Insomniac: Ratchet & Clank PS4 is 1080p/30fps, “No Plans” for Anything Resistance

Shortly after giving us a look at Ratchet & Clank PlayStation 4 gameplay, Insomniac Games Community Lead James Stevenson confirmed that the game will run at 1080p/30fps

I would love a current gen Resistance from then one day. A 3RD Person shooter reboot would be sick.

But R&C definitely looks awesome. Its literally a playable CG movie.

-Foxtrot3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

Either a third person shooter reboot telling a totally different story about how they invaded etc

A remake in third person

or

Resistance Fall of Man - Remake

THEN

Resistance Fall of Man 2 with Nathan Hale taking the fight to their planet

I think in third person Nathan Hale could have better development, like we see in Uncharted

Eonjay3260d ago

Insomniac has made the decision that all of their games will be 30 FPS to deliver best possible visuals because they have discovered that it doesn't make a difference to their sales.

I mean they said it themselves:

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

So every article about framerate and an Insomniac game is redundant.

Okay, so after seeing uncompressed video footage of this game on gamersyde, I'm a lot more impressed with the visuals :-) youtube really didn't do it justice.

morganfell3260d ago

@Debaitable,

Here is a piece of advice:

"At this point in the franchise, if you don't like the game, then don't buy it & stop bashing the articles. We get it. No one is force feeding you to. Let others enjoy what they enjoy."

Look familiar? http://n4g.com/news/1511762...

Tell the both the pot and kettle hello when you see them.

ShinMaster3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

@ Debaitable

It's a brand new game, dummy.

@ morganfell

Owned that fool.

miyamoto3260d ago

I want a Ratchet and Clank Complete Remastered Collection by Blue Point Games on PS4 before this game launches next year.

Christopher3260d ago

I agree. Bring back dual wielding pistols! :)

Army_of_Darkness3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

@Morganfell

Bro, you just took Debaitable's keyboard out of his hands and B1TCH-smacked him across the face with it! LMFAO!

InactiveUser3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

I don't know where you guys are coming up with this 3rd person nonsense. R:FoM's multiplayer was likely the best arcade FPS ever made. They fkd up and took a ton of well deserved criticism and declining sales by changing the original formula way too much with each iteration. Now you're talking about a much bigger jump from first person to third person? Crazy talk. They had a winner with the original, but then went toward CoDification like so many others. A return to the original formula is what has been needed, not more change. And no, 3 didn't return to it's roots like they promised. If anyone thinks it did and saying 'weapon wheel' will prove your point, then you're just showing you have no clue what you're talking about, so don't bother.

On topic: I haven't looked much into this new R&C yet, but from what I have seen it looks good, like any other of the main games, and I'll likely be picking it up.

InactiveUser3260d ago

As much as I would love remasters, they probably should let Resistance simmer for a while after all of the backlash from 2 & 3. While playable games, they completely alienated their original fan base (more specifically the competitive crowd) with all of the changes.

They should aim for probably 3-4 years down the line with remasters leading to a prequel set in Russia & eastern Europe called Resistance: The Angry Night.

oasdada3259d ago

I would like to see a resistance game from another dev with a different direction.. enjoyed all 3 of them but now they should change it up a bit, nake it more gritty and frightning

Utalkin2me3259d ago

@Debaitable

So what does remasters/remakes/reboots, have to do with this particular article? Considering this is a brand new ratchet and clank game?

InactiveUser3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

@Utalkin

Unless they changed their plan for this game; this is a 're-imagining' of the first/original R&C game from PS2.

And we're talking about Resistance remasters, etc., because it mentions 'No Plans for anything Resistance', but we want more Resistance in some form.

Would have loved 60FPS but looking this good 30FPS should be enough.

Moldiver3260d ago

I dont think 60FPS is important in this style of game. The visuals are great and insomniac make solid gameplay experiences. they made the right call, going by what I have seen of the game.

LonDonE3259d ago

Agreed and 30fps is completely fine as long as its a rock solid locked 30fps with no tearing and frame timing issues.

ger23963260d ago

I hope we get another resistance, I don't think it has to be insomniac who makes it though.

Eidolon3260d ago

I would love even a FOM remaster, I love the gameplay and multiplayer. Would rather have me some Spyro though.

showtimefolks3260d ago

I really can't wait to play it. Also Sony bend maybe doing a new resistance game. Resistance retribution was awesome

Ratchet and clank a very awesome series. I hope more people give this, series a chance on ps4. Also can't wait for the movie since insomniac are writing the script

Khajiit863259d ago

Sad for no Resistence on current gen, its one of the best franchises last gen. Hopefully they are making something new for us thats just as great.

