The top 5 role-playing games of all time

MWEB GameZone writes: "The Role-Playing Game genre has seen countless wonderful games that have consumed players into their magnificent worlds for over 20 years.

RPG’s promote character infusion and self-expression on a deeply personal level, which leads to an immersive gaming experience unlike what we find in other genres.

Here are five exceptional RPG's which directed the player to extended him or herself along emotional, visual and intellectual pathways that are mostly absent in other genres."

HanCilliers3496d ago

The Mass Effect series will always be my number one.

Sillicur3496d ago

Yeh, the ME series of games are awesome. Sadly number 3 dissapointed a lot of people, but I actually liked the ending :)

zeee3496d ago

My number one would be Fallout series. Especially, fallout 3.

bouzebbal3496d ago

i am a JRPG player. this list means nothing to me.
Are all these games better than a Dragon Quest or FF? pleaaaase get serious!

UltraNova3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

Demon's Souls, Morrowind, Fallout 3, FF7, Dragon Quest and the original Deus ex make up my top 6 list (Ok I cheated but I cant decide which one to remove from the list).

frostypants3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

Loved ME. Loved ME2. Got bored with ME3 after a few hours and never went back.

NukaCola3495d ago

Chrono Trigger
Kingdom Hearts
Fallout 3
Star Wars: KOTOR
Pokemon Crystal

I'm sorry, but how is there not even one JRPG on this list? Not even one?

Sillicur3496d ago

Honestly these are just better :) I think FFVI would have been number 6 for me if this was a top 10 :)

TheFirstClassic3495d ago

Eh, it all goes to personal opinion I guess. I haven't played one wrpg that I think comes close to persona 3, persona 4, ff vii, and chrono trigger. The Witcher is probably the closest, although I haven't played the Witcher 2 again. Morrowind was good as well, but I think Skyrim is really overrated. Fun and all, but about as shallow as a kiddy pool.

MRMagoo1233496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

I think they wanted to make it fair, if they let jrpgs in the list they would have had no room for these one's they listed.

caseh3496d ago

There were a few in the honourable mentions.

frostypants3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

Because JRPGs aren't true RPGs. They're fun and entertaining, but they're kind of their own genre. Look at a game like Suikoden. Really hard to call that an RPG.

Spotie3495d ago

So you point at one jrpg and say that's reason enough?

Sorry, but in an rpg, you play characters with a specific role. Hence rpg.

Jrpgs deserve spots on the list. Odds are they deserve too many, so they omitted them altogether.

Good list, mass effect is just a classic. A little sad to not see the witcher in here, but its a top 5.... pretty tight!

As for jrpg, generally weaker than RPGs, lately anyway if directly compared to mass effect. But chrono trigger, ff6, ff7, ff9, star ocean 1 all could hold their own easily. Seiken densetsu 3 too! But jrpg and RPG are almost entirely different genres now, can't compare

Sillicur3496d ago

Well said sir. It was tough leaving out The Witcher and Baldurs Gate II, really really tough ! Thank you :)

Completely agreed about the JRPGs

DeusEx-Machina3496d ago

I understand it was necessary to balance the Infinity Engine games a little. Else the list might have been:

1. Planscape Torment
2. Baldur's Gate II (incl. Throne of Bhaal)
3. Baldur's Gate I (inlc. Tales of the Swordcoast)
4. Ice Wind Dale I
5. Ice Wind Dale II

Well at least mine. Lol

That being said, can't wait for Pilars of Eternity and Torment: Tides of Numenera!

MRMagoo1233496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

Some of these aren't modern tho some are as old as most of the jrpgs, there is not one game on this list better than star ocean final fantasy 7,8 or 9 or chrono trigger imo. I would even pick final fantasy 10 and 10 part 2 over most.

Edit also forgot legend of dragoon that game kicks any of the lists arse imo.

CongoKyle3496d ago

Dragon Age: Origins deserved an honourable mention :D

Sillicur3496d ago

If i could, there would be around 20 more RPGs on the honourable mention list! Except for Dungeon Siege haha

DeusEx-Machina3496d ago (Edited 3496d ago )

I was about to post, that if this list doesn't feature Planescape: Torment, it would be an automated fail. Fortunately I don't have to ;)

Formerly being a fanatic Mass Effect fan with ME1, I now look down on the series with disgust, when thinking of what they have turned it into first with ME2 and finally with ME3.

If this list would also feature jrpgs, my top choice would be either Xenogears or Xenoblade closly followed by FFVI.

Paprika3496d ago

Mass effect, till that bloody awful ending, was great. But mass effect 1 is the stand out. Call me sad, but I gave mass effect a standing ovation literally clapping saying wow Wtf that was insane! Epic song at the end as the camera slowly moved away from shephard... that's one of the best moments in gaming!

Some Great Deals For Games On The Xbox 360

IM PLAYIN highlights some of the great games that you can currently get on the Xbox 360, including some that are multiplatform, for relatively cheap.

"State of Decay is crazy cheap on the Xbox Live Marketplace, considering how many hours you can squeeze out of it. It’s one of those games that you can play religiously for hours, or flit in and out of when you’re looking for a bit of filler. As far as zombie survival games go, this is one of the greats. It’s also one of the first to do it, especially on such a grand scale. Search for supplies, clear out the zombie hordes and grow both your community of survivors and your base of operations – all whist exploring a pretty decent sized game world ranging from country fields to packed towns."

Gotta love XBL! I bought so many good games for insanely low prices in the past year. It's a great way to end a lifecycle in my opinion.
