What does it take to run The Witcher 3 at 1080p60?

A massive critical and sales success, The Witcher 3 is a phenomenal piece of engineering - a technological accomplishment clearly built with the limitations of current-gen console in mind, but scaling beautifully on all manner of PC hardware. In producing our recent Face-Off, we saw that a relatively modest budget PC could match and in some cases exceed both PS4 and Xbox One performance at the same visual quality, but we wanted to go further - pushing those quality presets across a range of PC hardware.

$200 gtx 960 gets it done with 60fps and 1080p. Not bad as an upgrade for someone already with a pc.

Especially if there coming from a gtx 560 from 4-5 years ago.

However the i5-2500k probably doesn't need an upgrade they bought back then.

KeplerNoMore3279d ago

While the 960 is a great 1080p/60fps card, its only limited to the BUS, even on the 4gb vram edition, it wont go very far in visuals, but other than that, its great on Nvidia cards.

cayleee3279d ago (Edited 3279d ago )

Well you need top disable some of the intensive settings like HBAO, Hairworks and maybe grass draw distance (down to high instead of ultra).

Few of those adjustments should enable a GTX 960 to run the game in 1080p 60fps and still above console graphics settings.

Edit so a GTX 750 ti 140usd GPU can outperform the PS4 cool. GTX 960 then should have no problem doing 60fps.

Petro3279d ago

To me it looks like GTX 960 didn't get it done, it didn't do 60fps (it did 47.3) average at 1080p on high setting. Tho if you are satisfied playing on "just" high setting then GTX 970 gets it done.

Max graphics 1440p it takes Titan X to run the game 60fps average. Unfortunately I cannot afford TItan X on my upcoming computer build because all the metalwork I'm doing for it, so I have to go with EVGA GTX 980 Hybrid, it's the closest thing you can get to TItan X.

n1kki63279d ago

My gtx 970 sli will do 4k at 60 at medium which I prefer over max 1080. https://youtube.com/watch?v...

ninsigma3279d ago

Dual 970 will get it done, actually over 60 fps at 1440p if you turn off anti aliasing which isn't that important at that res. I average 70 fps with that and peak into the 80s. I have aa turned on now as well as the nvidia hair works and everthing else on full and I play in the 50s. Definitely don't need a titan x

LightofDarkness3279d ago

Agreed with above, I have SLI 970s and I've got everything on @ 1080p 60FPS, including AA and Hairworks. Smooth as butter. I initially had disappointing performance in the mid 40s, but it seemed to be a bug relating to playing in a borderless window in SLI mode. Switching to fullscreen resolved it all.

Petro3279d ago

Forgot to mention that I'm not going for SLI/Crossfire until Oculus Rift SLI/Crossfire stuttering is fixed.

I am just running a GTX 680 and an AMD 8350 - albeit not at 60FPS but still getting 40FPS on average on 1080p and ultra settings (No nVidia HairWorks though) but every thing else is on Ultra. My wife is running an AMD 1100T Black Edition with (2) GTX 470's in SLI and getting great performance as well on Ultra w/ No HairWorks. For such a technically demanding game with amazing graphics it was definitely optimized VERY well for a broad range of setups :D

clouds53279d ago

I play with a gtx970 and an old phenom 2 x4 @3.9ghz, 8 GB RAM and i get about 50 fps in the country and 40 in the city with all settings at max(ultra) including hairworks @1080p.
very good optimization imho. I could reduce some settings to reach almost constant 60fps but 40-50 fps is fine for me in this kind of game. I prefer having full visual quality over those fps, fuck me right.

scorpian0073279d ago (Edited 3279d ago )

at 1080p, I was getting a pretty stable 50-60fps on High/Ultra settings (no Hairworks) on my i7 4770K, 3GB HD7970 and get a stable 30fps (locked) at 1440p. Not bad for a 3.5 year old GPU

GTX980 will do just turn off G/H work.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave44d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan44d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name68d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno68d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno68d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure67d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