Wouldnt mind waiting for Resistance to launch with the PS5.

Yeah cant wait for R&C

hangdang3259d ago

It's literally not because it's literally a game. But don't let that stop you from using that word

BallsEye3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

Looks great but CG movie is a little stretch. Anyway, why not 60 fps? Loved previous games for it's smoothness... Ah right, so it will look better on screenshots for forum people to show off -.-

Concertoine3260d ago

Not sure why this of all games should run in 30 fps... the ones on PS2 ran in 60 fps.

DarkOcelet3260d ago

While 60fps is much smoother than 30fps, its still playable. Seriously my friend, 30fps is not bad and with those beautiful visuals. I would say, its worth it.

But thats my opinion and not everyone will agree with it.

Concertoine3260d ago

Not saying its not playable.

I'm sad to see that now even games with simple aesthetics are sacrificing framerate for textures and fancy particle effectz and such. I remember when there were great looking games like Jak or Metroid Prime with no loading screens, 60 fps, and sometimes 480p (then the max res on console).

I give praise to MGS 5 for making an amazing open world game at 1080p/60 fps.

uth113260d ago

I find games that running at a true 30 are plenty smooth. I think gamers blame games with laggy controls, frame rate drops, and screen tearing on being 30 fps. But 30fps done right has none of those problems.

aquaticDonut3260d ago

30 FPS is acceptable, sure. Doesn't mean we have to settle for it. I don't know when people started thinking that graphics are more important than gameplay, but I certainly don't and that's a big reason why I game on PC, where I'm not resigned to devs making these kinds of bad decisions and I can always get high framerate.

super_bruno3260d ago

@Concertoine

It may be the engine is a bit taxing on the console and not the console per se

dRanzer3260d ago

Concetoine#

This game if far from "simple".
CGI level from pixer, this is how this game looks like

_-EDMIX-_3260d ago

@Con-"sacrificing framerate for textures and fancy particle effectz and such"

....its their game. They can do what they feel with it. Why should they downgrade effects for a feature they likely don't agree with? If they wanted it...they would clearly not include those um "effectz".

"Jak or Metroid Prime with no loading screens"

...Metroid prime didn't have a loading "screen" but still actually loaded...that doesn't really mean much other then they hid the loading segments well.

MGS5 is also not a NEXT GEN ONLY title. They have a 360 and PS3 version they clearly can scale back from on PS4 and XONE. The game looks great, but clearly it could have looked better NEXT GEN ONLY on a much more demanding engine.

Do you not recall that those same games didn't have real time lighting, textures, complex physics etc? Do you not know that over time they need a trade off? To do that same thing today with all the features that go into games today is NOT THE SAME TASK.

ShinMaster3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

Honestly, I'd rather they sacrifice 1080p instead.

That said, it's important that the frame rate is steady and smooth, even if it's 30fps. A 60fps game that always dips to 40fps and stutters is much more annoying.

Locknuts3260d ago

Barely playable....Shouldn't be happening on 'the world's most powerful console'

ChrisW3259d ago

Look! We all know the new standard...

Anything less than 60 FPS @ 1080p is unplayable!

GarrusVakarian3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

Insomniac said a while back that they don't do 60fps anymore, unfortunately.

The link to the article is broken, but this is what they said:

"When there is a clear choice between framerate and improved graphics, graphics should win.
a drop in framerate is interestingly seen by some players as a reward for creating or forcing a complex setup in which a lot of things must happen on the screen at once. As in, “Damn! Did you see that? That was crazy!”
There is virtually no advantage in sales or reviews of a 60 fps game versus a 30 fps game."

Concertoine3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

I can see why, their games aren't selling like they used to and critics and gamers alike have become accepting of 30fps as a standard.

I personally will always take 60 fps over 30 fps with some better visuals.

He sounds like he's making excuses but there is some truth. A lot of action games like to have brief pauses for when you make contact with enemies to emphasize the strength of your blows. But those games usually run in 60 fps lol...

Locknuts3260d ago

But it's still better for gamers.

MadLad3259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

"When there is a clear choice between framerate and improved graphics, graphics should win"

Am I the only one who hates hearing stuff like that out of a developer's mouth?
If you're a gamer more interested in graphics, that's one thing. But when you have a developer saying they would prefer to make it prettier, rather than provide a smooth gameplay experience, it's a little disheartening.

We are the interactive medium. We should worry about the interaction.

Also, as per reviews, while it can't be directly linked, it does have to be said that their highest rated title in the series was, in fact, one that ran at 60FPS.

