Sunless Sea studio Failbetter Games is interested in bringing its games to consoles

Failbetter Games, the studio behind Sunless Sea and Fallen London, has expressed its interest in bringing its games to consoles.

So far the studio has seen its two games come to web browsers and PC, with Fallen London set for a mobile release by the year's end.

Despite the challenges of bringing such text-heavy games to a television screen, lead game developer Liam Welton believes console audiences are welcoming of different experiences.

"One of the things is, it'll surprise no one to say our work is always going to involve a lot of writing, and a lot of reading as a result," he told Digital Spy at Develop conference in Brighton.

"I feel our games are natural fits for mobile, natural fits for tablets, natural fits for PC, but there's always been this big question mark over - would someone want to sit there and read in the living room on a console?

"I think the answer is, the breadth of experiences that you can get on multiple platforms now means it's widening the net.

"I don't think people sit in front of a console and go, 'I expect to shoot things in the face'. I think people are now, 'I don't know what this is going to be like' - I think [with] games like Journey, people say, 'I'm willing to give this a go'.

"It's a space we're really, really interested in looking at. Yes, it's going to involve a lot of reading and the way we choose to get that text up there and make sure people want to read it, they're challenges, but they're challenges that we're really excited about facing."
