Final Fantasy Interview: Ali Hillis

FFU: This marks the fourth time we have interviewed Ali, which is insane in itself (she's so nice!), but this one was a little bit different from our previous interviews. To start off, it wasn't conducted via the internet, but it also wasn't tied into the release of a Final Fantasy XIII game. It meant we were able to be a bit more open with the questions and we feel it's a fun, albeit short, interview.

Just threw up a little bit....

You mean the worst FF character to ever exist? No thank you.. Those are dark times I don't wish to recall ever again in life.

Summons753221d ago

Funny how you state YOUR opinion as fact when the truth is yes a lot of people didn't care for her but a lot did and even won in a favorite character vote in Japan. But I know it's cool to hate despite never having played the game in your life.

Nerdmaster3221d ago

It's been a long time since I last saw one of these "stop stating YOUR opinion as fact" in N4G. Every time someone talks about likes and dislikes, it's obvious that it's that person's opinions. Hoping for everybody to say "in my opinion" every time is just silly.

Heck, even if somebody said "Superman 64 is one of the worst games ever made", another person would probably show up saying "it's YOUR opinion, not a fact, because I liked that game".

The funny thing is that people only say "stop stating YOUR opinion as fact" when someone dislikes something that the former one likes. I never saw someone saying "I also like this thing, but stop stating your opinion as fact".

Hasswell-NeverCold3221d ago

I think Lightning is cool.
XIII was too linear game but XIII-2 has been quite pleasant game. Though there hasn't been much of Lightning.

*raced with chocobos just an hour ago*

remixx1163221d ago

I actually preferred XIII over XIII-2......

Elda3221d ago

Agreed!..though XIII-2 had more to do but the fact of just 2 playable characters,no summons nor Lightning imo the game was just boring.

Hasswell-NeverCold3221d ago

Well, I started to like it after 30 hours or so. =)
When you could pick your own party and at that point I had accepted paradigm shift battle system.

Now I only need Lightning returns on PC.

But after I finish XIII-2, I'll continue witcher 3 with that new patch and all. =)

Stringerbell3221d ago

She is a great voice actress.

-Foxtrot3221d ago

Must be a shame to play one of the most bland, boring, depressing FF main characters to date. Hardly no backstory, development or anything.

TheOneWhoIsTornApart3221d ago (Edited 3221d ago )

Wow ok buddy it's clear you didn't play the games at all. She has more developement than probably any character in the franchise.

-Foxtrot3221d ago

Ha...yeah.....she doesn't

When a character in a game featuring voice acting lacks most development compared to the old games with speech boxes it's a little sad.

Hell Gordon Freeman has more development then her and the guy doesn't even speak.

TheOneWhoIsTornApart3221d ago

@-Foxtrot: Ha wow. The fact that you say Gordon Freeman has more character development than Lightning shows you have no idea what you are talking about. I am not going to continue this with someone who hasn't even played the XIII trilogy and shows this much ignorance. Good day.

Elda3221d ago

I totally agree, she started off cold,no emotion & sort of heartless.Towards the end she started to care, showing emotion & having a heart.

-Foxtrot3221d ago

Lol

I love it when someone makes out like they know someone and states it as fact. Mate I have and they were terrible.

Hey while you're at it, for fun, why don't you guess my favourite colour since you know everything about me /s

Spotie3221d ago

Stating things as fact, like stating there's no backstory or development for a character that obviously has a lot of both?

Adrian_v013221d ago

It's safe to say you haven't played the games if you say she has no character development. Despite the flaws of the game, as a character she's very likable.

Off topic, you can't compare modern voiced games to older ones. Voice acting is a limitation of the modern games. Take FFVII and imagine how long the cutscenes alone would be if everything was voiced. Of course it was easier to develop characters with text only. You're comparing apples and bananas.

TheParanoidx3221d ago (Edited 3221d ago )

i thought lightning was very deep character and a fitting protagonist. i know FFXIII trilogy gets a lot of hate for being too linear and having a terrible combat, but IMO i think it was more than ok throughout all games. Lightning returns had an amazing combat system, and the linearity was virtually non existent from FFXIII chapter 10 and beyond.

I know people are entitled to their own opinion and i respect everyones. i just wanted to say mine :)

_-EDMIX-_3221d ago

That story and character development was pure garbage. Its why XIII-2 and 3 sold garbage too, for gods sake FFX-2 sold MORE then XIII-2 and 3 LOL!

....FFX-2 people. That story was as fun as contracting aids, her character as so bland, boring and trying oh so hard to be "kool" and "edgy".

Its a classic case of show me, don't tell me, they spend a lot of time trying to convey her "hardness" and being a "badass" that they actually don't have much gameplay of her actually doing this.....

Example, MGS3, Naked Snake, he becomes bigboss because of what you actually go through, not what they say he goes through, not just text or videos, you have to survive in the jungle, eat to live, heal wounds, deal with a missing eye as it effects gameplay, deal with the final ending as this person that thought you how to survive is now asking you to battle her to the death.

Show me, don't tell me. Often games get wrapped up with lore and speaking well of a character to the point where you've heard more about how "kool" this character is then they've actually showed you there damn selves.

ie Mass Effects codex system...

Soooooo we just reading the game as suppose to actually having NPC's tell you this? Same with Destiny.

XIII's bland characters fall right in there with boringness. Her character is just way, way too robotic to even slightly care about her.

In that, they've managed to create one of the worst FF characters to date.

TheParanoidx3221d ago

Dude, you're entitled to your opinion, I just don't see why you would even click on this article if you feel so strongly against the series.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Review – Zero Regrets

Gary Green said: After finally getting the long-overdue platinum trophies for Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and XV, I wondered if I could manage another. Despite a few blunders, it’s a franchise worth showing off in your collection. I had to find another game with a realistically achievable platinum, which sadly rules out quite a few. Fortunately, I didn’t have far to look as I dusted off Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, which was, in fact, my very first PS4 game, and one that’s aging surprisingly well.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972142d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus142d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda141d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B140d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic141d ago (Edited 141d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981141d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot140d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda140d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot140d ago

Elda

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy140d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

gold_drake142d ago (Edited 142d ago )

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay140d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12142d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay140d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183142d ago (Edited 142d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB141d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
