Final Fantasy VII Remake Official Website Is Live, Confirms "Full Remake;" 11 Million Copies Sold WW

Square Enix has opened the official website for Final Fantasy VII Remake. The website lists some of the basic info about the game including the announcement of the original game’s sale, which has sold more than 11 million copies across retail and digital.

Haha My 13 year old heart is fluttering around like crazy so I am getting up there in years as well. I'm 31 and ain't no spring chicken anymore. I am totally excited for this. Cloud and Barret looked incredible. I love the style they are going for for this game. I know it was CGI but you can be sure this will be a visual spectacle when we see it running in engine. I am still in shock.

They effectively broke the internet with these 3 announcements... And They Still Killed it with Horizon, and U4. This is was by far my favorite conference. And I saw some impressive showings from both MS and Ubisoft, and 3 really fantastic looking games from EA... This is my favorite E3...

When a game wins internet polls by a large margin as the most wanted remake, it's kind of silly to ignore. The game is probably going to be very expensive to make though. The original FFVII had a ton of content that would cost a fortune to remake by the standards of SE today. They were even pretty expensive back when the game first released.

Two most looked forward to things....Knights of the round with Advent Children quality models(Bahamut was awesome in the movie after all), and Cloud in Drag in Advent Children quality models. I have a feeling the latter scene is going to be hilarious and probably played up quite a bit.

If they do that, it's not really a remake though. It's more a reboot...and even that term is a stretch. Dirge of Cerberus was an AJRPG, and it failed to impress.

If that's actually true, then my hype for the game will actually die pretty quick.

I'd prefer a turn based JRPG like the original. It had a good battle system, and is still fun to play even today.

well, that's exactly what a remake would be. a reboot would be if they changed everything, including story, world etc.

if they keep everything the same but just add shiny graphics it's a remaster, not a remake.

Kind of. Like I said, a reboot is kind of a stretch, as a reboot implies that the story is being changed somewhat, or that the presentation is being changed. Presentation could be anything from style(which works for the definition), or genre, which is what Noctis is saying it might be.

I think I would just like to see pretty much what was there before, with the upgraded graphics, possibly some tweaks to the ATB system, and instead of static screens to move around in, a more open world that you can traverse without the loads. Maybe a bit more streamlining of the story parts of the game, as there were quite a few scenes with a lot of text to read.

There are a lot of directions the game could go, but I feel that an AJRPG would not suit the feel of the original game. I hate to say it, but SE hasn't really impressed me with their multi-person battles for AJRPG's, and the hybrid of FFXIII while solid in design, kind of got monotonous for random battles.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be Square's biggest work to date. it will either put the company back on the map as the pioneers they once were or, God forbids, it will brake them.

they have to please both worlds, old and new fans. FFVII's world is big and its legacy is not to be taken lightly and Square knows. it will require utmost level of dedication and attention to every single detail. time and money will be invested big time here.

let's see how this will turn out.

I'm actually not too worried as XV is a special case, they actually release games at a ok rate, even for being Square lol.

We got 3 FFXIII's, an MMO, Bravely Default and second. I would say thats not that bad. XV is the only exception. With this new hardware, they making stuff a lot faster as XV is coming along nicely. x86 might be really speeding things up so now's Square's crazy cycles are merely a short 3 years....thats like some sort of lighting time frame for Square lol.

FFXV went through development hell for a number of reasons, all of them not actually related to the game itself. Most of their games don't have that problem. KH3 was never actually in production until a couple years ago, so it's not really a matter of development, just SE not greenlighting production.

Man I can't believe it ... I remember this game and Crash Bandicoot where the first PS games I ever owned. Crash came with my Playstation and I remember going to Toys R Us with my own money as a kid to pick up FF7, I walked like 3 miles to get to that damn store just to see what demos they had and to walk around the store.

Was still new to the PS so I didn't understand what a memory card was, so the beginning of FF7 is embedded in my brain, but when I finally got my memory card...psh, had no idea what was in store for me.

