Man, these are beautiful pics. Can't wait to see what people do with this engine.

Palitera3258d ago (Edited 3258d ago )

If someone someday starts using it for good games.

bouzebbal3258d ago

i have no idea why people keep hyping this engine. last gen it was a very average engine far from being the best in its class. UE and Cryengine are 2 of the most overrated engines ever.

FastRedPonyCar3258d ago

You can download the public alpha of the new unreal tournament right now. It's amazing looking, plays/feels really great and totally free forever.

Gazondaily3258d ago

UE engine was brilliant last gen-the fact that so many people utilised it is a testament to that. The Gears series made amazing use of it.

I don't think it was average; its just that so many people utilised it that it might have become a bit same-y.

Also, Cryengine yielded some amazing results on consoles.

Shadowstar3258d ago (Edited 3258d ago )

@abzdiine : I think it's because there aren't that many commercial engines out there that push themselves as engines rather than games. Being a commercial engine rather than a game means that they can-- really, that they have to-- spend resources showing how pretty the engine can be with no resources dedicated to gameplay. (And by this, I note that above and beyond Unreal's own demos, Koola has an Unreal grant to make his architectural visualizations.)

Edit: Also, Unreal 3 really only sucked ass on most PS3/Wii games. It looked fine on 360 and PC.

It's unreal4 with DX12. The API has to be able to fully access the full capability of the CPU's and GPU's for this to be possible. To achieve this level of lighting requires heavy draw calls to the GPU. Think about what usually slows games down: Big explosions and brightly colored large objects.

OneAboveAll3258d ago

But... but... Unreal Engine can only produce brown and grey colors!

/s

This should shut the naysayers up.

Utalkin2me3258d ago

This is not game a situation. These shots was strictly designed for beauty aspects only. It's not even a tech demo it is just screens.

Don't know what you're referring to about unreal engine and browns and greys. Mirrors edge was a beautiful game and ran on the Unreal engine.

Gotcha53258d ago

Can't wait to see Gears 4 & Joe Montana 16 running on Unreal Engine 4 at this coming E3.

gangsta_red3258d ago

But will we ever see these types of graphics in a game for any console or average PC?

gangsta_red3258d ago

We have been reading and seeing articles like these for what it seems like forever. I still haven't played a photo-realistic game.

Just wondering when is this actually going to happen.

Timesplitter143258d ago

I'd say like 4-5 years from now

The 10th Rider3258d ago (Edited 3258d ago )

@Timesplitter14,

Look at the progress we've made since Crysis came out 8 years ago. There's been some, of course. But we're really not that much further ahead. Heck, consoles nowadays can barely run demanding games at 1080p 60fps.

We're at least 10 years off from seeing games that look like this (remember that's only 2 console generations.) We might see one or two before then, but more likely something like PT rather than a big AAA game like Metal Gear Solid, Assassin's Creed, or Battlefield.

Roccetarius3258d ago

Give it a few more years once HBM is out the door, then PC with DX12 / Vulkan will make it very possible. The other machines will probably take double or more years than the PC.

AlphaBlackWolf963258d ago

Possibly in the not-so distant future my friend.

Davi1233257d ago

You should have played the Silent Hills demo, just for feel more optimistic.

gangsta_red3257d ago

I did, it was good. But the pics here shown are on another level it looks like.

The most versatile engine last gen some amazing games came from unreal looking forward to it.

Rookie_Monster3258d ago

I sort of wondering is EPIC still making AAA games? They sold off the Gears IP but they haven't release anything for ages. I am hopi g they'll release a new IP for this gen.

Timesplitter143258d ago

well there's the new UT which is playable right now if you download UE4. It's pretty good

Skate-AK3258d ago

Fortnight and UT is all I know of.

wannabe gamer3258d ago

i thought Microsoft owned Gears

Someone else was commissioned to do the music and another person modelled the batmobile. Links to all involved are included in the article.

Am I crazy or is there an Unreal Engine 5 now? Why promote old tech?

waverider1109d ago

I really dont understand either? isnt the Unreal Engine 5 already available for studios? arent they already working with it?

masterfox1108d ago

UE5 Is for PS5 only, deal with it! :D

***runs away from this thread with pride!**

Tacoboto1108d ago

UE5 is not released yet and developers for years will still make UE4 games because that's where their tools and customizations are.

Mortal Kombat still uses UE3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is also still UE3.

Magog1108d ago

That more of an embarrassing indictment of those devs than a reason to promote old software.

Tacoboto1108d ago

Embarrassing indictment? You know nothing of software development then.

Spenok1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

Because a ridiculous amount of the industry still uses 4, and because no, 5 is not out yet. They said it would launch later this year.

AuraAbjure1108d ago

Companies still use Unreal Engine 3.

Really impressive tech but I don’t even notice all of these benefits in real life, never mind being chased by zombies in a video game. Rather devote resources to resolution and frame rate.

Magog1108d ago

If you suddenly stopped casting reflections in a mirror I think you would notice.

Amplitude1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

Edit: i misread this.

Einhander19711107d ago

Yes after seeing the Unreal 5 ps5 reveal, I thought that's where we were heading. But saying that I have read various articles that suggest its easy for developers to still work on Unreal 4 and carry everything over to Unreal 5 when needed, we shall see.