DarkOcelet3260d ago

I am gonna be honest when i say its weird how good MGSV looks and runs on 60fps while still being open world.

Fox Engine is Boss!

Palitera3260d ago

Surely Insomniac devs don't share the same talent. At least on the tech aspect.

The Fox Engine is top notch, it seems to be the best around. Insane details, graphics and animations... And 60 FPS.

But, in the end, we can't expect every dev to be this talented.

UltraNova3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

The FOX engine is black magic, there's no other way to describe it.

When all others struggle to hit 1080p at a stable 30fps on ps4 these guys made an engine that looks just as good and mostly better than everything else, in an open world setting at 60fps!

I mean what the hell? Master Wizard level coding right there!

Lets not forget FFXV's engine too. This goes to show that when Japanese put their minds to it everyone else plays catchup.

reaper243259d ago

Too bad, there will be no good games using this awesome engine anymore. Even looking at your profile pic makes me sad.

Spotie3260d ago

Because what they want to do with it means that 30fps is a better choice.

Even though I'm not a fan of the series, years spent around gaming has shown me that R&C is pretty heavy on the explosions and particles and such. The ore of that you have going on, the more difficult it'll be to maintain framerate. If that's the case, it's better to have a lower framerate that won't drop than a higher framerate that will, don't you think?

Concertoine3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

In my opinion it's better to prioritize the framerate from the beginning. That's what they've done with every installment so far.

I just don't see how better visuals could enhance a game like this. If it looked just a LITTLE worse and went a LITTLE easier with particle effects they could get it up to 60 like the old games, which hold up today because of a simple art style and a high framerate. I would even take a hit on the resolution for the better playing experience that 60 fps offers.

I'm just old fashioned i guess, because clearly most people choose better visuals over better framerate.

Gazondaily3260d ago

It looks visually astounding so I can forgive the drop in frame rate in the series for sure.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3260d ago

It's the same Engine as "Sunset Overdrive" which is BEAUTIFUL in motion! And it can only run 900p 30fps on X1.

It play well at 30fps.

BubTheHuman3259d ago

Open world & 20 + NPC's vs... -__-

yezz3260d ago (Edited 3260d ago )

I completely agree with you. There are very few games where I demand those smooth frame rates like sports games and this franchise. Like you said the PS2 ones were already 60fps and it made a huge difference back then so it simply feels odd to not have that smoothness nowadays.

That's just how I remember this franchise and when I played All 4 One it just felt odd with 30fps.. The game is most likely going to be good but it should be 60fps for that ultimate Ratchet and Clank feel!

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3260d ago

lower resolution and 60fps would had been better but if it locked 30fps then I guess it not a big deal. Though 60fps should be what all Platformers runs at.

MadLad3259d ago

I've always been a clarity and FPS guy, myself. As a PC gamer, I am happy to tone down the visuals themselves in order to hit 1440p and 60FPS or higher.
The 1440p thing is mainly a substitute for AA, mind you. If there's one thing I loathe, it's jaggies.

StormLegend3260d ago

I don't care if it's 30fps or 60fps, I just want the game!
I'm glad it's looking/ playing great, I can't wait! :D

Mr_Luke3260d ago

I can't believe that a R&C game will run @60fps.

Really... i'm not saying the game will be bad bu i'm used to 60fps

mike32UK3260d ago

Anyone surprised by this really shouldn't be... http://www.insomniacgames.c...

Mr_Luke3259d ago

i meant "will not run", since all of them untill now were 60fps (speaking about R&C games). I don't know why people disagreed, probably they like this "30fps" generation.

BUT... there's a BUT... i saw a lot of framedrops lately on the PS3 games (always talking about R&C) so i guess solid 30fps with gorgeous graphics are better.
Maybe i still live in the illusion that this generation of consoles can do 1080p@60fps without compromises ;) and don't tell me again the Forza 5 story, i said without compromises..

xxxsiegezzz3259d ago

You wont probably even notice the difference in a game like this. In fps:s 30fps is almost unplayable, but in 3rd person funny arcade shooters it doesn't matter.

"Please tell me were you got never sony from in my comment?"

This is a first party title.
Released and poorly optimised. You jump straight to AMD being completely at fault as if TLoU PC port didn't happen.

Christopher290d ago (Edited 290d ago )

AMD themself said it was a driver issue.

generic-user-name290d ago

You should probably make sure it is Sony before trying to fling mud.