To be fair, no this wasn't my first RPG as I played tons of others on the SNES even Final Fantasy, but at the time even though I beat them and enjoyed them I don't think I had the mental capacity to really understand them and enjoy them fully like they where intended. I was older when I played 7 and understood what I was doing, why I was doing it etc which made the game all the more enjoyable made me a long time fan of the franchise for life.

I think a lot of people went through this same transitional period with FF7 and that's why it's a game they cherish so much. Don't even get me started on that feeling you got when you experienced that epic final boss battle with Sephiroth, I remember fighting Safer Sephiroth to the One Winged Angel theme in what was pretty much what I always thought Heaven would look like more or less. Mind was blown as a kid...lol then I saw Supernova.

At the end of the day it's great to see Square listening to their fans and not just with the FF7 remake, but recently in general they've been making good decisions. It goes to show if there is enough demand for something that gamers can (eventually) get what they want.

You just brought back a lot of memories of carefully deleting certain games from my memory card and making sure to keep all Final Fantasy saves and Resident Evil saves intact. Always needed space and was always terrified I'd delete the wrong game. My Dad was an FF addict at that time too, probably his saves that scared me.

Well said. My wife has no idea what this does for me at age 29 now looking back at FF 7 for PS1. My brother and I traversing on foot through the backyards and alleys and neighborhoods in route to the pawn shop where we discovered playstation and final Fantasy. Seeing him play it and me be like dude those graphics are lame you should see the final Fantasy 8 commercial. It's so much better. And then I saw cloud's first limit break. Sold. Hooked from then on. Looking forward to the new generation bringing life back to a valued classic.

I was 18 when it first released, and I can say even at that age, it's difficult to really grasp the story because the idea of politics and phychology aren't really things that teenagers grasp. I appreciate the games story a lot more since I played it again in my later 20's when the real world settled in on me. And I still play it every few years now and always find new things to like about it.

That's very true, to be honest most of the older FF titles are that way. I know I had no idea how dark FF6 really was until I played it again years later. All I knew was that I had fun playing it.

I think all the FF games are that way. Some just do it better than others. FFVII itself was pretty rich in all the different factors that affect people differently. Environmentalism, politics, the oppressive feeling of daily life, corporate greed, conspiracy, etc. Nowadays, I think teenagers are more tuned into this stuff than when I was that age, mostly due to the change in media, but I feel they are either over cynical or completely misinformed in many cases, but they have a better grasp on what impact it could have on their life. Those are things that took me a while to appreciate.

On the other hand, when I played FF8, I think the story was actually better because it had many of the same themes(as most FF's do), but the characters were actually teenagers, so the experience of playing it as what amounts to just moving out of the teen years, you can appreciate what they go through and for the most part reacted in the way a teenager would be expected to act. FF8 was more a coming of age story, where the realities of life settle in, and at the time of it's release, it was pretty much the same time I was going through that same thing, so it was much more impact for me.

FF6 was pretty dark, but I haven't played it for a very long time so I think I'll hold off on commenting.

11 million was pretty huge 20 years ago. Think there were less than 20 million PS1's at the time of it's release, but this game kept getting reprints in the form of classic editions for years after it's release. The PC version also did quite well, and it's maintained sales due to it's classic nature and steam and PSN re-releases.

Even by today's standards, 11 million is a lot of copies.

The 11 million number isn't from 20 years ago, it's s cumulative total for LTD sales over 20 years.

This game has been available in physical release for ps1 and PC, and digital release on multiple platforms.

Im contrast Madden was doing higher number 20 years ago, and a game like GTA V, had passed 52 million in just 2 years

For it's time, that was pretty impressive. About 1/3 of the sales for the game were within the first three weeks of their release in the various markets. About 40% happened over the course of the generation with the generation. Steam made up about another million copies up through March of this year.

Never said it was the highest selling game ever, just that for it's time, it was nothing to scoff at and that by today's standards, 11 million is still pretty good. Even 5 million is pretty good....although not by Square expectations apparently.:)

I'm sure the game will do fine. I doubt it will sell like Madden or COD, but the hype for the game could be huge if they manage to not screw it up.
