points, but I feel that if the original PSP can play LittleBigPlanet and support button, character, item, texture, and level creation, and allow gamers to cross share the thousands of user created levels seamlessly and without fuss... Nintendo's 3DS should be able to do such a thing.
Yeah, it is nice to be able to do these things on a bigger screen, but even better, would be the ability to craft quickly and easily on the go, and have access to the potential thousands of levels that will be created.

And this may happen on Nintendo's next platform, we will have to wait and see.

All I can offer is that Nintendo tends not to pull the trigger until the game is right. I'm sure Super Mario Maker will be another masterpiece in Ninty's library ☆

i didnt like the idea of this game at first, i thought it was giving mario away, but now i think it will be one of the most important game of this gen. not just for the wiiu, but also consoles in general during this time.

Metroid Maker Should Be Next to Get a Super Mario Maker Treatment

Super Mario Maker has been a great series for Nintendo, but it is time to move on. How about a Metroid Maker? That would be interesting! Check out Jason Capo’s thoughts for more.

I hope Nintendo brings back real dungeons in BOTW 2!

Metroid certainly would be cool, but 100% Zelda dungeon maker should be the priority! It makes the most sense!

The only issue with Zelda, for me, is that it won't have the same freedom of styles that Mario Marker has. Zelda 1, LttP, and the Game Boy ones could all possibly work, but Zelda also has a lot of 3D games. I guess if you limited the styles to Original Zelda, LttP, Minish Cap, and Link's Awakening, that could work. That's four different styles for a dungeon maker, but I think a Metroid Maker is closer to Mario and would probably be easier to make.

@Jeriphro Mario Maker drew mostly from its 2D roots, so I take no issue with a 2D only Zelda Maker. However, they also translated Mario 3D World elements into the 2D space, so I wouldn't mind that they do something similar with overhead Zelda games using more modern 3D elements too. A Link to the Past Remake shows how nice 3D elements can be implemented into the standard overhead Zelda view.

2D Zeldas were the games I grew up on anyways, A Link to the Past being one of my favorite games of all times! They halfway attempted a creator within the Links Awakening remake, but I'd like to see a fully realized creator. Of course though, Super Metroid was also once of my favorite games of all times so I'm dying to see a Metroid maker too. ;)

Super Mario Maker for Wii U Is Losing Some Features After March 31, 2021

Nintendo has announced that as of Jan. 12, 2021, the original Super Mario Maker game for the Wii U will not be available for purchase on the eShop.

Neonridr1281d ago

I mean there is a sequel available. My guess is Nintendo will want you to move towards a more current version.
