Duke Nukem: The King is Back, But Why?

GamerFitNation: Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford said during his keynote speech at Develop: Brighton that a new Duke Nukem game was in the works, and that some concept development has already been done for it.

According to Pitchford, “I did not acquire the franchise merely so people could experience Duke Nukem Forever. That was, sort of, the toll to pay to give Duke Nukem a chance at a future.” He went to say that Gearbox is very busy with a new Borderlands on the way, their new game Battleborn coming soon, and a new Brothers in Arms game in development.

I am waiting for another Shadow Warrior 2. Duke Nukem wise he is owed an awesome reboot for this gen. Classic franchise

ReesesPuffs3222d ago

Do you mean a sequel to the Shadow Warrior that just came out a year or two ago? Cause if you are they already announced a sequel for that and have showed gameplay. Looks awesome.

Redinfamy3221d ago

Yup waiting for Shadow Warrior 2. I didn't mean to say another : P

ReesesPuffs3221d ago

Completely agree. I loved the first Shadow Warrior and I'm absolutely pumped for a second one. You just can't get enough Wang lol

spacedelete3222d ago

i still laugh at people to this day who brought Duke Nukem Forever full price. you got scammed big time lol.

ocelot073222d ago

People brought Duke Nukem Forever? You mean bought it?

Brought = Bring
Bought = Buy

GrimmQuiorra3222d ago

It's kinda hard to english when you're too busy trying to insult people...

OhMyGandhi3222d ago (Edited 3222d ago )

People. Speak up.
Who wants a new Duke Nukem? I don't get it.
Dukd3d was a classic, but my god guys, just let this die.

Yui_Suzumiya3222d ago

I'd like one. I got Duke 3D and DNF when both launched and enjoyed both.

OhMyGandhi3222d ago (Edited 3222d ago )

that's the thing though.
People want a satire on the action hero genre, others want a b action movie without the humor, but a dramatic increase in violence and a darker tone.

I'd love to see a witty reimagining of the game, but I am so incredibly skeptical that the originality and fourth wall breaking self-awareness of duke3d can be extrapolated and implemented well enough, and ultimately, understood by a new audience that may simply not "get it".

ShottyatLaw3222d ago

I think it could be a solid budget title, especially on PC. Make the mechanics and the core of the gameplay simple, yet solid. Support the modding community, provide a stable arena MP experience, and package it with a healthy dose of low-brow humor.

It doesn't have to be a $100 million, AAA epic game. There's a place for Duke in my Steam library, or on my consoles; and I think there's a market for the game if they do it right.

LightofDarkness3222d ago (Edited 3222d ago )

IMO, the new Duke will probably repeat what made the old Duke a success.

The new Doom is looking pretty great, and my reckoning is that just like Duke 3D, the new Duke will take a lot of the ideas and concepts from Doom and just amp it up. The sense of humour needs updating for the modern world, but Gearbox are clearly a dab hand at comedy in games, considering Borderlands.

If they do something in that vein, I have no qualms with them continuing the franchise. But they need to pay proper attention to this one. I know Aliens was a different story, being a licensed property (Duke is owned now), but I would rather they not bother at all if they can't give it the proper love. That being said, Gearbox' pedigree as a developer, outside of Borderlands, isn't really that great. They're certainly prolific, but they're output is mostly "meh."

NarooN3222d ago

LOL. Exactly what I was gonna say. Well maybe not word-for-word, but the sentiment was the same :x.

JsonHenry3222d ago

I'd love to have a proper Duke game again.

fanboysmackdown3222d ago

Duke Nukem Promo Caught Using AI Images, Publisher Apologises

It took about five seconds for artists (and fans) to notice.

What would otherwise have been a fairly minor announcement, the news that some old Duke Nukem games were coming to an Evercade handheld, has blown up after the rapid discovery that the bundle’s promotion included a bunch of terrible machine-generated imagery.

Amplitude349d ago

Literally who cares. It's a picture of Duke Nukem shooting a gun on a black background to announce a tiny port to a practically unheard of handheld. Why would anybody care that it's AI generated?