ModsDoBetter290d ago

@Generic with the cope:

From DigitalFoundry,

"The comparison, which was shared by Digital Foundry, was accompanied by a written analysis that goes over some of the port's best features, such as good scalability, which allows players with the proper hardware to enjoy much better visuals than on PlayStation 5 and those with underpowered machines to have still a decent experience barring some stuttering, and issues, such as missing transparency effects at max settings, texture loading issues, shadows issues with ray tracing enabled, stability issues and more. With the additional disabling of ray tracing on AMD GPUs due to stability issues, it feels like this is yet another port that was launched in an unpolished state and that will require multiple patches to be in a truly acceptable one."

"it feels like this is yet another port that was launched in an unpolished state and that will require multiple patches to be in a truly acceptable one."

This is not solely an issue with AMD, the port is "yet another" with missing features.

AMD has always been crap compared to Nvidia. The only advantage they have is price.

DarXyde290d ago

And power efficiency. And arguably better performance on 1080p/1440p cards. And availability.

Nvidia cards really aren't worth hunting high and low for when there are very comparable AMD cards that are cheaper. I really have to give credit to AMD for their very frequent and consistent grind with RDNA. This issue I reckon is a developer level problem.

Can't really miss with either, but considering Jensen and Lisa are relatives, they probably laugh about these debates over a very expensive holiday dinner.

iAmyRose290d ago

Naw AMD have had instances of being good, Nvidia do have better features, raytracing and AI performance if you play with software that uses it though.

KeeseToast290d ago

@DarXyde
Power efficiency is not true at all this gpu generation. Nvidia‘s 4000 series is more power efficient that AMD 7000

DivineHand125290d ago

I believe AMD offers higher vram at lower price points compared to NVidia. We have found out that this generation needs at least 8GB to load the highest detail textures at 1080p.

This issue with the drivers will eventually be fixed for Ratchet and Clank, however, the vram issue NVidia has on their midrange and entry level cards can only be fixed by spending more money on a higher end card.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 290d ago
CantThinkOfAUsername290d ago

AMD has already confirmed it's a driver-related issue on their cards. Besides, AMD 'users' can't stop telling us how not important Ray Tracing is, how they always play with it off, and how it's an 'Nvidia gimmick.' This shouldn't be a problem for them I believe.

On a side note, kudos to Nixxes and Sony for releasing one of the best PC ports in 2023. Amazing graphics with Ray Tracing, great performance, detailed system requirements, plenty of graphics options, all upscaling technologies (DLSS, FSR, and XeSS), DirectStorage 1.2, and native Mouse and Keyboard support.

INMATEofARKHAM290d ago

Not surprised by an AMD driver issue... I love they are in the market and help keep Intel honest but I've had some whacked driver issues with then so I always just go with Intel anymore.

I'm sure they'll have it fixed in the coming days, if it even takes that long, just one of the joys of PC gaming.

ChasterMies290d ago

Imma just sayin’, this is why I play on consoles.

Good-Smurf290d ago

No issues at all on PS5 and some already called me being trolling yesterday.
No telling how well it will run on my PC because there's too things that can go wrong there being High End Nvidia stuff and everything.

MadLad290d ago

Consoles are highly limiting; and when devs screw up optimizing their games on console, you're screwed. You don't have the option of powering through it.

Binarycode290d ago

That's why always wait and see what the game plays like on any device before you buy.

I think they've done a good job porting it to pc, but it needs to be able to run on lower end cards and should have a ram indicator to show how much video ram is being used.

ChasterMies290d ago

That’s why I play on PS5. The user base is so big, devs can’t afford to screw up optimizing their games for it.

MrVux000289d ago

Looking at the overall state of PC gaming and its ports of AAA games for the past 3-4 years vs consoles ports.

Not really helping your case.

1nsomniac290d ago

People never listened when I said that this game doesn’t use “real” ray tracing on PS5. I believe it uses a very clever advanced/modified screen space reflection system. Which is why the real ray tracing doesn’t work on pc.

Outside_ofthe_Box290d ago

Does it matter? I thought we were past this "real" nonsense. The end results matter more. If you can't distinguish, who cares. If it allows for better/more stable frame rate who cares. MS f'd everything when they started using terms like "true" and "real" in their marketing when they launched the One X last gen. People are finally starting to realize that "True 4K" doesn't matter if you have to sacrifice framerate to achieve it. In the end something always has to give if you are truly pushing the hardware.

Binarycode290d ago

Raytracing reflections are used on PS5 as they are in Spiderman, Same engine. tested by professionals with first hand knowledge.

PC Ray-tracings problems are bugs and on AMD side a driver issue.

Lastly if AMD want to compete in the RT space, they need to come up with a solution. As in a unique chip to do it, not just make the gpu with some driver things help it. It's miles behind Nvidia.