Sciurus_vulgaris349d ago

AI generated art often borrows or outright steals from copyrighted images. The the work of freelance artist is also used by AI without the consent of the artist, who are furthermore not given credit.

RiseNShine348d ago

This is a bit confusing, so if an artist painting is inspired by other artists, should their art be removed? All in all, almost all art is inspired/borrowed by previous artists in one way or another, if you use some form of impressionism, should Monet descendants be able to take down your art?. In this case, the character property is from the publisher, and the rest of the art is as generic as it can be, how is this a copyright issue, is dark scenery with red smoke some kind of copyright infringement?

bloop348d ago

@Rise: If you use a music analogy, it's fine to create something in a particular style inspired by something else as long as it's not an exact copy. You most certainly cannot use someone else's recording, add your own recordings on top of it and then call it your own though.

Amplitude348d ago (Edited 348d ago )

The AI is trained on copyrighted images but does not steal them. This has already been ruled in court.

Is it taking away artists jobs? Already has, clearly. There's other artist work out there for now.
Is it taking my job? Yes

It is what it is. It ain't going anywhere and there's a 100% chance that it's gonna be used more and more for game art (and I'm sure literally every career you can think of in the next couple years).

If it gives the Duke Nukem devs (or any other dev for that matter) that much more money to spend on the game instead of ads then I'm all for it.

ps: I've been obsessed with AI for 5 years now and I truly believe this is the beginning of AI replacing the vast majority of jobs and think it's the best thing that could possibly happen to humanity. It's gonna happen quicker than you think. Nobody WANTS to work - even an artist would rather be making their own art to sell rather than being commissioned to do a duke nukem promo shot. We'll figure it out

sadraiden348d ago

@amplitude

no one wants to work, and yet that is all that will happen thanks to AI. AI will take all of the interesting creative jobs away from people that are actually good at them, and those people will have to find tedious jobs to keep the machine running and feed their families. yayyyy......

bloop348d ago

Amplitude: "I for one welcome our AI overlords."

If you think millions of people losing their jobs is going to be the "best thing that could possibly happen to humanity," you need your head checked. Think about it for one second.

CrimsonWing69348d ago

Why do they need to apologize? You can’t use AI generated imagery in advertising now?

gold_drake348d ago

copyright is a very .. complicated thing.

sadraiden348d ago

I'm sure there's an actual human artist that could have used the work.

Essentially, if you're not going to demonstrate to me that your game has soul, then I won't play it.

CrimsonWing69348d ago (Edited 348d ago )

But this isn’t the game, it’s like an advertising/promo. And I’m not sure about copyright because isn’t this an original work? Games sometimes use pieces of other people’s photos for textures, for example bricks or sand.

I’d assume this would fall under something similar for use. I mean, is the image it produced original or did the AI program literally just find someone’s Duke Nukem fan art and post it?

Hmm. Who would play him? I know John Cena was reportedly attached to an earlier attempt. Personally I'd go with Alan Ritchson from the Reacher series. He's got the look and he can act. I'm sure he could handle the comedic one liners as well.

victorMaje707d ago

So true, he’d be great for the role. Imho way better than John Cena.

MWH707d ago

Cena would be a hilariousity, but the other guy could work.

sourOG707d ago

Dolph Lungren in his Rocky days. Drago in shades.

porkChop707d ago

Oh yeah he definitely could have pulled it off back then.

EvertonFC707d ago

Ok this has my interest 🙂

Venoxn4g707d ago

Let's hope that it will be done this time and with a good quality of course.

CrimsonWing69707d ago

Why? It’s going to be SJW’d up and that’s not Duke, so why?

sourOG707d ago

Choose your destiny:

1. They hate you and want to burn down everything you like(d).

2. They can’t come up with their own characters so they have to turn your established character into theirs somehow.

3. He’s a fan and it’s a good character for 80s action machismo. If it’s a throwback with shitty vhs cheese(Kung fury) it will probably be great. If it takes itself seriously we’re talking Uwe Boll level shitpile.
